This review continues the Official Unofficial Donkey Kong celebration at the CGR Undertow underwater compound. This video game, Donkey Kong Country, helped put Nintendo back at the top of the video game industry hierarchy. This CGR Undertow video game review features Donkey Kong Country video gameplay footage and commentary from Classic Game Room's Derek.

The graphics for me are not outdated at all. I still find this game as beautiful as in '94. Water & Snow levels are so mysterious and well made... It's unbelievable !
+GameDjeenie I agree. DKC has aged beautifully and the refresh rate, super tight controls, and gameplay.... ahhhhhhhh sooooo goood!
+GameDjeenie Agreed so much. Oh my god that first snow level--the one where it goes from sunny to full blizzard--still haunts me to this day. AND THE MUSIC OH MY GOD THE MUSIC. This was the first console game that truly felt like it immersed you in its environment. (Myst gets the nod for PC)
i seen much worse music and graphics on a 1999 ps1 platformer lol
they aren't outdated but they can be pretty crispy/cluttered and I had trouble seeing things with them, they might have even hurt my eyes

This game is a master piece and a good example of the importance of the artistic part in a video game. I love it.
Donkey Kong Country still looks damn good after 20 years!
This game takes computer programming and turns it into pure ART. The same thing was done with Yoshi's Island. For these and plenty other reasons, the SNES will forever be my favorite era in gaming history.
These graphics still look cool as hecc. And this soundtrack is so good. It feels like such a classic but doesn't seem like its aged at all. If anything its more cool than ever

My favorite childhood game. There's just something insanely gorgeous about its visuals and audio (even to this day) and then of course the gameplay is just top notch. It my not be the best game ever, but it has my heart more than any other.

I never played any of the Donkey Kong Country games until 2010 and I played all of them and found them to be some of the most enjoyable gaming experiences ever. And the soundtrack is amazing.
You pointed out perfectly what we all love about this game. This is one that i could always play again and enjoy it. The Gameplay the atmosphere and and and... ah its just perfect.

I remember when DK Country first came out. When I saved up enough money I got a Game Boy, DK Land, and a Super Game Boy instead. It wasn't until 15 years later that I finally got my own cart of DK Country. I still yet to play more than the first few levels as the battery for the save feature is dead :(
I remember getting this in 1994 and playing this for hours on end. My 5 year old brain could not fathom the awesomeness the visuals and the gameplay that could be possible on my SNES.
This game is by far the definitive reason anyone who had it back in 94 chose to keep their SNES versus trading it in for a Sony ps1 or a Saturn. It rivaled & surpassed the next gen games @the time making people wonder if buying a next gen system was really necessary for a moment. In terms of fun any newcomer would enjoy this game more than the games that we're made for the ps1 or Saturn @the time in my opinion & I'm sure millions of others would totally agree👍😎
God this made me remember how awesome Rare was...I still miss those guys.
Donkey Kong Country is the first game I ever owned/played and I have always had a special love for it. And the music!! Even now I listen to the game's soundtrack. When I decided to teach myself how to play piano, the first song I learned was Aquatic Ambience. In my opinion, this game is a masterpiece in every way.

Graphics were amazing at the time. Nothing like that had been seen. Kids nowadays are spoiled with graphics.

Man...the first Donkey Kong Country was the first game that I can remember playing...
I had this for the GBC, it kicked ass.
Then I got the SNES version and holy shiot, this game is fantastic!
This game has aged beautifully, it still looks good and plays well today.

The Brambles Symphony is simply one of the greatest video game songs of all time. I remember just pausing the game and just sitting in awe of it. Rare was in it's prime when it worked with Nintendo. Now, they're a mere shadow Microsoft shoved in their basement. Rare should've went 3rd party.

I agree, Ocarina of time is a great game, but people need to stop calling it the best game ever when Donkey Kong Country deserves that title( I should add that I'm joking, its all about opinions, but for me DKC is the best game ever)

the mountain in the background at 5:26 is a real mountain and i didnt realize this back in 1994, but now that I hike the north cascades in washington state, i can say without a doubt that it is mt shuksan. its so awsome that RARE put this in the snow lvls of DK country.

i totaly agree with you donkeykong country was a mile stone in gaming history,not only dit the game brought donkeykong back alive but it also pushed the snes to it,s ultimate limmit and killed sega with their 32x and cd rom addon as well as other competitors,but it also revolutionized video game technology with new rendering technics,this game caused an huge earth kweak in the game industry.
i own this snes game today for about exactly 11 years and still love it.
This game is a timeless classic. I was impressed with the graphics and loved the sound track. This is one of the defining games of my childhood other than Super street fighter, super mario and sonic the hedgehog.

Such a great game ;_; I remember seeing pictures in Nintendo Power and being blown away. Also the music is amazing.
Donkey Kong Country is my favorite game of all time, I first played it when I was 5 and have loved it ever since. I'm not to big on DKC 2 or 3 though, I like them but to me they don't hold up to the first. I also still need to get around to playing the DKC Returns games.

I agree that this is perhaps not only one of the most memorable games that bears the "donkey kong" name, but it's also really influential for the SNES itself, if you had a SNES already it made you proud of having it and making a great decision when you chose it, on the other side it showed that the console still had a lot to give and made a lot of people buy it as a second console, that's why the SNES ultimately surpassed the Genesis in sales in the US even if the first had a massive following.

this was one of the few games that made me wish I had a SNES along with my Genesis. This, Mega Man X (which I later got for PC), Super Mario Kart, Super Mario World, and a few others, but I'll always be a Sega fan first.
i remember playing this as a kid...me and me dad used to play it for HOURS!...i would even go back and just play my favorite levels i just loved it THAT MUCH but unfortunately my cartridge isnt working anymore so i have to get a different copy...i still reckon it beets games like CoD and Gears ANY DAY of the week
@secondaryscorpion He wasn't involved in the production or direction in any official capacity. The quote went: "Donkey Kong Country proves that players will put up with mediocre gameplay as long as the art is good," which he eventually walked back, explaining that at the time Nintendo was pressuring him to make Yoshi's Island's graphics look more like DKC.

This game is a legend, music, gameplay and graphics are awesome and it has a good number of levels and variation.
Today we have better tecnology than before, but games these days dont leave an impact on your life like these games on the snes.
This is such a great game
I think wat a lot of games get wrong is their underwater levels and DKC in my opinion had the best and most fun underwater levels. The music grabbed u and it was phenomenal i still hum the tracks now and then. The most recent good use of underwater levels was rayman origins. That is also an amazing game..

What's weird is that I had this game but remember very little about it...for some reason it didn't make any lasting impression on me. That said, Rare made some truly INCREDIBLE games and I actually think this one still looks stunning! I'm thinking maybe I should buy it again on eBay and give it another go.

@pengywengyman - They actually confirmed somewhere that he is the original DK. The current DK is DK Junior from Donkey Kong Jr. and Super Mario Kart.

Don't get me wrong I play alot of modern games such as call of duty, battlefield, need for speed, burnout, grand theft auto, the sims etc but these old classics will always be the best to me.
