Man this song’s impact when it dropped was something serious. I was a hip hop head and a casual rock fan back then. This was literally a game changer in the music industry
This track is a rare moment where the video was just as important as the song was. Up until '91, it was all hair metal songs about partying with supermodel girls who would dance around all the guys that were wearing makeup and leather straps. When this video hit, it was a sudden shock to the system where the new generation of kids all looked like this - slacker clothes, hair that wasn't done in front of a mirror, and a fed up attitude towards "fake partying". It didn't last long - this whole generation was depressed. But just before rap finally broke out in to the mainstream in the mid-ish/early 90's, this track defined a whole generation in one video.
1991 - Two weeks into my freshman year of college I'm sitting in the student union building and MTV premiers Smells Like Teen Spirit in front of dozens of students. Minds blown. This song/video obliterated a decade of really terrible hair band videos and songs. Nirvana and the legendary bands of the rock grunge era changed the music scene almost in an instant.
Dude ...what fake partying are you talking about? I love Nirvana but to suggest that the era before was "fake partying"...the era before was balls to the walls partying, I know cause I was there. I was teens in the 80s...and 20s and still very young when Nirvana came out. It was all good. But I have to say the 80s party was bigger, better, more inclusive only because the mass incarceration process over partying didn't occur until the 90s. Today we are still very careful when and where we party bc of the 'BS policies of the 90s. Don't listen to me, do your own research on alcohol/drug incarceration over the decades.
The glamrock/hair metal era of the late 80s was just a small slice of 80s music, which was probably the most musically diverse decade ever. And nobody partied harder than people in the 70s and 80s. Nothing fake about it. Nirvana was the real deal when they came out, but their genre of music got copied and corporatized just like every other genre. Today that is pretty much all that exists.
That drummer is the superstar Dave Grohl of the band Foo Fighters. One of the most gracious and down to earth rockers I’ve ever seen. And I’m 60. You should watch him bring fans on the stage to play and sing with the band.
Dave is definitely the nicest guy in Rock it seems. FF is my favorite band. I love when he brings fans up to sing. Who else hands some one the microphone, drum sticks, and I've even seen him hand his own guitar. Very bad ass.
That makes sense. The impact this song had to culture as a whole was insane. Even people who never got into the grunge scene were still impacted by it for the rest of the decade. Wow. That fact really has me thinking deep into this now. Lol
@@rachelsullivan2926 It definitely got me into grunge. Everything about this song is perfect. I wish there were still mainstream songs like this with this level of talent and passion.

that was the real last wake-up call of a band for a whole generation. I can say that because I have seen Led Zeppelin and others live. When the song came out I was 30, nothing like that happened again, the music today is great, partly really great, and after listening to it you forget it again immediately. what kind of lucky child I am that I was allowed to grow up in the 80s and 90s, music still had a soul

The drummer is Dave Grohl, founder and frontman of the Foo Fighters. After Kurt passed away and Nirvana was finished, he really put in the work and made a successful career for himself.
Hey yo Dave Grohl is the drummer and brings the energy every time his life performances are incredible you guys would also probably like the pretender video by the Foo Fighters which he is the lead singer of.
Foo fighters is great. The drummer from Nirvana is the front man and rhythm guitarist for them. Dave Grohl is one of my all time favorite musicians ever.
The fact he had the foresight to make Taylor Hawkins, formerly of Alanis Morissette's band, his drummer proved his ear to me (along with years of previous work.)

And if you watch live performances, they were so tight as a band, must’ve rehearsed a lot. Almost perfectly reproduced their studio albums. They sound amazing doing their live versions.
The drummer, Dave Grohl, also played drums on Queens Of The Stone Age's song "No One Knows" (you'll be great to react to this music video), and he is currently the vocalist for the band Foo Fighters.
When he was first learning drums, he held his sticks backwards. He eventually turned them around. Nirvana picked him as their 5th drummer because he hit so hard. His beat is pure Gap Band.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Nirvana! A few more notable songs from Nirvana worth reacting to are - Come as You Are You Know You're Right About a Girl Heart Shaped Box Sliver Where Did You Sleep Last Night (MTV Unplugged)
Saw them in concert at the legendary First Avenue nightclub in Minneapolis, 1991. A band I knew was opening for them and got me and brother in to the show. I was 22 and had just graduated college a few months before. This song changed the music scene overnight. There was just something special and different about it - when you heard it, you just knew it was special.
Dave Grohl wrote a song "Marigold" a B-side on single "Heart-Shaped Box" that I still hold in respect as the first Foo Fighters song. Years before Foo Fighters existed.
Little tid bit of info. Dave the drummer you have seen in a commercial recently where he's yelling up to Kevin Hart "I'm making lasagna. Do you want some lasagna!".
I'll never forget buying the single to this on tape lol. I had this blasting for the whole day. The energy was something new for me and it sounded so different from the hair metal before it. It lead me down a rabbit hole that introduced me to groups like Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Sound garden and other grunge groups; as well as alternative bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Blur, Collective Soul and Presidents of the United States. Nirvana was a whole vibe.
Dave G went back and fourth with this 11 year old girl , playing drums. the little girl finaly played with Foo Fighters at a live show , and she killed it
this was one of them songs, that you had no intention of learning the lyrics too, but it was played so much, you unintentionally can sing it word for word.
nirvana took over the 90s. the lead singer passed away in 1994 by suicide , at the age of 27 years old. he was so young. please react to more nirvana. i recommend “aneurysm” live at the paramount 1991
I remember the first time I heard this on MTV and just being dumbstruck staring at my tv. Just absorbing it. The second time I saw it I knew I had a new favorite song and that things were now different. I was 16, a late GenXer. Such a great time period to come of age. We were the last era to grow up in the “old world.”
Perfect explanation! Sometimes I try to listen to this song like I have never heard it before, to try to get that feeling back. Sometimes it works and I can feel the nostalgia, "wow, what is this? who is this?" experience again. First time I saw this video, I literally called up all my buddies, and was like, "Hey, you have to check out this band!" Like you said, something about it was different and refreshing. Like we all said, "finally, something new" No more Slaughter, White Lion, Cinderella, Ratt, Whitesnake . . . not there was anything wrong with those bands, but the music was just turning into the same ol' mashed up crap we kept hearing over and over. It was time to put it to rest.
The drummer got the opening beat from the GAP band. Just heard that story this year 😂 Also you know the drummer is a badass when all you can see is sticks and hair lol.
That drummer is now a legendary super rock star! The Foo Fighters is his band and they are what you want to hear if you want to listen to the best rock n roll there's ever been! I suggest Times Like These, All my Life, the Pretender, and Learn to Fly, their best songs in my opinion. They're an amazing band, so amazing in fact they sold out at Wembly Stadium in just minutes when they're tickets went on sale. Have you ever seen Wembly Stadium? It's huge!!!! Amazing guy, a m amazing band, you really need to react to them. If you don't, your definitely missing out!
My favorite band!!! 💪🥁🎵🎸🎤🎶 I love all those songs. "Everlong" Live at Wembley was incredible. Dave sang it acoustic then brought it home total banger at the end of the song. Bad ass! Watch it if you haven't!
When Nirvana first debuted in 1989, no one thought that this punk rock-inspired trio from Seattle would revolutionize music in the 1990's for a brief moment and changed the game forever... This music video was shot in 1991 on a low budget - Nirvana had played a show that night, and just invited their audience to the video shoot. Even tho the band was just playing to a track on the P.A. in a school gym, the audience went nuts and trashed the set. They were still broke when this video hit MTV in the fall of '91, and by November, the album 'Nevermind' knocked Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous' album to hit #1 on the US charts. Despite his limited skills playing guitar, vocalist/guitarist Kurt Cobain knew what he wanted his band to sound like when Nirvana came together in 1987 w/ Krist Novoselic on bass... Chad Channing soon joined on drums. Kurt wrote all the songs and most of the music for Nirvana, and completed the first album 'Bleach' in 1989 on a small budget for indie Seattle label Sub Pop. Nirvana was raw and primal, and had a lot of melody as well... the first record sold well, but Nirvana was not a typical rock band that sold millions of records in 1990. They looked weird, dressed cheap, and sounded under-produced. In early 1991, drummer Dave Grohl joined Nirvana and brought his hard-hitting beat into the band. An offer from Geffen Records that year got Nirvana back in the studio that year, and they cut their second album 'Nevermind' w/ producer Butch Vig. When 'Nevermind' was released in 1991 and "Smells like teen spirit" was the first single, Nirvana thought they would never become as big as Guns N' Roses or Metallica... but MTV made the single a huge success and 'Nevermind' sold millions that year. By 1992, Nirvana's unexpected success brought focus on the Seattle scene, which the press dubbed 'grunge' rock... Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains... all had huge hit records in '92. Kurt Cobain had been evicted from his apartment in '91, and then he was making million$. The band ended the year w/ a record of unreleased Nirvana tracks titled 'Incesticide'... However, pressure from success and health problems had driven Kurt Cobain into h addiction to curb his pain. The sudden fame was a burden on Cobain and not what he expected. Nirvana wanted a return to their primal, raw sound on the next record 'In Utero' in 1993, and performed an acoustic set of original songs and covers on MTV 'Unplugged' that year. However, on tour, Kurt was slowly coming apart. In Europe around early 1994, he reportedly attempted suicide, but survived... He was flown back to the States and checked into rehab, but jumped the wall eventually and took a flight back to Seattle... Kurt Cobain's body was found in his home by an electrician in April 1994. He had written a suicide note to his fans, shot himself up w/ h one last time, then took his own life w/ a shotgun to his head. Kurt Cobain was only 27 when he died. Nirvana was over. The band released the 'MTV Unplugged' acoustic record in late 1994... Cobain's final song recorded w/ Nirvana was "You know you're right" and it was released in 2002, showing how much turmoil he was in by his lyrics. Nirvana's drummer Dave Grohl was devastated after the death of Kurt Cobain; he had recorded an album of his songs while in Nirvana, on which he sang lead, played guitar, bass and drums. After some time off, he launched a new project Foo Fighters in 1995 and refused to perform any Nirvana songs live... Foo Fighters began touring that year and Grohl built his own success separate from Nirvana, and he embraced his role as vocalist/guitarist of Foo Fighters til today.
I was a teenager in the early 90s. That smile on her at 6:19 is glowing. She would have been into it back then 😚 ..and him, we would have welcomed him with open arms. Kurt would have wanted that, too 🤗

If you like drumming you should check out the band Skillet, they have a dope female drummer. Their song and video for Awake and Alive is hella hype, y'all would definitely dig it.
He said Dave was the best drummer for the band bc he hit so hard you could hear the drums through the music. Dave ended up starting foo fighters after Nirvana
Oh my God All of a sudden I'm 17 years old, jammin this shit in my system! Great job guys. I come from the era of classic grunge. Good shit for real! Love it
I lived in Seattle in 1980s and 90s. The city was electric with all the musicians moving in. Walking downtown you got to see many of the band members just walking around. You could see these groups for less than $10 and be blown away. Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam we were lucky enough to see them all. Such a fun time. ❤✌
One of the most important songs in rock history - it changed everything. Nirvana was part of the Grunge movement, which originated in Seattle in the early 90s. You had Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and many others. Check out some other Nirvana songs like Lithium, Heart Shaped Box, School, Where Did You Sleep Last Night, Negative Creep, Aneurysm, etc. Also check out Alice in Chains - Them Bones, Soundgarden - Outshined, Pearl Jam - Evenflow, Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike.
The drummer is Dave Grohl also the lead singer of the Foo Fighters (if you haven’t heard of them either take a listen)the lead singer you likes voice so much was Kurt Cobain who started a new genre of music and changed a whole generation. Plus he was ahead of his time. This was his message back when CDs would have a pamphlet type thing that would sometimes have lyrics, song list w/e the band or rap artist wanted to put Kurt included a message for their second album ‘In Utero’ was “If you’re a sexist, racist, homophobe or basically an asshole, don’t buy this CD. I don’t care if you like me, I hate you.” Good to see Gen X liking older music. If y’all are Gen X looks like it atleast. And if you haven’t heard this song I assume you are.
I was 14 when nevermind came out living in sandpoint, Idaho at the time when grunge music was taking off and all over the pacific northwest it was amazing.
The drummer (Dave Grohl) drummed to this entire song, while it played on loud speakers, during a show of his, a few months ago. The entire time his hair's in his face, and he's banging his head. After Kurt Cobain died, For a long time, Dave couldn't even talk about Nirvana, much less play Nirvana songs, because it made him sad. So seeing him drum to Nirvana again, is awesome. The video is on TH-cam if you want to check it out.
Dave Grohl, the drummer - started his own band called the Foo Fighters. He played ALL the instruments but eventually invited others in to make the band. Fun fact - Dave Grohl Is a big BeeGees fan and did a cover album. (I know you’re liking the BeeGees too ha)
Another great reaction. Love the zen/Sabbath T-shirt combo. Keep up the rock brother, it’s worth the trip. Speaking of drummers I need to check out the Pneuma reaction. Like how you recognize something outside your wheel house.
As mentioned but just to reiterate .... Dave Grohl, the drummer, is now lead singer and a guitarist in Foo Fighters. One of the few bands who came to South Africa, so that was awesome. Also check out the Rocking 1000 story and his battle with Nandi Bushell, an 11 year old drummer. One of the nicest guys in rock history. Oh and check out his broken leg story.
This was dope af! This was another joint that I was fkn with as a kid. I just watched your latest Bone Thugs video and that was dope af too! I love the drums. It's probably my favorite instrument. My family didn't have the dough growing up to get me a kit to learn to play. But I've always had a crazy appreciation for the drums. Dave Grohl is one of my personal favorite drummers. There are so many unbelievable drummers! But this was dope af! Appreciate both of y'all! Much ❤ to you both and the whole Recklezz community!! ✌❤ y'all!!
This "Grunge" Band is from Seattle. The genre of "Grunge Rock" was started in that city in the early 1990s. Kurt Cobain was so talented, and as we have all seen hundreds of times before, He was found dead in his Seattle Mansion of an apparent Heroin overdose. The rumors of murder continue to this day.
Dave G went back and fourth with this 11 year old girl , playing drums. the little girl finaly played with Foo Fighters at a live show , and she killed it
We all got different flows in life! Ong!!! 💯 🙏
R.i.p. Kurt cobain
I remember watching MTV news and was shocked to hear the news about kurt
You want to understand Nirvana, watch Nirvana Live at the Paramount. Off the charts good and truly captures them.
You guys should listen to 'where did you sleep last night ' from the live unplugged in New York, it's Epic ✌🏽
This and the man who sold the world are my favorite
this was one of them songs, that you had no intention of learning the lyrics too, but it was played so much, you unintentionally can sing it word for word.
nirvana took over the 90s. the lead singer passed away in 1994 by suicide , at the age of 27 years old. he was so young. please react to more nirvana. i recommend “aneurysm” live at the paramount 1991
First time I saw the vid was aged 13 in late 1991....
I was in awe...
Nirvana just blasted me...
Nirvana "The Man Who Sold the World" on MTV Unplugged
I remember the first time I heard this on MTV and just being dumbstruck staring at my tv. Just absorbing it. The second time I saw it I knew I had a new favorite song and that things were now different.
I was 16, a late GenXer. Such a great time period to come of age. We were the last era to grow up in the “old world.”
Nirvana was lightening I'm a bottle. RIP Kurt!
Nirvana ended 1980's hair metal. This song and album was a shock to the music industry.
Just heard that story this year 😂
Also you know the drummer is a badass when all you can see is sticks and hair lol.
The drummer is now lead guitar and singer of the Foo Fighters Dave G.
I love all those songs.
"Everlong" Live at Wembley was incredible. Dave sang it acoustic then brought it home total banger at the end of the song. Bad ass! Watch it if you haven't!
Rico is bringing "The Pretender"
tomorrow! Check it out! 🎵🔥🎤🎸
the drummer dave grohl is 1 of the few in the rock and roll hall of fame 2 times once for nirvana and once for the foo fighters
You'd absolutely love watching Dave bang those drums on the video for Queens Of The Stoneage 'No One Knows'.
Great Reaction as always 🙏
Bad ass share of Nirvana & Kurt's rise to fame and untimely, tragic end. Nailed it.
I was a teenager in the early 90s.
That smile on her at 6:19 is glowing.
She would have been into it back then 😚
..and him, we would have welcomed him with open arms.
Kurt would have wanted that, too 🤗
That drummer is the lead singer for the Foo Fighters....they have a crazy track list
Dave has a video of himself playing the drums to this song now. Just ran across it the other day.
Dave Grohl is the drummer ......then he became the singer for and created the Foo Fighters ........one of the greatest bands ever ........you two already have heard their songs, whether you realize or not

Rico is bringing "The Pretender"

@@jennhurl that is awesome .....I look forward to it.......on a side note ......check out Foo Fighters at Wembley Stadium when John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page come out with them to do some Led Zeppelin songs .......was magical
Now this is more like it. My favorite Nirvana song of all time. Classic. I like guitars better than drums, but in this song I like how they both balance each other out. Yeah that energy is through the roof.
If you like drumming you should check out the band Skillet, they have a dope female drummer. Their song and video for Awake and Alive is hella hype, y'all would definitely dig it.
Skillet has great workout music!
@@tracyrrg9328 Most definitely 💪
Hell yeah! Invincible gets you jacked up!
"Here we are now, entertain us!" Famous words when arriving to a party. :)
Your dad, I mean, Jay-Z used these lyrics, check it out, Holy Grail, it's an awesome song.
He said Dave was the best drummer for the band bc he hit so hard you could hear the drums through the music. Dave ended up starting foo fighters after Nirvana
Fun fact the drummer is Dave grohl who is the lead singer in the band foo fighters. I'm sure you've caught some of there music around
Let's never forget Chris Cornell. A true legend
This song with the album single handedly swirched the music industry this album came out had ALOT of 80s debouchery rock bands were done...

Oh my God All of a sudden I'm 17 years old, jammin this shit in my system! Great job guys. I come from the era of classic grunge. Good shit for real! Love it
Thank you Heather!!
@@OfficialLifeWithRecklezz you're welcome as always
I lived in Seattle in 1980s and 90s. The city was electric with all the musicians moving in. Walking downtown you got to see many of the band members just walking around. You could see these groups for less than $10 and be blown away. Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam we were lucky enough to see them all. Such a fun time. ❤✌
music brings people and cultures together. LOVE THIS SH*T!
The drummer went on to be the singer for the Foo Fighters. You'd love them
One of the most important songs in rock history - it changed everything.
I don’t care if you like me, I hate you.”
Good to see Gen X liking older music. If y’all are Gen X looks like it atleast. And if you haven’t heard this song I assume you are.
I was 14 when nevermind came out living in sandpoint, Idaho at the time when grunge music was taking off and all over the pacific northwest it was amazing.
The drummer (Dave Grohl), is the singer for the Foo Fighters
The drummer is Dave Grohl. He is now the lead singer of the Foo Fighters. You should check them out. Best of you / Pretender etc
Rico is bringing "The Pretender"
tomorrow! Check it out! 🎵🔥🎤🎸
Kurt colbain was legendary all his mtv unplugged songs dope af
A great reaction video to one of the greatest rock tunes of all time! Thank you! Much appreciated!
If u want to see the drummer go absolutely ham, u need to watch Nirvana's performance of Aneurysm Live at the Paramount! Dave goes CRAZY on that song!
90s grunge rock was so awesome I was in high school then so many great bands
Check out Def Leppard Pour some sugar on me, the drummer lost an arm in a car accident and learned to play with one arm and kills it!
Recommend Heart Shaped Box next!
Yeah!! It's Dave Grohl!! Future2 Times Hall of Famer.
Nirvana was the biggest rock band of the 90's
after the first time I listened to it it stuck in my head for 20 years, I hope you like it and good luck
When I was 18 and had just started clubbing in the UK this tune had just come out and we used to go mental on the dance floor. Oh happy days 😃
✌❤ y'all!!
Ice Nine Kills - Hip to be Scared
Dude on the drums kills it
I love that when Nirvana got the question "What does the song "Smells like teen spirit" mean?" they said.. We dont know...yet.
Rhyming "Contagious" with "Entertain Us" is 🔥
🔥🔥🔥
I’ve never been a big fan of Nirvana but I can appreciate them. However, they are one of those bands that changed music.
My dad has that same Led Zeppelin shirt
This "Grunge" Band is from Seattle. The genre of "Grunge Rock" was started in that city in the early 1990s. Kurt Cobain was so talented, and as we have all seen hundreds of times before, He was found dead in his Seattle Mansion of an apparent Heroin overdose. The rumors of murder continue to this day. Fame and money don't make you happy.
Homie on the drums is the great Dave Grohl. Lead singer of the Foo Fighters now. Great reaction!
this was my 1st album i owned on cassette tape when i was 8 in 93 when i got it lol, forever a classic and such an influence.....thanks mom ;) lol
