It's a crying shame that country radio has forgotten what genuine country music ought to sound like. These were the days when you were able to distinguish who was singing on radio. Thanks for sharing!!
Ray has and always will be the master of the understated country soulful sound. Younger folks would do well to closely listen to his delivery of songs just like this gem. He lightly caresses the lyrics and always respects the writer's intent. A class act all the way. It's his sound we heard as when younger we contemplated the lonely half-full glass and when older reflected back to instant-recall memories. May God Bless the old Cherokee Cowboy and ride with him down the last trail home.
Buddy Emmons was playing stuff back then that steel players aren't even playing now. The best pedal steel guitarist there will ever be, and a sound to die for.
This song and "Unloved,Unwanted " were the first songs I learned to play guitar with in 1969. Classics and great talent with Ray a legend. Thanks for posting
Ray Price had the best voice in all genres of music. He will live on forever through his music. I miss him every day and will always love him. RIP Ray !
'Today's "country music" will quickly become tomorrow's history...we old 'boomers just don't buy any music from these artificial Nashville screamers.... they have not lived long enough to sing any of Ray's songs with passion or emotion... from a 66 year old central Texas fan who has danced to Ray's music since junior high school
Hey dodiho65, I think the same thing, then every once in awhile someone like Mo Pitney renews my faith. Take a listen to Mo's cover of 'Don't You Ever Get Tired of Hurting Me' th-cam.com/video/R82jLVBy5IY/w-d-xo.html
+Mary Winkle Never did make another like Ray,he was the best,More tried sounding like Ray than any other artist, some came close none ever quite got his sound exact
I love this guy,the frist song l ever heard was For the Goodtimes♥️l was maybe12,my mom was listening to this song and crying, her and my dad were having trouble.l loved the song and still listen to him today, old country, the Best...
I just wanted to say that this was the favorite song of University of Texas Coach Darrell Royal.. he loved this song...thought maybe the UT folks would like to know..
I HOPE I CAN SEE THIS WONDERFUL LEGEND. IN MT. PLEASANT, TX (KLTV) - The Northeast Texas Community College Foundation is pleased to announce that it will host country music legend Ray Price in concert at the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, April 2.,. 2011
I started a fb page to try a bring back real country music such as the kind Mr.Price brought to us. Please go to save real country music on fb and like the page to we can keep music like this on the radio
My thoughts exactly! He could sure teach those "new" so called country singers a thing or two(or 100!)They need to listen to him& find out what real country music really sounds like.
@tlundb While that is true, the kids today do have talent & you gotta give 'em their due. Like Amanda Lambert's The House That Built Me. Tell me you didn't at least choke up when you first heard that one?! I dang near outright cried. Still do, when I think of not only my dogs, but also my horse buried under our tree. My dad hired a backhoe to dig that grave. Man what memories! She hit it out of the park with that one. There's been others but that one sticks out like a stake in the heart.
Voices like Ray's and other pure country talents like Gene Watson, Merle and George are what sold records for many years. They didn't need the high tech glitzy videos that seem to push many of today's singers into the limelight. If I had a choice of listening to Ray's still terrific voice on a record, at age 85, or that of one of today's new finds I think Ray's would win hands down. Thanks again for posting this treasure. - Paula
This is from a 1981 POP Goes The Country show and Ray told Tom T. Hall he was hoarse that day. That's why Ray is grinning after he goes for the high note at 1:16 and 2:55. He was hoarse and still sounded awesome.
2packs4sure i saw him a few months before he died. He sat down most of the show but he was killing it and he lost his voice pretty early on. He apologized and said he was going to try real hard to finish the rest of the show and he absolutely killed it. He was as good as they get. I was lucky enough to see him twice
Had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Price mid 60s Knoxville TN. one of the best live performers ever, sounds as good as on record. The master mr. Noble Ray Price
My favorite of all times....I do his material in some of the bands I sing in...I can feel a Texas Spring and a Texas Autumn in almost everything he sings along with Bob Wills and Hank Williams.....I love ya Ray
So many of the great country singers are gone. Very few of today's country singers will be remembered like the old timers are remembered. My old band still plays lots of Ray's music.
ONE OF THE VERY BEST SINGERS, ENTERTAINERS & A GENTLEMAN. HIS LAST ALBUM WAS FANTASTIC...CALLED ...BELIEVE. HE WAS VERY HAPPY WITH THE FINISHED PRODUCT & FELT IT WAS HIS BEST EVER. EVEN THOUGH HE WAS SO SICK...HE SOUNDED SO GOOD & I LISTEN TO IT OFTEN. LOVED RAY.
I met him a long time ago, I was the deck hand on the Marlyn M. fishing boat out of Freeport Texas and he was on the boat that day. Interesting fellow as well as my favorite CW singer.
Today's country music is not country music. You cannot replace these great artists. The passion in the songs are what make the singer live on forever.
Amen

Yes, it does still listening in 2024. This is my joy. .❤😊

No one can beat Buddy Emmons...I can't believe this vibrato and the long sensual near erotic phrasing on steel guitar...my God !!!
Oh man. He's got that "falling down in slow motion" sound, I love Buddy.
country music just isn't country without the steele. It can make you sad or happy.
Grew up listening to this. My Dad introduced me to country music. Thankful for that. :)
