  • We REALLY like the Acura TLX Type S, but it just doesn't work for us. The TLX Type S is gorgeous, comfortable, fun to drive, and also gorgeous, but as practical everyday transportation for a family, even an enthusiast dad, the Acura TLX Type S just doesn't work very well. The back seat is laughably small compared to Acura's own Integra Type S, which is a smaller vehicle with FAR more usable space. Because the Acura Integra Type S is so well packaged (and the Integra Type S only comes in a manual transmission), it might make for the better enthusiast daily driver. That doesn't mean the Acura TLX Type S isn't without its charm. It's a super cool car in many ways, and it feels more special than the Integra Type S from behind the wheel, but for something that has to do double duty as an actual sedan, the TLX Type S falls a bit short. It's a shame because it's an easy car to love in many ways, but it has a few crushing flaws that make it a tough sell. What do you think of the Acura TLX Type S? Let us know in the comments!

    I absolutely LOVE this video! I just caught wind of you and your Wife! You’ve added to the reason that my dream car is this Acura TLX Type S. I’m a Honda guy so this would no doubt be a dream buy for me!!!! It’s PERFECT!!!!

    Your comment about the fuel economy didn't really make sense. The Corvette is rear wheel drive, the TLX is all-wheel drive. You use a lot of extra fuel dragging around those four wheels. I'm kind of torn between the Acura Integra and the TLX and your rant about how you'd rather have the Integra just because it had enough room and was fun to drive for less money has got me thinking……... I'm not sure which one I want now. I enjoyed the review, keep up the good work.

    I really like so much about this car (on paper). It looks very cool (your footage is excellent as always). I want it to be better than it is. The flaws get me, but I’ve not had a chance to actually try one out.

      Honestly, if the back seat were habitable for human persons, I think that would be enough to look past some of the other flaws. As it is, it's not really usable as a sedan, so it kind of erases the point.

    I have a 23!!! Love the retro!!! Speedo vs 24 but I’ll say if I wasn’t a fan of the old Speedo So much I’d dig the new tech!!!!! Especially 360 cam but the old needle flying up makes me so happy!! It’s perfectly flawed!!

    I have had this card since it came out and it’s been amazing, there are only two things I’m critical about it, fuel economy and the transmission from a start. Hit button to put it in sport and it’s better but economy gets horrid. It’s beautiful, I get looks and look back at it all the time. I have its Apex Blue, one of the best colours in my opinion. Plenty of power for 8/10ths driving 95% of the time. Also, the surround view button is on the end of the wiper stalk. Great review.

    Nice and accurate review. Picked the Integra Type S as my daily driver, even though I will rarely be using the passenger or back seat (and so I could have tolerated the TLX's back seat). Yes, the TLX is an excellent value in a luxury performance sedan, and it was quite tempting. Ultimately decided that there are many heavy, luxury performance sedans out there; but the Integra seemed more special overall--manual transmission, compact and nimble at a thousand pounds lighter, a package worthy of Road & Track's Performance Car of the Year title.

      I agree. While the Integra isn't exactly hiding the fact that it's a Civic Type R with some Banana Republic clothes, the TLX Type S feels like such a missed opportunity considering how much it gets right. The Integra Type S is more enjoyable and a bit more honest. Even though we love the TLX Type S, I think our choice has to be Integra Type S at the end of the day. It's SUCH a satisfying car in so many ways.

      @@jax1079 nice. I am older now (and older than you--empty nester). All my life, I have prioritized value. This time, I consciously decided not to. I figured if not now, then when (if ever). Yes, the TLX gives more luxury and value for your buck. But . . .

    We have a '23 TLX Type-S, love it. Back seat room isn't quite as bad as it seems in your video. At 6'6", I'd imagine almost any sedan is going to get more cramped in the back. I'm 5'7" and wife is 5'1", there is MORE than enough room in the back for any of our friends or family to fit. Sure it's not a 7-Series or S Class, but we have had nothing but compliments about rear seat comfort from those that have sat back there. It is a near perfect family sedan for our family!

    Have you had a chance to drive an is500? Currently have the integra type s but agree with your comment, tlx feels more special and wish the integra was more so.

      I have actually! Haven't had one for review but I got to autocross one at Road Atlanta. Helluva car with one of the all time great V8s, but... Interior feels like a time capsule to ten or more years ago. Super outdated now. Worth it? Maybe, but creature comforts and tech are in short supply.

      @@Supabash I do love that Lexus V8, but... I like driving a stick and still being able to carry the family (and things), so I'd probably go Integra Type S.

      I totally agree. I love driving my 2.0T Touring. Unfortunately, Honda ruined a great thing with the 2024 model Accord which looks like a boring vanilla Ford Taurus. If Acura can keep the TLX pricing in the $50K-60K range: keep the same exterior styling and colors, keep the interior colors while tweaking the dashboard layout and increase rear space, and add real "luxury" to the TLX interior (Note to Acura: Heated steering wheel and heated & cooled rear seats are now standard on competitor models) and bump that horse/torque up to 400 in the 2025 model, that would make the TLX a great choice for Honda/Acura loyalist.

      @@BLKShadow I agree. You can see in my review of the Honda Accord that I said it just might be the perfect sedan, BUT.... it has lost something of what made the Accord special. We've owned two of them, and both had that Accord DNA (2004 and 2009), but the new one seems to be missing it somewhat. Of course, as you said, the styling leaves something to be desired as well. Fingers crossed that a hot version of the Honda Accord debuts at some point to at least win back a little of the performance cred.

    How does your corvette get better gas mileage? Hard to believe the vette gets better than 22mpg ever.

      The C5 was incredibly light, and the LS1 is hardly taxed moving it in normal driving. It's easy to get mid 20s mpg in such conditions and nearly 30 mpg on the highway.

    I want to love both of the Acura Type S models but the Acura might as well rename all Type S models to Type M (M for Markup, as in dealer markup). I'm glad you called out the rear space in the TLX. That's a deal killer right there which is unfortunate because I love the design of the TLX. It's the best design Acura has had in years.

      Agree. The TLX is a stunner, but the back seat for us is a deal breaker. The days of dealer markups are at an end. Let them languish with unsold inventory until they crumble. Incredible selfish ignorance from many dealers.

    I'll admit it: I feel sorry for the Acura TLX Type S.
    Recently enough, I could make a case for the flagship sedan of Honda's U.S. luxury family. There's a turbocharged V-6 under the hood spitting out 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. The torque-vectoring "Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive" (SH-AWD) system not only does wonders at giving a front-wheel-drive platform grip, but it's also blessed with one of the best names in the automotive realm. Last fall, a 2024 model-year refresh brought improved looks (no more shiny grille window for the active cruise's radar system), better screens, and a remapped Sport+ drive mode.
    All of which was appreciated . . . but all of which was too little, too late.
    Because for all the ire that the TLX Type S has (rightly or wrongly) inspired, those who claim it inferior to machines like the BMW M340i, the existential threat to the TLX Type S sits across the showroom floor: the incredible Acura Integra Type S.
    Despite packing more power and a higher price, the TLX Type S is both smaller inside and less fun than its Integra sibling. The measuring tape tells the first tale: While the $58,195 TLX (a four-door sedan) is a couple inches larger in every exterior dimension, the $52,995 Integra (a five-door hatchback) has more headroom, more rear legroom, and nearly twice the cargo room-23.4 cubic feet versus 13.5.
    Yet in spite of its tinier interior, and though it's barely larger outside, the pricier Type S significantly outweighs the cheaper one. Car and Driver put both on the scales, uncovering that the TLX Type S weighs precisely 1000 pounds more than the Integra Type S-4212 pounds versus 3212. The TLX's added power and the grip that comes with SH-AWD mean it manages to outrun the hot Integra, but not by much; the TLX-S is about a half-second quicker in the 0-to-60-mph sprint and the quarter-mile alike, with both cars netting the same trap speed at the end of the run.
    On the street, the TLX Type S is refined and comfortable, but it doesn't involve the driver the way the Integra Type S does. None of those ponies or pound-feet go to waste thanks to all of that grip, but the car often feels reluctant to use all its power unless spurred. Left in default Normal mode, the 10-speed auto seeks out the high ground like Buford at Gettysburg, and it takes a deep stab of the gas pedal to prod it back to full potential. Extracting the most from the TLX requires making the most of that new Sport+ mode, engaged by twisting the dashboard's central rheostat. What car never seeks high gear too early? The Integra Type S, because it only comes with a delectable six-speed stick.
    Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive includes an active torque-vectoring rear axle, giving the TLX more bite in curves. Pitch the car into a cloverleaf on-ramp or other tight turn, lean on the throttle, and the car goes just a little harder than expected; the overdriven outer rear wheel pushing to cinch up the line and inspiring confidence in the driver during the process.
    Yet as impressive as SH-AWD is, there are simpler (and less heavy) ways to make a vehicle designed around sending power forward entertaining. Honda must have hired some engineers straight out of the School of Limited-Slip Helical Differentials and Wizardry, because the Civic Type R and Integra Type S drive with a neutrality, grace, and lack of torque steer that defy logic for a front-wheel-drive car. It shows in the objective facts as well as the subjective feels: the front-wheel-drive Integra outgrips the all-wheel-drive Acura with both on comparable tires, albeit by just 0.03 g.
    After a week with the TLX Type S, it was the size issues, not the driving, that clogged up my notebook. The rear seat is crippled by not only its dimensions but also by the tight footwell and the aggressive curve of the back of the front thrones. I had to apologize before, during, and after asking my in-laws, both of whom stand within a couple inches of six feet tall, to clamber into the rear bench. My mother-in-law couldn't extricate her feet without me moving the driver's seat plenty far forward.
    The front seats, delightful. The rear seats, not so much.
    And neither the rear seat nor trunk proved conducive for carrying objects. Everything from the highly sculpted seat bolsters to the gun-slit opening to the trunk conspire against such utility. Being in the midst of moving while testing the TLX, I was perturbed that I could only fit two medium-size cardboard boxes from Lowe's in the back seat and zero in the trunk. The whole affair left me longing for the TSX station wagon of yore and its far more rectilinear cargo bay.
    Yet there is plenty to like about the TLX Type S. It's handsome, with an aggressive-yet-friendly face and sculpted haunches. The front seats are wonderfully comfortable. There are hard buttons with pleasant finger-feel to control the functions adjusted most (entertainment volume to climate controls). But Acura's "True Touchpad Interface" for the other infotainment options is odd, especially since using Apple CarPlay turns it into a MacBook-style trackpad-and the ELS sound quality is among the best found in any new car at any price.
    Of course, about all those things are true of the Integra Type S as well. The Integra manages the feat of being both a better car for the rear world and a more entertaining plaything than its TLX relation. The fact that it does so while also being more affordable makes it hard to justify buying the dreadnought-class model besides front-wheel-drive phobia or a lack of commitment to the #SaveTheManuals creed.
    Indeed, the overlap between the Types S is great enough that I wonder if Acura should rethink the TLX. As much as I admire Honda's decision to build this quasi-bespoke sedan for its luxury badge in this day and age, would Acura have been better off heaping leather and sound insulation into the current Accord, then cramming SH-AWD inside-kind of along the lines of what Acura used to do with the old TL. But hey, Honda has vowed to sell only electric cars by 2040, which means we have roughly a decade and a half left of delightful gas-powered Hondas and Acuras left; there's still time for them to give the TLX a second chance.

    I have a 2021 Type S and it’s a 7/10 in my book. Design, sound system, awd system, features is good. The cons are the power, gas efficiency, reliability and value. Biggest grip with my experience is the 10 Speed automatic transmission. It’s awful. Gear hunts too much and when in sport mode.. it never puts you in the exact power band. It is a nice luxury sporty sedan that’s rare in public roads and it rides nice but they need to improve in many areas. Next year i’ll be trading it in for an Audi RS5 SportBack.     10 speed sh-awd 355hp twin turbo v6, similar formula as the gt-r. Yeah, back seats and trunk isnt as good as the integra, but who cares! Its a sports sedan. Looks more comfortable than an IS. Want more space? Who really is going to miss the few inches you get out of the hatch? Your LS gets better mpg in stop and go traffic than the tlx? Yeah i doubt that😂

      Sadly, it does. Main reason why is the lightness of the C5. With equal horsepower, the LS is moving 700-800 lbs less than the TLX. The Acura TLX is quite heavy for what it is.
