    Great memories of climbing Elk Mtn with family members. My brother and I climbed one day in the snow, came around a bend and a HUGE elk was just standing there looking at us. He was snow covered. One of those perfect moments. 👍🏻

    The views were so beautiful, you showed us some incredible rock formations, and the wildflowers were the extra bonus.

      Thank so much for the sweet message! It’s such a pretty place to explore. Where are your favorite spots out there?

      Of Course! Fun, interesting to watch. Gives me ideas where to explore next. Still so much to see before it gets too hot lol.
      Typically, it's the Narrows...however, depepending on the day/time it can get a little busy. The last several weeks it was a hike along Quanah Creek from Quanah Parker Dam down to Cat Cave (the Keyhole some call it). Started at 7:30 this morning, hiked from Post Oak/Treasure Lake up Charon's Garden to Post Oak Falls and then headed west up a long canyon going on the north side of Twin Rocks Mountain, making it over to just south of Crab Eyes and Ferryman's Traverse. Took several hours. Brutal, but gorgeous. Rarely stick to the trails for too long. Wish it was closer to Oklahoma City.

    I always end up off trail on Elk mountain too.

      It’s so easy to do there. So many paths have been made all over the refuge and the wilderness. It’s such a cool place to explore, though.

    Is this hike kid friendly? What would you rate this trail from beginner to professional? Me and wife live in oklahoma and been wanting to take our 5 year old for a hike

    • @OklahomoHiker
      @OklahomoHiker  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This one would not be great for a five year old. It’s quite a bit of elevation gain and some boulder hopping. I might suggests walking to Forty-Foot Hole (which I have a video for) or Little Baldy and see how it goes before going for something more rigorous.

    Love watching your videos before I go to ease my anxiety. What kind of shoes do you hike in?

      Awwww! That makes me happy to read. Glad it helps.
      As far as my shoes, I hike in the Altra Lone Peaks. I’ve chosen that shoe for several years now and I’ve really liked them.

    I have hiked over much of Elk Mountain,and am going back and taking a buddy April 15. There is so much to see. When I get a legit group together, I want to traverse through the Rock Rooms. The Boulder Rooms on the Charons Garden Trail are nest, but I'd like to experience the real Rock Rooms.

    • @OklahomoHiker
      @OklahomoHiker  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t know much about the Rock Rooms. Any good resources for finding out more information? It sounds like a neat adventure.

      We used to call them the Bat Caves. Just be careful. Those are the original badlands...

    • @DavidMillersuperdave
      @DavidMillersuperdave 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did you ever get more info on the rock rooms? I have GPS coordinates of the entrance. Been there a few times. Best to go in when its cold but not below freezing. Keeps snakes at bay but a little water can be standing in the caves.

    • @Wichitan
      @Wichitan 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DavidMillersuperdave What you're calling the 'Rock Rooms' are actually several VERY large single boulders that are piled up against one another, creating different 'rooms'. The boulders are the size of large houses, made out of the ever-present red granite of the Wichitas. That area is surrounded by badlands (lands that you can't get a horse through) composed of the same granite. Those lands can be very dangerous if you're not careful. If you go, take rope. And do NOT piton into that stone (it's some of the oldest weathered granite on planet Earth and should not be trusted). Oh, and don't go alone.

    • @DavidMillersuperdave
      @DavidMillersuperdave 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Wichitan I'm pretty sure we're talking about different spots. Are you referring to the rooms that are located on the SW side of Elk Mountain below Pear and Apple?

      Though I try not to depend on it solely, the AllTrails app can be helpful with that sort of thing.
