It would be nothing for them to bite the seal and let it bleed out a little if their intentions were to let the seal tire itself out. From the looks of it, it looks like a training session for the younger Orcas.
    Notice the Orca with the largest dorsal fin doesn't really participate in the wave making.
    He is just there giving instructions.
    You can see that after the seal falls into the water, one of the Orcas swim right past the seal and lets it get back on the ice.
    At the 2:11 mark, more Orcas show up and participate in the class coming out of the water in unison.
    If they wanted that seal for a meal, the largest Orca only need to smash the ice.

    Very impressive - Both the Orcas' intelligence as well as the seal's evasive ability.
    Orcas in other parts of the world briefly beach themselves in an effort to catch seals. If the orcas here knew this technique, one could 'beach' on top of the berg, keeping the seal off the berg, if not catching it outright.

    • @lukasgnarfer820
      @lukasgnarfer820 5 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      possible but as many people suggest this might be even more impressive as the orcas are possibly just training a young one this technique, by circling the ice floe the seal has no choice but to keep hopping back onto it, wich gives the next generation of whales a perfect learning seassion on how to hunt seals, since the seal keeps hopping back on the ice on the opposite side that it went into the water it is very unlikely that the orcas never had a chance to grab it when the seal went right by them, very impressive either way :)

      that's the strategy of the orcas making an artificial tidal waves to wash out seals to the ice floe. Based on statistics only a hundred orcas could do this tactics its a difficult to them to mastered it in a synchronized way. They adopt it through training like breaching and playing with the pods as their practice and training ground. The Intellectual Quotient of an orca is as same as a 16 year old human. Its hard to underestimate this incredible intellect mammals.
