    the purpose of staining a canvas is not mandatory, its purpose is mainly to give a neutral colour to start the painting on; the eyes tend to be rather overwhelmed with all the white so the neutral colour allows the artist to judge value against a medium tone rather than the white!
    Again, it isnt necessary but does help, if nothing else, to fool the mind into feeling that the painting has started! I think we have all felt stupified staring at a blank canvas! lol

      The only thing I find with tinted backgrounds, the painting ends up darker... but I have more fun doing it... I don't like the darkness of final paintings, but it's a trade off for me. As I'm not really getting anywhere with my art mostly, I have to enjoy the process, or else what's the point of doing it.

    Hello, thx for vid and website etc. I have a question as to the tooth of your preferred canvas. From what I can tell thru vids your seem to be fairly smoothly primed, the foundation white providing tooth rather then a pronounced weave, is this correct...close too? :) I like the "red bole" like ground to work with as well and find the alkyd based 'foundation' white to be a good final layer before painting. As you stated the tooth etc. of a canvas is a bigger deal than I a had figured upon at 1st.

    WARNING! I used to stain my canvases like this, not anymore. What happened - after a while on most of those canvases oil color layer started to crack and peel off. That wasn't just one time event, it happened on most of the canvases I had stained like this. I'm not sure what went wrong. Anyway, now I stain my canvases with turpentine wash of a burnt umber or any other warm earth color and my paint layers stick to the canvas perfectly.

    I don't know what I did wrong but after getting the color I added a little mineral sprits and it immediately turned ten shades darker. In addition the oil and mineral spirits never really mixed fully, I had dark brown mineral spirits with a glob of oil paint in it. I mixed for about twenty minutes and also tried adding a little more mineral spirits before I gave up. It was about 45 degrees in the area I was working, could that have something to do with it? any suggestions would be appreciated

    Thank you Mark for your video tips! The Claessens # 13 canvas that you are using - is it the DP (double primed?) I have used the Claessens #12 DP and found it too thick for portraits, plus it has a very strong odor (not unpleasant, but I am sure unhealthy) compared to other oil primed canvases that don't smell at all..

    Can a foam brush be used with an oil ground coat? Or is the canvas at this stage too rough of a surface? What about a low-nap roller or foam roller?. I would worry that a roller might force paint down through the Gesso into the canvas -- and oil and canvas don't play nice together.

    I really appreciate your approach to painting because you mostly use nontoxic substances. When you stain a canvas, is it possible to use paint alone without the mineral spirits to obtain a stained background color? Is the main reason that you use the mineral spirits to thin the paint and to speed the drying time? I know that you might need to wait a little longer for paints to dry without the mineral spirits, but for some people, it might be worth it.

    thanks for the great video.
    I am a little unclear regarding staining and canvas and the concern of fat-over-lean.
    The way I understand it, at the bottom, we've the support (canvas., board ..etc.), then we've something like rabbit-skin glue followed by lets say an oil primer. It seems to me that the oil primer is pretty fat since it came soaked in linseed oil. Yes, we would thin it for application but I'd guess its fatter than what you (or I would have been) doing here.
    Another related question would be some artists like to have semi-transparent washes (eg of umber) to start their painting. Sort of a monochrome watercolour-like sketch, before they actually paint. Some of these washes may remain un-covered in the fished work (eg, in the shadow area). Again, would this be a violation of fat-over-lean?
    thanks in advance.

    • @daveshaw5328
      @daveshaw5328 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fat over lean has to do with wet layers and cracking during the drying process due to different drying times. The staining and preparing of the canvas, i.e. Gessoing or priming, is allowed to dry completely before the actual painting has begun.

    • @dawnb7972
      @dawnb7972 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ชาวส์ RPG I bet you have found the answer to your question by now. But, yes, the canvas must be primed...the last step in making the canvas.
      Think of the stain as the first step in painting. Apparently, a neutral Stain will help in getting close to the truest colors ( And possibly help in color matching). Hope this helps.

      Linseed oil and mineral spirits are completely different- one is an oil pressed from flax seeds, the other is a petrochemical. They'll both thin paints, but they react completely differently.

      Bippy Grace how about turpentine?
      Can i use turpentine instead of mineral spirits?

    • @BippyGrace
      @BippyGrace 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not, Hania Elkomi . My understanding is that turpentine breaks down the bonds inside paint much like nail polish remover breaks down nail polish. There's nail polish THINNER that works to de-goopify nail polish in a manner that does not damage the varnish.
      You can get a big jug of mineral spirits from Walmart for under $5.00.
      With art, you can do all sorts of things with all sorts of things- but if you want to get the best results, it's usually a good idea to go with the right tools, as high quality as you can manage. I have some early work from my teens where I didn't do that, and it's all falling apart from me not understanding that some of the things I was using were too acidic for long term stability, which is a real shame.

      Misana it will smoothen the canvas

      Misana he mentions that you get a truer color and if you have any show through, it won't be white showing through.

    Why not compare the stain to your palette?

    Would using acrylics for this be okay?
    W&N says so: www.winsornewton.com/na/discover/tips-and-techniques/acrylic-colour/acrylics-as-underpainting-layers-us
    but I want to make sure.

    Question here and I'm being honest why do you stain a canvas

    • @rawdahamdy6184
      @rawdahamdy6184 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steven Davis if the canvas white it would make the colors look darker than it really is and if it black canvas any color would be lighter so the neutral stain on the canvas is the perfect base

    Why don't you just stain some Gesso ?

    lol wtf who staples their canvas on the sides that's strange

      Alexandra M - It's been a fairly common way to do it for the last 300 or so years. Once framed you don't see the nails (or staples). Canvas with staples or nails on the back are intended for show without a frame.
