This feels so fun. It's like people were just thinking, you know, why not run some services with vintage equipment for a good time. And someone just said yeeah mate.

Outstanding video, thank you Martin. I rode the rear motor to Lilydale and the new rear motor back to the city, so you were up the other end for that leg. This video well-captures the excitement of the day, and really reinforces just what a good job the Steamrail folks did in planning it and carrying it out.

Thanks Matt, glad you enjoyed it! Easily the most fun tour that's run in recent years I reckon.

Remember the Tait sets well, going to Lilydale from Albion with my aunt and cousins for a picnic in the late 1960's.Juyst loved the whine of the traction motors and the interior shot, great work, thank you.

A bit of excitement for those the commuters to see heritage old and 'new' train technology passing them.

Awesome video mate! You got some awesome shots. So sad parallel runs can't happen very often. 11:41 Hi Will James!

Much appreciated as were the interior shots.
Stayed up after midnight last night watching the whole vid after I noticed it in my subscriptions.

The Taits carried a lot of people . It’s amazing to think that people were standing right near the open doors at peak time. I see that the doors are all shut now.

We were still allowed to have the doors open on tours up until 2004. But having them closed was understandably a requirement for their 2022 return.

@@Taitset it just wasn’t an issue when they were in service. I loved riding on a Non Stop Caulfield to the City train at about 8.12am . Always mainly the same people . That train used to really get going some days. I felt sure it was coming off the track a couple of times especially on the bend before South Yarra. I don’t know how many passengers they carried but always felt it was more than the Harris. They really were a good train .

G'day Martin, finally got a spare hour plus to view your coverage of this excellently planned tour and WOW! You have captured the essence of the day so well and the best part is seeing all those smiling faces (many known to me) enjoying the parallel running as well as the sight and sound of both trains. I couldn't spare the whole day, but managed to get the morning run through at Blackburn, the returning steam at Heatherdale and the afternoon parallel at Auburn. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences of the day with the TH-cam world. Thanks must, of course, also go to Steamrail and the professional railway workers who made this day such a memorable one.🙂

I love when the much more modern sparks toot back at the oldies

With all the tooting of the horns, I was expecting to hear Shave and a Haircut at least once - 18:35
My family lived in Melbourne for a year when I was a kid and I got to ride this line many times, though mostly in the more modern Comengs, save for the one occasion of riding in the 4D (coupled to a Comeng) from Canterbury to Richmond

that one you are filming in, l used to catch that into the city from the western suburbs, l loved the soft leather seats, the elegance of the compartment seating, (the toilet with a pipe straight down to the tracks was a laugh as a kid), but most of all, l miss being able to open a damned window. Thanks for the nostalgia trip buddy :)
edit, the last time l rode the rattler was the Altona line, if memory serves one of the last it ran on, they had upgraded most of the rest of the lines by then.

I remember the Red Rattlers well but they were completely red. The white windows look much better.

This livery is the 1930s one, with the grey stripe along the windows. 341T had been restored in all red, and 470M (in my profile pic) and 327M will also be red when completed!
