North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis is committed to preserving the American Dream for younger generations and supports commonsense policies that will generate economic growth and opportunities for working families.
Senator Tillis is a member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, Finance Committee, Judiciary Committee, and Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
Thom was born into a working-class family with his father and mother and five siblings. During his childhood, his family was frequently forced to relocate depending on where his parents could find work. After graduating from high school, Thom was unable to afford college, so he took a job as a warehouse records clerk earning minimum wage. He knows firsthand how difficult it is to raise a family while attending school at night, struggling to make ends meet.
Through hard work and dedication, Thom quickly moved up the corporate ladder, earning his degree at 36 and becoming a top-level executive at PricewaterhouseCoopers and IBM. Thom’s 22-year private sector career in technology and management consulting has provided him with a deep understanding of policy-making and the management of complex organizations.
Fueled by a desire to make a difference in his local community, Thom’s involvement in public service began by serving as the PTA president of his daughter’s high school and as a member of the Town of Cornelius Board of Commissioners. In 2006, he was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives and was selected by his peers to serve as Speaker of the House from 2011 to 2014. As Speaker, Thom played an instrumental role in enacting job-creating policies and reforming North Carolina’s tax and regulatory codes.
He lives with his wife Susan in Huntersville, North Carolina.

Thank you Sen Tillis, for your strong and eloquent speech in support of Ukraine. Up until I heard you I was losing faith in the Republican party having any real leaders who recognize why Ukraine matters. You have insured you have my vote if you run for re-election. Unfortunately there are too many other Republicans who seem to support Russia. For that reason, I now refer to myself as an Independent Conservative instead of a Republican. We need more leaders like you.

Thank you, Senator Tillis, for standing up for Ukraine. I often wonder if those who just want to follow a pattern of keeping job security instead of fighting for a nation who just want to be free as we are, can envision where we may be today if the French did not come to our aid during the American Revolutionary War. There is a price that has to be paid for all to be free. Senator Tillis, you hit the nail right on top of the head in your speech to your fellow Senators.

Their is a price for freedom sadly if Ukraine was to win which is doubtful they will not have freedom. The concern for Americans with children and grandchildren should be the border problem which is the number concern for American voters but yet that was dropped. Tillis is receiving praise for stabbing Americans in the back. He is part of the rot that needs to be voted out. If people in this blog would stop following the fake media hype and do a little research about Ukrain they would be eating their words. The truth is out their, sadly many Americans are to lazy to look.

Thank you Senator Tillis for taking a strong stand in support of Ukraine. I did not vote for you but my respect for you is ever increasing as you take a stand for doing what is right. Most people don't pay attention to history and how the appeasement of Neville Chamberlain with Hitler enable the Nazi regime to cause WW II.

Thank you for reminding me of this appeasement. As a teenager, I wrote a paper about Chamberlain's decision.I see several things about to be repeated as in the pre-WWII era. If we don't watch it very closely, and this includes appeasing Putin, any wake-up call will be too late.

Thank you for your vote Senator. Your action represents a moment of clarity for other Republican politicians to replicate. House Republicans have yet to see the light. They are more content in listening to Donald Trump. As an Air Force retired pilot with Pentagon service, I pray that he will be defeated. How can anyone trust him at this point. Just yesterday, he belittled our military service and also suggested that Putin can have his way with some NATO members. Unbelievable and UnAmerican. Cast him aside.

I am a North Carolina resident and a former life-long registered Republican who has since left the party and become an Independent. I didn't like Thom Tillis when he was first elected to the Senate as he campaigned as someone who had no spine and was a puppet for the GOP "leadership". I have come to like Senator Tillis' moderation since he has gathered his legs in this body. I'm now a Thom Tillis fan and truly appreciate all he's doing that's right. Keep up the good work, Senator Tillis, on behalf of North Carolinians and the whole of the US.

I really appreciated your post since I feel exactly the same way. I was a registered Republican but became a non-affiliated NC voter several years ago. I didn't vote for Senator Tillis when he was up for election for exactly the reason you point out. However, like you, my opinion of him has changed and I count myself a Tom Tillis fan appreciating his common sense approach, willingness to cross the aisle to get things done, and his overall moderate position. He is someone in Washington DC that is actually accomplishing things on behalf of NC and the entire US and I am very proud to have him as one of our NC senators.

Ditto on NC resident, former life-long Republican and now Unaffiliated (NC for Independent). Also ditto on first impressions on Thom and him now gaining a moral backbone. He on his way to being one of the few Republican congressmen who won't have to work to regain their self-respect when Trump is finally out of the political picture. To Thom: As a cold war and Gulf War warrior I absolutely believe that supporting Ukraine is a moral and strategic imperative. Clearly, for whatever reason, Trump is Putin's tool. We need Republican congressman who are unafraid of Trump and, therefore, willing to do the right things for the US. I wish my current Representative would grow the same moral backbone. My Representative, until he passed away, was Walter Jones. I knew him personally. Walter Jones was THE most honest member of the US Congress with respect to voting his conscience. My current representative has apparently suppressed what little conscience he might have had, beginning when he first ran for Jones' seat.

Thank you for voting with your brain instead of your party. I, a long time Republican who has changed to an independent following recent politics and the tragic demise of the party we once knew under the spell of Trump, am glad to see some common sense being expressed. It saddens and bewilders me to see supposedly moral people with conservative family values selling out their party to the extremism and idiocy of Donald Trump. I can see nothing that reflects Christian values or human values in the name-calling and juvenile behaviors of Trump. And, I am alarmed by how many other politicians are selling out their values (if they ever really had them - as opposed to claiming that they did) to ride on his coat-tails during an election year. Sad! Sad! Sad!

    • @Johanoeberg

From my perspective as an outsider (but indeed an ally = Sweden) whom been extensively following the US politics since 2015 (we can atleast thank the exteme Trump for that!), I think the Republican party knew they were playing with fire as early as 2016. But, since you more or less have a two party system, the immediate risks of standing up for the true conservative values, ie standing up against Trump, would possbily decimate large parts of the party support. So leadership took the easy route back then, and now it's even harder to take that moral correct decision. "What if Donald Trump dumps the GOP and creates a new party?!? Then we will never hold office in the forseeable future!"
As with all fires, it's always best to put the fire out at earliest time as possible, before it expands and the
Id put my chin out and claim that a two party system is actually NOT a "true" democracy; All to many people's political views aren't matched by the two containers so they will need either to dump some of the views or establish which party is the least bad. And in this extremly polarized setup that you currently have, a change an wote for a third party ("independent") is for many not a option because it will indirectly favor the party you feel mot opposite to...
Well. You're in a real predicament which I truly hope and believe you will get yourself out of. The consequenses, if not, are dire and effects the whole world.
Besides... "Absolute power corrupts absolutely" So good luck!

Thank you for standing up against russia. Ukraine needs our help. They can count on the European union but they also need us. It's sad that we are abandoning our allies when they need us most.

Thank you, Senator Tillis. I am an unaffiliated voter in High Point. You expressed my thoughts completely. If we allow Putin to win in Ukraine, the world will never be the same. You could not have said it better! Maybe you could influence some in the North Carolina delegation of the House to show the courage you have shown in voting for country over party. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Thank you and much respect for doing the right thing, the intelligent thing and the decent thing. I'm a Democrat but I am grateful to those Republicans who have courage, a backbone and a conscience and who act in ways that are best for our country and the rest of the world. I wish there were more like you.

Senator Tillis - I support your vote on this bill. It is unconscionable that we would abandon Ukraine. I admire your courage to make the right vote on this aid. We do not need to be known as a country that does not stand by their allies. I don't know what is wrong in the Senate and the House but it seems to me that the majority of the Republicans have lost their way.

What helps Ukraine helps the US! May your colleagues follow your altruism at this fraught time. Ukraine needs us. The world needs our leadership!

Thank You Senator Tillis for your wisdom today. After all the blood Americans shed on European shores and land in WWII, we cannot fall for Trump's idiotic whims and just hand Europe over to evil enemies again. You give me hope for the real Republican Party to emerge soon.

Thank you Senator Tillis! A relatively very small investment (4% of the annual US DoD budget of $1.55 Trillion) into Ukraine's security right now at this point in history is nothing what a full blown or prolonged covert proxy war with Russia, China, Iran, North Korea would cost (and maybe other BRICS countries?). Senator Tillis, you sir are absolutely correct - China is watching and we all know who they are rooting for. China will make their move for Taiwan, Philippines & elsewhere a second after they get a hint of Ukraine loosing or this becoming a "frozen" conflict. The newly formed Axis of Evil would feel emboldened to fight US interests in every corner of the world (war for resources in Africa, Middle East, South America, BRICS' de-dollarization efforts across the globe - sadly these are all perfect examples that are well underway). Supporting Ukraine right now is a tiny investment with HUGE security returns for US, EU, NATO & Allies around the world. Not supporting Ukraine would be shooting itself in the foot and will with full certainty lead to a large scale global war. Thank you Senator Tillis for standing with Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and making a correct decision at this enormously consequential historic moment!

Well done - Weakening Russia and supporting a European democracy with passion for living free is what all of this investment is about. This is a great bargain compared to what the value of a weakened and isolated Russia means to the West. I have great respect for your support of Ukraine.
