The Prodigal Son, as told by Guy Ritchie
#GuyRitchie #ProdigalSon #JoeRoganExperience #GuyRichie #JoeRogan
As told by master storyteller Guy Ritchie on the Joe Rogan Experience
"The Prodigal Son.
Parable, Christian, seems religious... doesn't really make much sense. So there's a father, he has two sons, an older son and a younger son. And he says to them, "Who wants to spend their inheritance?" The younger son says, "Me, Dad; I'll go and spend it." And the younger son takes all the dough and he runs off and sniffs coke off strippers' tits for a number of years until he realizes, "this is getting pretty boring, and I'm in a lot of trouble." He ends up feeding, throwing food to pigs, that's his job. And he can't even eat the food that he gives to the pigs, at which point he says, "Dad, will you take me back?"
Dad then goes to... they don't meet, this somehow happens, not through telephones, it just happens. At which point Dad goes to the fatty calf and says, "Kill the fatty calf." The older son says, "Hold on, Dad, what's going on? I've stayed with you since the beginning. I've been loyal to you, and I hear the stories of my younger brother coming back who's been sniffing coke off strippers' tits for the last I don't know how many years, and you're prepared to kill the fatty calf. What's the SP, Dad? I want to know the story." He says, "you're alright son, don't worry about that. You take a little step to the side, you've always been with me, you're a good boy."
Dad goes out to meet the prodigal son, the wasteful son. The wasteful son returns, and he says, "you were lost, and now you're found." That's the end of the story. It's quite hard to make sense of that, in a literal sense. You go, "oh, Dad was a bit unfair; he should've have been kind to the oldest son because he never ran off and did anything." But the essence of the story is that you are the father. You are enough. Your older son is your intellect. He says, "oh don't do this, don't do that." He's trying to reconcile, make sense of a prosaic and material world.
The younger son, being the wild, feral entity that he is, wants to go out in the world and find out what it's all about. So in his recklessness and sense of adventure, he finds that he can't escape himself. So he has to return to himself, and at which point he has to accept who he is. At which point the intellect has left out the equation, pretty much, as the older brother, because he can't understand the significance of the journey of the wasteful brother.
In the end, you have to leave yourself to understand the value of yourself. You have to lose stuff before you realise that all the stuff that you're losing is ephemeral and transitory. It's not yours. You're enough, you're always enough, but you've got to somehow prostitute yourself before you realise your own value.
That is the essence of all stories."

Tulsa's New Pedestrian Bridge - Williams Crossing

Last Friday night - Aug. 30th, '24 - standing along the path just a few feet above the Arkansas River and just under the pedestrian bridge stretching above, observing kids splashing in delight over the new water feature, I reminisced over the view from the same spot some 30-40 years ago. Tulsa has transformed its riverfront with the creation of Zink Lake, the construction of a new pedestrian bridge called Williams Crossing, and the development of the Tulsa Wave Park. That backing-track immediately makes me smile. Some daring drone-flying going on there I must say, speaking from a position of complete ignorance you understand. I'm glad you watched, enjoyed, and are also a sucker for infrastructure like you are cars. They go hand in hand, after all! About two-thirds in to the video, I paused over my childhood home long enough to show just how close all of this is to it -- long before much of this was a possibility. It's been fun to watch.

      That's great you watched this, Dave. I add a detailed description for each. Here's this one's: "This is Southampton, New York's Road D Beach - 100 miles east of Manhattan and one of my favorite places on Earth - on April 16th, 2024. The music is from the soundtrack from the 1997 film, The Saint. I saw Southampton's Beach the first time in the spring of 2005 when my boss - and brilliant adman who taught me so much - Orson Munn III, showed it to me on a "beach drive." A generations-long Southampton resident, this place is deeply special to him and his family, and upon seeing it I immediately understood why. Orson had graciously invited me out to his family's weekend home so he could give me pointers on his vintage BMW motorcycle, helping me prepare for my week-long tour of Arizona on Harleys with my best friend going back to 8th grade - Jim Webster (the video Jim made about that trip is here: • Arizona Harley-Davidson roadtrip ) Orson might've taken me out in his Mustang and let that glorious V8 stretch its legs a bit, too. ;) Over the last 10-15 years, Southampton's Road D Beach has become a must-stop on my annual "Day of Brent" trip out to the Hamptons. Standing on that beach and taking in the sea breeze feels like all the world's problems don't much matter, the way the rich air seems to nurture my lungs when I breathe it in, flowing in from the seemingly-boundless Atlantic Ocean. In recent trips to the Hamptons friend, photographer, and film director Owen Elliott has joined me. He shares my astonishment with the place. It's been fun showing him around and seeing his eyes light up the way mine always do when heading "Out East." Anyway, this short drone clip I captured should give you a taste of this special place that has long felt like home to me.. far, far, far away from home."

    Great video, and great points made! I was excited when Tulsa King shot here, thinking that it might help to get the message out that Tulsa is a real city with all the real city amenities. Imagine my disappointment when they show a random horse running around downtown and everyone acts like it's normal, he is offered a spangled cowboy suit as "a real Tulsa suit" and it is indicated that the Mayo is the only nice hotel in town. Still...it's nice to see recognizable Tulsa landmarks identified as such. Maybe it will grow from here.

    • @brentdcampbell
      @brentdcampbell ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Erin - That's cool you saw this. I may have one more edit to make before it's ready for prime time, yet I am quite determined to help get the word out about wonderful city. I plan to subscribe to Paramount+ starting next month mostly so I can see "Tulsa King." Though I'm curious about the "Yellowstone" spinoffs, too. Sadly, TV shows and movies are rarely created to show off the place where they're shot; rather, the location is there to serve as a backdrop for the story. Do you think how I put it in the video is fair, though? People will be fascinated by Tulsa, but they still won't understand why the place is so special. My hunch is that - like I did with Montana when I started watching "Yellowstone" - people will see the shows and movies and be intrigued to look deeper to understand the place...and hopefully want to come visit and more.

    • @TulsaTaurus
      @TulsaTaurus ปีที่แล้ว

      @brentdcampbell yes, I thought you put it well. The things I've seen- especially TK- unabashedly show Tulsa landmarks as what they are. Not trying to pass for another place. I think you're right, that it might spark an interest, get the name in people's mind so that when they see something else they'll stop to consider it. I wish Tulsa could become a bastion to the arts like Austin or Savanah or Santa Fe. We need an established Arts school like SCAD or some of the others I can't think of now.
