Thank you so much for this, Barbara. I've had a piece of silkemat all rigidized sitting on my table and have been hesitant to try it. Now I'll give it a go. Thanks again!
Thank you for the video. I’ve ordered everything to try this. Two questions, you say use 6 pieces of glass. How thick 2mm or 6mm. Also it looks like you made your holes prior to making it ridged but the directions say to heat and set first.
@@margestrother7269 I used 6 pieces of 3mm glass. The SilkeMat was prefired. You can make this holes before or after rigidizing (dried). Just run a finger wet with rigidizer around the inside of the hole to seal any loose fibers. Make sense?
Thank you for showing this with many details, but there is a thing I couldn't understand. How do you use the piece on which you put the rigidizer? On the video, at 6:00 you showed this piece but I don't understand. How to use it in the given construction? Thank you for answering!
Silkemat texture got reflected in glass. How do I remove the residue of silkemat from glass? I so far soaked in the vinegar and used the green scrubbie. And of course it is hard to access the area between the "legs"... Please help!
Anna, I'm not sure what happened. What was your top temperature? Did you rigidize the mold? If so, did you sand? Or is this raw SilkeMat? A stiff wire brush usually handles any residue.
Sorry one more question. I watched your video again. Thank you for doing it. I’m ready to pre-fire my Matt today but now worried because I only ridgidized the circle where my glass will sit. Should I have done the whole matte? I see where you did one with just the circle so glass could run over the edges. If I leave it, should I cut the 8” square down a little. I hope this message make sense. Thanks again
Wherever the SilkeMat is soft, the glass will drop down with weight and gravity. Won't hurt a thing. BTW, I am having a SilkeMat flash sale on my bjcashman website, if you're interested.
Just ordered but something went wrong. I only wanted the $60.00 +$10.00 but my PayPal came back $175.00. Was there something else in my cart I wasn’t aware of? Can you fix it? Thank you
I see the problem. Last month I was going to order the products from your site but I ended up at Delphi because the could send the 4inch posts. I forgot to cancel the cart. I don’t need anything other than the flash sale Matte. Thanks
@@barbaracashman Did you get my message re: the mistake on my order? I only want the 2 with one free, $60.00 plus the $10.00 flat postage. The remainder was items in my cart I no longer wanted. Thank you. Marge Steother
If you think they will be in the way, coat with kiln wash. Since I keep my SilkeMat in a square, I have corners to support the kiln posts and keep them out of the way.
Thank you, I just got everything and applied the solution to the silkeMat last night. I’m letting it dri before pre heating in the kiln. It’s drying light in color. Is that correct?
If the feet are splayed so that you cannot get them back out of the mold, you have to sacrifice the mold. If you can get the feet out, you can use many times.
Good morning, I am trying the Jellfish piece and just wondered what the firing schedule is for Fire polishing the piece after a little coldworking? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Diane
Diane, I apologize. I just saw your question. Fire polishing might be difficult. But if the form is not destroyed, you could replace in the kiln, slowly fire to temp and SLOWLY re-anneal.
That was what I did for this video so it was controlled. Any variance will change the schedule. Also, my kiln elements were very close to the project and the kiln only a 14x14, so it also contained the heat and heated up faster. You just have to watch it and adjust temp and time accordingly. Make sense?
When I first watched this, I thought you meant 6mm of glass, but upon watching again, I realized you said six LAYERS. Which begs the question: How thick are your individual layers? 3mm? Times six means 18mm total thickness?
Hi Barbara - great video - thank you. In one of your previous videos you mentioned 96 glass sticks to silk mat. I only use 96 - should I not use silkmat. Thank you
Hi Margaret. What I actually said was that softer glasses like 90 and 96 CAN stick to SilkeMat at high temperatures (full fuse and higher). I have not had anything stick at slumping temperatures. The softer glasses expand and contract and can grab fibers. I usually sand anything that been rigidized and spray with ZYP when I am full fusing. I hope that clarifies that. Thank you for asking. Let me know if I can be of further help.
@@barbaracashman Thanks for getting back to me Barbara. I was thinking of using Silkmat to do the drip project where you cut holes in the silk mat and lay it over kiln posts you talked about the other day with 96. How do you think it would work out?

You would cut the holes the same way. I might also rigidize both sides for strength, still leaving the edge raw on both. Is that what you were asking?

Sorry another question. Did you treat the 4” kiln stands? If not, won’t the glass stick to them as it drips down?

When you added the powder for the blue tint did you just add it between layers of glass like you do for bubbles?
Yes.
Thank you,
I just got everything and applied the solution to the silkeMat last night. I’m letting it dri before pre heating in the kiln. It’s drying light in color. Is that correct?
Yes, it is grayish in color when dried. It turns brown and becomes much harder when cured at fusing temps.

Thank you! What should the temp be for Bullseye?
The same schedule should work ok with the exception of the annealing temp. Follow BE's recommendations on that.
This is beautiful. So it takes 6 3mm pieces prefused together?
That was what I did for this video so it was controlled. Any variance will change the schedule. Oh, and they were not pre-fused. It was a one-step process.
Que espesor tiene la manta sobre la que se perforan los círculos?
6mm

yes, 3mm was what I used. It was about 3/4" high.
Can I reuse the mold if I cut small cuts to remove it?
If you can free it from the glass you can use again. It all depends on how splayed the feet are to get back through the holes. Good luck!
How did you make your Rigidizer?
It is my own formula. SilkeMat Rigidizer is available from my distributors and on my website bjcashman.com.

@@barbaracashman sorry Barbara. How would you prevent sticking
@@barbaracashman sorry Barb. So are you saying 96 would not stick to silkmat in the drip project?
Is the mold a one-use item or can it be used multiple times?
If the "feet" spread out or connect at the base, you will have to cut the mold away. If not, you can lift the glass out and use again, several times.
do u sell these products
