This is so cool! Edith Wynne Matthison (Danaë) was my great-great aunt, and I never knew she was in a silent film!

Isn't it interesting that there is always three of those witchy old ladies? Remember Macbeth.

@@sayakhalder8601 Well, I don't know the exact answer as well but since I want to answer your question and satisfy my curiosity I started to make a little research about the issue. I found out that the issue is more complicated than I thought and doesn't have one specific answer. I am trying to deal with my assignments so I couldn't spare enough time to read all the perspectives even if I want to. Anyway, there are several points of view about the topic. On of the views is that the structure of a complete soul is four but four is 3+1 according to Jung. The extra one is completing the other three. So three witches may be representing the complete power of women. I also learned that in different legends there is one more witch that is eccentric than other three. An another view associates three witches with the rule of three in Paganism. Rule of three defends that an action has three times as big reaction. It is explained by the past, present and future. This is where Greek mythology comes in. Hekate is a virgin goddess that represents those three times, the past, the present and the future. Hekate is a representation of woman which is associated with sin. Sin and devil is associated with triangles most of the time. We also know that there is a belief of women being the source of original sin. Lastly I learned that there is also figures that called The Fates in greek mythology, three women who are able to determine one's destiny after being born. That's all I got, I hope that it was useful and thank you for the question. I would be pleased if you dig deeper into this issue and come up with new and more organized ideas. I believe that you shall not confine yourself to this point and trust the points that I came up with. You can make a research about these points and find more evident and provable information. Here are some links that I skimmed through:

(Well, even if wikipedia is not a so-called confidential source, it gives a clue about the topic.)
      Take care!
