Norm, I absolutely cannot get enough of your videos, in fact I purchased one of your DVD’s. Everything you have here is way better than outstanding, it’s phenomenal. When I get excited about something, members of my family hear me go like this, zing zing, weird but it means total excitement and seeing this brings me total excitement and gives me ideas on what I’m able to do further on my o scale layout. Nice vid. The IPad really captures the details. I also like how your trains run so smooth... In watching some HO vids, the trains are so herky-jerky at times, I have to shut them off.
I don't have any idea what you are talking about with the camera and phone stuff but I think this is one of the very best layouts I've ever seen. Great scenery, structures, locomotives and rolling stock. Beautiful weathering really makes it complete. Makes it all easy to lose sight of that inside 3rd rail! The HH1 is wonderful to watch and listen to. Thanks for sharing.
Railroad looks great. I did get little buffering in 4K, but did not see much of a resolution difference when running in 2K. The still photo detail is really outstanding.

This will show how nerdy I am, but I’ve been working of modeling coal drag consists, so I appreciate the Berwind - BWCX - hopper. I’ve been doing a lot of research on Berwind to build a nice roster of Berwind hoppers. I’d love to see you do a ‘coal drag’ video with your I1.

I’m impressed! I’ve always preferred iPhones for videography over iPads but I suppose Apple finally improved them. Also I think it helps that your layout is so well lit. What kind of tripod were you using?
Thanks man! I am using a crappy old $4 Best Buy tripod with an eBay iPad holder. I have a new and more stable iPad holder on the way but the tripod is hanging tough.
Norm, I for one really appreciate the 4k video, especially of your excellent detailed layout, I've shot scenes of my layouts in 4k but I have never published on TH-cam in 4k. I will post in 4k next time. To make your backdrops even more realistic have you considered using a darker shade of sky blue closer to the horizon and grading lighter near the top?
It never ceases to amaze me, and I always share to my friends and colleagues that a) theyre Lionel trains and b) they’re 3-rail. I love hearing the large steam on start-up. May I ask a question? Are these stock speakers/decoders as they sound like they give you quite a “punch”. Thanks!
The Y3 is stock Lionel RS5.0 w/dual speakers which was fairly new at the time of this engine's production (2004 or 5 I think). The 3rd Rail J1a is using an early 2000s Lionel RS4 setup with modern baby Fat Boy speakers I installed (see my J1a series for more info). The M1b is using 'generic' RS4 with a single stock 3rd Rail speaker. There's some more insight into the electronics of that era in the M1b vids if you can out up with my droning on about it.
Hey Norm, first wow amazing! Second I love how use the darkness of your buildings, and scenery to really show off the locomotives smoke! Too many times the smoke will get lost in the light/sky colored scenery. Third how did you upload this video to TH-cam? I have been filming with my iPhone 11 Pro Max in 1080p and also in 4K, however TH-cam displays my video in 480, and I have to manually change it to 1080... Thanks! ~Brian
I save my iMovie vids to the gallery in 4K60 then upload using the TH-cam app. I used to be able to upload right out of iMovie when saving the edited video but that went away not too long ago. You’ll have to set your max upload quality in the TH-cam app settings for each device you are using. The playback is a function of your device’s and network performance I suppose. I can’t get past 1080p60 on my old iPhone 8.

I used to buy a lot of my new stuff at Wild Bill’s here in Detroit. Man those were the days! Now I buy a lot used stuff from all over, eBay, York, etc. My last new train preorders came from Great Lakes Hobby.
