- In honour of the 13th Legion and their thankless sacrifices in the Shadow Crusade. Love em or hate em, the Ultrasmurfs were actually pretty cool in 30k and the Horus Heresy. Now I might be a heretic, but this is for my blue cousins out there...enjoy. Video footage all came from Mark Louis Spark's "Death of Hope". @@dj11o9er hmmm. As much as I love astartes (and believe me it is insane) and how amazing it conveys their tactical prowess. I feel like Death of Hope does a much better job at showing how durable the marines are and just how fast they are. Nothing says trans-human dread like a Space Marine with one arm charging at you with the speed of a car. Especially when a normal man with a missing arm would be found in a hospital bed.
I feel like both animations capture a different aspect of space marines and death of hope does a better job at showing the dread of a marine whereas astartes shows their cold and brutal efficiency.
Space marines"oh.....ohhh...I can't believe you just called us that...I thought we were friends"?
and some of them were already beyond evil if you look at what they decorated the interior of their ships with, you can almost smell the unbearable stench of rot.
Death of hope my friend ;) Best representation of Astartes during Calth. I would say even better than Astartes but unfortunately the project has been abandoned as far as I know :(
AH yes, the Betrayal at Calth.
Where the Word Bearers amassed a force of nearly 100k marines, together with elements of the World Eaters, in one of the largest muster points in Ultramar.
They had the numbers, the positioning and the element of surprise, all perfectly planned to cripple the Ultramarines for the rest of the conflict.
Even Guilliman gave the order not to fire on the traitor marines until he could properly understand what was going on and more Ultramarine deaths happened because of this.
Even with all these advantages, they failed.
The Ultramarines, once they realized what was going on, rallied with impressive speed (even by Astartes Standards), they quickly setup effective counter attacks, choke points and threw the entire Ultramarines playbook at the Word Bearers and World Eater armies and in less than 48 hours, not only had stabilized the devastating situation, they had began to make ground on their enemies.
In space it was worse, as the ambushed Ultramarines fleet rallied in such an effective fashion, that they forced the attacking forces into shameful retreat, after the Space Marines turned the entire conflict against them.
Finally, Guilliman was so enraged, that even before the battle of Calth was concluded, making sure the world was barely hanging on, then takes a rag tag fleet with him in pursuit of the other two fleets, in the process encounters 2 more fresh fleets of the Word Bearers and World Eaters and proceeds to pummel them and humiliate them, before going down to a nearby planet to fight his traitorous brother Lorgar.
During the Battle Guilliman was about to beat Lorgar, and then Angron appears and Guilliman ends up facing and holding on 2 Primarchs at the same time.
Guilliman only retreats, after Angron became a Demon Prince, because between Lorgar and Angron they could not beat enraged Guilliman.
Only then does Guilliman retreat and goes back to Calth, where the Ultramrines and their allies are in the process of mopping up the traitors.
The Ultramrines suffered nearly 50% losses, yet managed to inflict nearly 80% casualties on the traitors, turning what should have been a clear cut Chaos Victory into a minor, but critical Loyalist victory.
From then on Calth would become a rallying cry for the Ultramarines and the war that followed was counted in days after Calth.
The ultra marines where a better force then either, more organized more clinical.
The emperor always had two reasons for bombing the home-world of the word bearers. One he hates religion but he also hated how the world bearers sucked at their job. Granted that made lorgar snap so that was a critical mistake on the emperors part.
Fun fact did you know lorgar was genetically incapable of betraying the emperor. Emps took care of that with the bombing let that sink in.
In the end the emperors failing in understanding his sons let to his own downfall and the horus heresy.
Betrayal at Calth really made me love the ultramarines style of fighting, even with leadership gone (Guillimans was punching Word Bearers skulls off in space in a berserker rage) they managed to mount an effective defence to turn a one-sided slaughter on the same scale as Istvaan into a pitched battle of attrition that they were poised to win. Because Guilliman had trained his legion to be able to operate without him leading it, just as he trained his astartes to be more than just warriors but also philosophers and tacticians to prepare for a galaxy at peace after the Great Crusade. This style of warfare is why even 10,000 years after the primarchs disappeared Space Marines can still organise and fight cohesively.

He had the Ultramarines destroy Monarchia,Lorgar's perfect city.
Everything was on point except the number of Word Beares involved. They had ~50k marines taking part in the betrayal along with between 30 to 40k World Eaters.

What I like about this is when the Loyalist World Eaters aka War Hounds fight alongside the Ultramarines against the Traitor World Eaters and the Word Bearers.

But really, you'd need a shit ton of inquisitors, since the whole UM chapter and all their successors (barring a few exceptions like Emperor's Spears) denounce the very idea of Gods and the whole supernatural stuff in general.
Spark perfectly captures the baroque brutality of Astartes armor and also the massive posthuman trenbolone body flesh heaps, that are the bodies of Space Marines.
When a fan animation does more for an entire geneline of Space Marines than everything GW has done in 4 decades.
and then the TH-cam community bulllied him into quitting. Once again proving the toxic fans will always be the biggest problem. He could have been making official animations full time for the last few years, but instead people got mad at minor shit and he had a breakdown. I was never more ashamed to be a 40k fan when I heard about that. Why would anyone want to create for such ungrateful and hateful people? He worked for thousands of man hours without pay to the point where it damaged his relationship and people still gave him a ton of shit for it not being good enough. They even trashed him when he quit. You wont even name him. His name was Louis Sparks and he should be a reminder to anyone who thinks about creating something for free. The people wont appreciate it and will turn on you at a moments notice. This is GW cant even credit their animators. You psychos will track them down.

And to be honest, the "fans" being toxic wasn't entirely the worst part of it all (not downsizing it in the least, cause it was *bad*, but people are gonna be toxic online one way or another). It was the fact they always came at it from the position of "Well, this isn't like Astartes, the ultra-mega fan project that no one can ever hope to possibly surpass, and therefore it's absolute dogshit!" As if comparing amateur animators to a guy who's been working in the industry for a decade, if not more, is somehow a proper baseline for *fairness*. And even then, Louis Sparks was making absolute fucking strides with the work he was doing (whilst also directing and writing as well), as was SODAZ before GW and the "fans" killed his passion for 40k.
So now we're left with the animators who signed on with Warhammer Plus, a garbage tier service that for some reason likes to pride itself on taking inspiration from Disney Plus (which ends up posting their videos on YT anyways), who, while getting to work on a series they love (and even then it's likely done with some of GW's famous stipulations), are just a minute fraction of what could have been a fully fleshed out community of fan animators just skyrocketing Warhammer and Warhammer 40k to unprecedented heights in popularity. But like the Imperium of Man, the "fans" of Warhammer 40k can sometimes really be their own worst enemies. Not that GW is any much better.
For me as a German, this was the first time that I made a connection between Rammstein‘s Engel Lyrics and Space Marines. Now I am intrigued 😄 Thanks
There could be a lifetime of warhammer content, and it would not be enough. We need more Warhammer , Grimdark and 40k.

@chocolateman4312 in the horus heresy, it really was their ability for leadership and on the fly strategy adaptation. Not to mention like, US level tactical capability if not better. They didn't have any certain quirks that made them excel in any one field, but they had that to make them proficient in all fields. The issue is when they start winning in situations they shouldn't via plot armor and 30k depicts them as the former. Just excellent warriors that can maneuver and reinforce the battlefield

They have got the numbers at the hight of the crusade they had a 2:1 advantage against most any other Legion it was at least twice that at the end of the Heresy. By the time of the Dark Imperium, Ultramarine derived chapters make up 60% of all loyalists so its more like 10:1 they are very good at what they do; Organisation and logistics win wars as often heroic line braking when you cannot root out the enemy. On the field though no one kicks ass like the Blood Angels!
@@CoolCraftCool there was 250 thousand ultramarines and coming in second where the word bearers with 100 thousand so it probably closer to 3 or 4 to 1 for the other legions
@@oliverstarkey8676 Different writers give the legions different numbers and they do fluctuate Dark Angles were well over 150K closing in on 200k but they take a hammering in Rangdan Xenocides and they out right lost at Canis-Balor where they took heavy losses. In addition to the first the Iron Warriors, Sons of Horus, World Eaters are all suppoed to have had 150k or more Astartes at points during the crusade they are all supposed to be larger than Word Bearers. No I don't under stand how the World Eaters are on the list but I guess killing your marines in decimation after even sucseful campains just cause they took to long does gives you a lot of gen seed so there is that.
@@CoolCraftCool yeah i was thinking those numbers were a bit small but that all i could find out on my little search on the internet because i was sure iv read some where were it says the ultramarines legion had 350 thousand at some point
@@oliverstarkey8676 wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Space_Marine_Legion it lists sources from the as far back as second ED all the way to HH book serises so the numbers are as good as your likely to dig up unless you have the whole of GWs books downloaded in an easy look up format.

There is one tinzy tiny flaw in your choice of music.
An angel of death knows no fear and he also wanted to be an angel. Both things Ramstein actually sings about in that song.
"Wir haben Angst und sind allein, Gott weis ich will kein Engel sein" translates to "We are in fear and all alone, god knows i don´t want to be an Angel" (and yes i know the translation loses the rhyme and rythm)

Its from death of hope
The footage comes from "Death of Hope" which was made by Mark Louis Spark. His channel is renamed to SparksArtifex. For this and the Word Bearers video I used the Part 1 video and the two trailers. I'd make more, but Mark has discontinued the project unfortunately since people were harassing him and he has a full-time job.
