    I remember watching "No Holds Barred" at a theater. Great film. Didn't know Vince produced it. I thought it was a Hollywood thing.

      @@J-S.P Yeah I've heard, but going after Letterman would be a bigger risk than going after Costas, if he made a fool of himself on Letterman the whole world would have known about it, Costas just stays in the us. Less risk to go after him.

      He was nervous that Letterman was going to ask him if its fake. Lawler and Kaufman had a feud and promoted it on Lettermans showin a few years earlier. Letterman later found out that it wasn't a legit feud and had anything wrestling related banned on his show after that.

    I remember a few years before this, Letterman did a segment on his show where he interviewed Vince McMahon who was in a location outside the studio, and Letterman treated McMahon poorly and made jokes at his expense. I think this was McMahon's revenge for that.

      Its weird. They’d do it on TV that wasn’t the Superstars/Challenge/Primetime shows and just sort of ignore it.
      I think there was the MSG show in 1986 or so where they outright give Vince a plaque for being a great promoter and partner to MSG.

    This was back when they did not openly admit to it being scripted.
    So it was normal to shy away from questions about who is responsible for the good guy/bad guy...the big town/small town,
    What will happen at the next one..do we know..etc.
    Nothing amiss here.

    I will always appreciate the kayfabe days. So much mystery surrounded pro wrestling for decades, even if it was often tongue-in-cheek. Like many, pulling the curtain made the genre even more popular because people began to appreciate it as a known performance art rather than some scheister carnies trying to pull one over on you. But there was a special magic not knowing for sure if it was real or not. Kayfabe still exists on some level, but it really did become the difference between being 7 years old and visiting Santa, to being 12 years old and visiting an old man dressed as Santa.

    McMahon was buff even in the seventies through mid-eighties... when you check out his spot interviews with wrestlers, you can see it. There were some tricks used to make certain wrestlers to look more imposing. Now, he may have gotten a certain "boost" by this point, no doubt....

    This was a funny interview. Letterman and McMahon's personalities mesh well together. Short interview but sometimes they're better that way. I love that Letterman knew Bobby Heenan.

    Hate was kind of strong... I think Dave was nervous because he doesn't follow wrestling and knows even less about McMahon and Vince could clearly see that. This was also at a time where the press and media were not very receptive to wrestling despite the draw that it had become.

    You have it backwards. Letterman HATES Vince. Likely due to stories he heard about Vince from wrestlers who he was personal friends with. Vince was only on the show because of his connections with NBC executives like Dick Ebersol, the co-creator of Saturday Night's Main Event. I guess it's easy to forget that Letterman used to work for NBC.

    When I was a kid in the 80s, Vince McMahon looked like an average sized man to me, but seeing him now as an adult, it's pretty obvious that under that suit & tie he was pretty buff dude.

    Obviously McMahon was only there to promote No Holds Barred, but he knew Letterman was going to needle him about "Big Time Wrestling" (as Dave has refers to those shows) before mentioning the movie. Lettermen got his shots in, McMahon gave very brief answers as he didn't want to get into a roast contest with Dave, and got to promote the movie in the end. Never saw the film, but according to Rotten Tomatoes, both critics and moviegoers thought it was bad.

    I don't like Vince, but wow does Dave know how to make an ass of himself. It's like he's never had a guest before. Nervous, rude, talks over the other person, asks more than one question at a time, doesn't allow from a response, expects a serious answer while not being seriously interested.       @chrishagins3309 Letterman is also a comedian. His natural instinct if the interview sucks is to resort to comedy. I have done interviews as well on Radio. None major, but sometimes it's like pulling teeth with a guest. That is also why the interview is so short too.

    We have to remember that this was when Kayfabe was still a thing. There were only certain ways Vince could answer some of those questions without giving away too much info to the general public.
