He’s not being sarcastic about that even though everyone laughs. He was so tired of people calling him a prophet and a voice of a generation, guy just wanted to perform.

As a memory, I recalled it as him saying that and the audience laughing (obnoxiously) and him smirking... but that's really not how it unfolded. You're right he was completely serious when he said that and was not trying to be funny. And you can sorta see that look of frustration on his face at the reaction he gets.

That's Terry Ellis who went on to manage Jethro Tull and booked tours for Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, Roxy Music, Curved Air, Yes and King Crimson as well as setting up the Chrysalis label. Bob should have shown more respect!! Wiki him. Was once of the biggest names in the music business.
Hank Sinatra Ellis was nothing but a college student then. He didn't even want to do an interview but they thought he was there for an interview. You also need to realize how tired Bob was getting from touring nonstop.
..and yet he'll be best remembered as that tool that once tried to interrogate Dylan,...badly.
A private man, who would rather talk through his music. I think so many today have so many publicity moments to cover up lack of talent. This man has talent. He must really love music to keep putting up with this.
The best Dylan interview statement I ever heard is "Lotta ppl think they know me just from listenin' to my songs but they don't...& I can prove that in court !"
It's hard not to feel sorry for Bob in some of these situations. It seems like much of the press just didn't really know what to make of him. He really did seem frightened when he got a death threat; I just wanted to hug him and tell him everything's alright.
They all want answers that Dylan himself doesn’t have.

Dylan is funny, he takes the piss in interviews sometimes and the interview completely misses it.
In psychology they have a word called 'identity diffusion', meaning one with no self-concept/no-identity/a non-person.
It is used to denote someone who has no thinking for goals, future, or ambition. Such a person is called lazy or underachieving.
Not to know who you are or care to know.
The moment of 'crisis' (having to make a life decision) is what starts one on his path to having an identity. The guy who avoids making the 'big decision' never becomes.

He would have been happy to have moderate success and find himself. Instead he became bigger than he could have imagined, and for all I know he's still looking for something, like we all are. Even after we find what we want, we keep looking for more.
Yes. It's the looking that makes life worthwhile & interesting. Dylan is still working to this day. technically he doesn't have to but he is anyway.
How hard can it be? "What was it like seeing Buddy Holly a couple of days before he was killed?". "How ruthless did you have to be to make yourself stand out from the rest of the Village singers?". "Is the piano or guitar your main instrument for writing". "If you knew about the level of fame you would achieve would you do it all again the same way". "What song has been written that you wishe you had written" "If you were starting out today with the same songs as you did between '62 and '65 do you think you would make it?" etc etc
That sounds like a good question abt Holly, tho, of course there's a disconnect---nobody , incl Bob, knew it was days before Holly's death.
Plus---as w/ all aspects of Bob's pre-fame history----ther's some serious questions abt the facts.

Ken Machek & AustrianAnarchy Thanks AA. It's true what Ken wrote, I for one never could understand Bob Dylan and therefore didn't pay much attention to him or his music, this video has changed that.
"Don't Look Back" was NOT 1967. In 1967, Dylan was getting his life straightened out in rural New York state.
"Don't look Back" was '65.
"No direction Home" was '66.
And mid-66 was the motorbike crash which saved him from the self-destruction you see him heading for in these two films. Those were "great" creative times, but they were not sustainable.

In the albums I often get an impression of genius; at the very least genius of the verbal sort. But sometimes in interviews I find it impossible to avoid noticing a certain ordinariness of Dylan's mind. Maybe in his values too-here I'm thinking of an unexpected and strong impression that he set out on a career and laboured at it chiefly in order to 'be somebody.'
And efforts end in success, in my view, not mainly or not just on account of their excellence; they succeed when they please people, ordinarily many people, and the right ones at that. So I think America was simply ready for Dylan, looking for him, even. He calls himself a "song and dance man." I think we should take him at his word.
I think he signed a deal with the devil, so to speak, and he's been paying for it ever since. That's why he's on his never-ending tour. I don't think he's happy with his fame and celebrity, although he has probably more or less accepted it by now.

I thought that was very interesting: it wasn't about 'how hard I had to try', 'how much I gave' or 'how long it took'. Referring to _sacrifice_ like that didn't just come off the top of his head; it's a very strong word and pretty clearly he'd been painfully conscious of this feeling for a long time.

Thanks for the really cool upload! Media is too often a game for ratings (which includes manufactured revelations, hyperbolic attractions, giving the consumers what they want to see/hear/read, etc.) and not so much for the basic truths of whatever matter is being covered. In this respect, you gotta feel for Dylan a bit.

Are you kidding? I am fed up with this over adulation of Dylan. Sure, He wrote some great, if not the best stuff, but after Desire almost everything he puts out is crap and he cannot sing for shit. He lives in Malibu for Christs sake. He loves to play the "I am so mysterious" and off key card but it is part of this act. If he is really the god all you people make him out to be would he be putting himself out there just like any other entertainer?

16:40 passim is great. That is the Bob I really dig. His humility is palpable. It would have been a natural trajectory with all that adulation to get lost on that highway. I am just a song and dance man, a guitar player...I'm not god. The Brit, where Bob is taking the mickey, has been immortalized by Bob as "Mr Jones" the Thin Man: "something is happening, but you don't know what it is, do you Mr Jones?". Hilarious.
Bob Dylan was a funny guy too. In a satirical deadpan way. The interviewer at the end trying
to say that he has a different view of himself than his fans responds cool as cool gets "ain't that something?" His was a monumental achievement to folk rock, where there was a big space to fill and he would fill a huge area for his performances, or as we saw, a press conference. That was fun for him because nobody that I am aware of in all these years, ever pinned Bob Dylan down to a simple yes or no answer. God knows they've tried. I wonder if he has a cell phone?

I could listen to Studs Turkel interview person after person. I'd heard a lengthy interview with him and Jerry Garcia, and while not even pretending to be a dead head, he asked good questions and engaged Jerry in conversation.
Yea, I guess we disagree on old Studs. He is in this for kinda the opposite reason that you express, but hey, we all like different stuff.

Some people, like those interviewers, seem to think that because part of his art has words, that it's literature. I mean, literary critics can have a tendency to overanalyze things, because that's their job. It's not Dylan's job.
God Damnit Bobby. I laughed out loud when he responded to the gun question. He's not talking about what the interviewer is asking him. He told the time reporter in the other clip, "it's going to come fast, and you not going to get it all. Some of the words you might not hear." You have to listen carefully to what he's saying, and that may be too difficult.
He speaks through his lyrics. Although he won't explain what it means. He ignores the idea by explaining that it's what he thought at the time. Aside from being poetic. Which is only open expression of various emotions in songwriting

He was asked if the availabilities of guns was a big problem and he responded saying he doesn’t think there’s enough guns. If you’re still pondering this a week later.

what I find weird is that through the years Bob kept denying being the person that the general public took him to be. One critic in despair went as far as saying "look ,you even sound embarrassed to admit who you are.

Because in an interview once he said sth about having a deal with the Commander in Chief, not in these exact words, can't remember. And of course people find it more interesting to believe he was talking about the devil instead of God. I guess same people who now believe that Bill Gates is the Antichrist and wants to inject microchips via vaccines:)
Dylan is fascinating the music is irritating...why would we need the music drowning out so many great clips ?

I thing that people really liked Dylan because he was singing about things that were real and happening and he was speaking the truth about what was happening. I swear crazy things can happen when certain people hear the truth. They don't like it, they try to turn into anything in the world they can get away with turning it into. It must have sucked for him to be analyzed and criticized all the freaking time.

I think he suffered from social anxiety to a degree. He plays it off cool alright but the defensiveness comes from feeling like you're on trial.. and when you're defensive or anxious its hard to think straight.

The guy was extraordinary as a singer songwriter, the absolute best of the best but when it came to just talking to the public that loved and cared about what he had accomplished, the amazing output of songwriting and all the unique qualities that emerged from his mind....he was god awful. It was embarrassings to see him bob and weave through these interview. No sense of confidence that what he had done was a remarkable thing.
I agree wholeheartedly except for "no sense of confidence"; I'd have said "on the whole not a great deal of..." But thanks for your comment, which is the best in a much above average section.

17:28 - That young guy interviewing Dylan is a terrible fucking interviewer. You're not supposed to talk more than your subject. That being said, he seemed to get a warmer response than any of the others. Probably because he was a young dude.
