Hey JusteZ! The Bait barge is located on N Pacific St, Oceanside. Just go to the Harbor Pelican Deli & Mart . There will be a guy outside sitting down waiting for people to ask him for live chovies! Good luck -Rod
Hey Carson, I bought my at the Oceanside Harbor bait barge. you dont need a boat to get there, although you do need a 10 gallon bucket. This time of the year you can get anchovies on the pier, using sabiki jig Hope this helps PM if you have any more questions -Rod
Hey there Rodney, so I went to Carlsbad Lagoon and spotted a halibut by the looks of it maybe 35 inches. Really nice looking, but I tried live bait, and white ice zoom baits but couldn't nab it. Any tips? Also any tips on how to fight the strong current would help.
Thats a nice size halibut! Yeah sometimes the halibut or any kind of fish wont bite. With the stronger current I like to use a 2 oz drop shot weight . Of course, using a heavy action rod will help
Hey Rodney..I met you on the rocks out at Harbor Island a few weeks ago..Had a beard and you gave me a few 3'swimbaits to try..anyway,is there any way you can tell me exactly where this spot is? how to get there? im wanting to hit it up tomorrow morning and would really appreciate it..
Rodney did you notice at all if the small, non-legal halibut were staying away from the live bait ( live sardines) more often than if you were to use the other rigs? In other words, was using live bait giving you a better shot at keepers than the drop shot fluke?
Nice job. Ever try bucktails or swimbaits? We slay halibut with those up here in the Bay Area. Don't have to worry about keeping bait alive that way either.
you make your own circle net, drop it down in the waters. Toss some wet bread over your net and let the bait fish swim in and pull up. Typically this method is used on the pier.
how do you keep bait close the bottom when fishing for halibut by those bridges? Each time i fish there, the tide just picks it up even if I use heavy weights. Can a thick line be an issue?
Yes the current is sooooo strong there because its the mouth of the lagoon. So usually i just recast everytime before it gets tangled on the bridge's posts. To be honest I like the way the current is strong because it carries more ground "naturally" good luck and have fun :)
Awesome vid man. Hopefully I'm transferring to UC San Diego for school next year. Any spots I should check out when I get there? Also, how far away is this from the campus?
Hey Jonathan, I got my live bait at the bait barge in Oceanside Harbor. There is a deli shop there and right next to it is a man selling live chovies. $10 a scoop of chovies. I bring my 10 gallon bucket with 2 battery operated air pumps to keep the chovies alive as long as possible because i have to make the drive to the fishing spot. Hope this helps -Rod
Nice job on those hali's! Have you every caught a legal hali on artificial lures? If so got any tips? I have only caught a few small halibuts on plastics (to stubborn to use live bait).
Great video. Subscribed! Can you tell me what type of rod ypu were using? I would also like to know the specs on the rod. It looks light and has a great bend.
Hey Jose, I was using a Shimano Clarus Specs : CSC-X66MA Length 6'6", power : Medium , lure weight 1/4-5/8 oz. ,action Extra fast, Im-7 graphite I love it :) thanks for subscribing and have fun fishing :)
Sweet video! How and where can I catch live bait? I haven't been catching any keeper fish and I've never caught a Halibut. I'm getting teased big time, but I won't give up. Help! I've been fishing here and there in SD. I want to catch some bragging fish! haha
Hey Jake! I fished this spot right before sunset into the night. Spectacular biting action. However this was in the spring time. So let me know if its good ! remember time the tides right good luck!
Jake Cannon can u tell me exactly which town and spot is it.It seems luke rodney doesn't like his fans hes not sharing exact location.ty i hope ur a better man.after all its God s land not Rodney. s land
Hey Wanett, Yes Carlsbad is a pretty good place to catch some halibut, specifically the mouth of the lagoon. Using live or freshly dead anchovies will often times get the elusive halibut to bite. I usually fish for the halibut when the tide is going from low tide to high tide and timing it so its early in the morning around 7 am. Hope this helps and happy fishing :) -Rodney
Hi there I just move to sd area and I like fishing . I am not sure which jetty you call san diego jetty? I like this spot and like to try how to catch my first halibut.thanks.
Hey Bomb! The bait barge charges $10 bucks for 2 scoops of live sardines. its a ten gallon bucket. Make sure to bring fish air pump to keep those sardines alive! I recommend transferring them to a bigger tank with two air pumps to keep them alive for 3 hours . Good Luck man! =]
Hey Cabo, I got them from oceanside harbor they have a bait barge where you can get live anchovies, you dont need a boat to get there you just need your own bucket
Not to hate but those "sardines" look like they are actually anchovies. Sardines are a little more greenish and are about 6-8 inches long. But nice vid.
Hey Ace Yes you can catch Halibut off the OB pier I would try my luck right where the wave breaks (in the shallows) and at the end of the pier on the right side of the T good Luck :)
san diego jetties as in san diego county looks like up north of san diego like Carlsbad Cardiff area. couldn't be in mission/mission or OB, either way good catch
Very nice. The San Diego area has the best fishing anywhere in CA, certainly much better than it is here on the coast of Ventura County, with local water temps seeming to never get above 58 degrees even in summer and piss poor fishing as a result.
Yes I love San Diego, Fishing here is amazing. I hope that some of my videos really urge people to travel down to San Diego and enjoy the excitement of fishing Thanks for watching and hope you subscribe -Rod
Hey Michael! Yes I have I caught 3 legal halibuts so far with artificial lures. All of them were caught a 4 inch hammerhead swimbait colored white. I recommend long casts fishing these lures close to the bottom along sandy channels. Fish for them low tide to high tide transition on a cloudy day. I use Tides4fishing. com to figure out the tidal times ! Hope this helps =] thanks for watching
Rodney Marquez ,,hey thanks,,I just wanted to make sure,,the reason its because I only eat fish with the two quality's,,meaning with scales and fins,,gracias hermano.
Hello, It is legal to fish in Carlsbad Lagoon in the area of the mouth. You need a valid California Fishing License in order to fish there. P.s It is free to fish on any piers happy fishing ! -Rod
hey finest! You can get the live bait from oceanside harbor, from a bait barge. You dont even need a boat to get there! I recommend a live bait tank to keep those sardines alive! Thanks for watching =]
Where did you buy the sardines? I can't find a place where I can buy them from shore and not the floating bait barge
Pacific coast bait and tackle sells frozen sardines work just as good
Hey JusteZ! The Bait barge is located on N Pacific St, Oceanside. Just go to the Harbor Pelican Deli & Mart . There will be a guy outside sitting down waiting for people to ask him for live chovies!

ive been looking for a sweet west coast fishing youtuber, you are the one.

Berkeley jerk shad works great for halis and bass
Thanks for taking your time to show how you catch halibut.

Yeah I believe live bait is always going to attract the keeper sized halibut to bite Vs (in theory) the younger less knowledgeable halibut
Awesome vid. Quick question bro do u leave the line with tension or do you just let the sardine swim where he wants..? Thanks
I go fishing on the Oregon coast (surf & jetty). I use clam necks and catch only flounders. Got any tips to catch different species and bigger fish?
Rodney... Is that South Ponto?
Nice job. Ever try bucktails or swimbaits? We slay halibut with those up here in the Bay Area. Don't have to worry about keeping bait alive that way either.
I use swim grubs and get them all of the time in San Diego. Caught three non keeper halibut in about 15mins once on a swim grub.
Nice vid, dude! I know you are using #10 test line... but what test is your leader line? Thanks! About to start some jetty and surf fishing...
Hey Jorge! I was using 10 lb test line :)
I recommend i recommend anywhere from 10 - 14 lb test line !
Happy fishing !
I know this videos hella old but do our think you can get the same result with white grubs and or frozen squid?
Ivan Roberts nice question , I I like white grind better then squid in this situation
So where at did you go to in the carlsbad lagoon? Because I live 5 miles away from it and I go there with no luck.
how do you get the live sardines? you catch them? if yes how

Is there a min size for recreational fishing? Bag limit sure, but size?
Hey Rodney, not sure if you're active on your TH-cam account but where or how do I catch those live grunions? Appreciate the info. Thanks
Hey Jonathan, I got my live bait at the bait barge in Oceanside Harbor. There is a deli shop there and right next to it is a man selling live chovies. $10 a scoop of chovies. Hey Rodney!
Fished this same spot a few times with pretty good luck, question: do halibut bite in the evening? i.e.: 6pm and later
Hey Jake! I fished this spot right before sunset into the night. Spectacular biting action. However this was in the spring time. So let me know if its good ! remember time the tides right

i like this spot for halis
location?
In Carlsbad by ponto beach

It would be nice if people didn't take this type of fish under size and let them grow like the ones in Alaska .
the record ca halibut was only 54 pounds
Nice.
If you kept it ? would have you been taken in by the fish police to fish jail ?
gotten a 200$ ticket and maybe ur fishing license taken away.
Ha! U dumb
That happens to me all the time...I just hope it never a stingray :)
Hey Victor!
