      Can I ask about the couch grass JB? I've got loads, surrounded by it both sides, and while I try to pull out the roots as best I can by digging it up, would love to go no dig. But won't it just creep back in under the surface? I'm worried that even though I'll get rid of the surface stuff as I go, over time, underneath with become a spiders Web of roots again? Nightmare stuff!!

    I'm in the same area as you and I delayed the seed sowing this year because of what has been a pretty dismal February and March in terms of weather and poor light. This was backed up by my plot neighbour who is 86 and has been on the plot for 50 years! He said, 'forget it son, wait till April, it will all catch up.....trust me'. (Being called 'son' gave me a youthful spring in my step since being 61 it's not something I hear these days!). I took over another plot right next to mine three months ago which was just a field of very deep rooted couch grass and bramble (it hadn't been worked for three years), so to be honest, I haven't minded the delay this year. It's been hammer and tongs trying to get the second plot ready!

    Weather has been so bad this year. its prob why I've been so ill so many times. Any luck it will dry up a bit soon and we will have some good days. Reusing Steves tunnel is what he would have wanted. He knew it would be utilised and looked after with you. Its much better it lives on with you than some stranger take it over and it get ruined

    Thanks for another interesting video, especially about the sylvagrow compost.
    My polytunnel I had years ago and absolutely got so much pleasure from it, especially in the rain! They came as a standard size then….14ft wide and 65 ft long! On a hot day I used to get so far in then get out rather rapidly, far too hot , too long. But now it is well ventilated as the cover is badly split, in fact now when it’s raining it’s hard to find many dry spots. I would love to get half of it recovered but there are so many brambles etc growing outside of it, that it’s a very daunting task that will probably never happen!
    So I just have to watch you enjoy yours with Steve’s vibes. Thanks

    We have quackgrass. I threw it's roots in a weed tea barrel, submerged all summer, frozen solid all winter. A few weeks ago I thought I could compost it. The #@* stuff is alive and waiting for me to lay it on the ground so it can take off again!

    JB having the poly tunnel to work in if the weather is not good allows you to carry on working on the plot OR just to get down to the plot and 'time out' a little bit of zen. Out in the fresh air but not the elements .... I do think you need a bigger flask 😁

    Wow... the RAIN!
    Funny that you call that odd-shaped bed an "L-bed"... from my perspective (especially as viewed at the end of your video) it looks like a "J-Bed"... JB!
    Re: your THERMOS... I believe I have the same one and it has a TWIST AND POUR stopper. If your stopper has a couple arrows on top of it, then you can partially untwist the stopper and pour into your cup at one of the arrow markings. That way you don't remove the whole stopper and lose heat. Your tea/coffee will stay hot much longer! 🙂
    I agree that the raised beds will be much better supported with those stabilizers on the outside of the bed, rather than the inside. If on the inside, the weight of the soil can still push outwards and, over time, possibly cause the screws to pull out from the boards.

    I always do some potatoes in tubs and always use spent compost. I mix in a handful of blood fish and bone and a handful of chicken poo pellets. They grow great as long as I stay on top of the watering. They do want a good soak every day once the tubers start forming.

    Yayyy, potato time already! ❤ Believe it or not, I may do a potato reveal video soon. 😂 My, erm… “Christmas potatoes” that I sowed last July never got harvested, so they’ve essentially been “over wintered” and I’m curious about that result. 😅 Anywhoo, this year I’m trying my hand with sweet potatoes only. Love that you experiment with variations on how you go about things every season!

    I have an old dustbin I was going to get rid of but instead I filled it with spent compost and it's been fab. When I'm planting things like bulbs in pots or anything hardy that just needs a bit of extra substrate in the bottom I dip into my spent compost bin. I also mix it with fertiliser and some perlite if I want to grow something in it. I am loving the poly tunnel, really makes me want to have one when I get a big garden.

    Totally agree that sylvagrow needs a liquid feed sooner than you would need in a peat compost. I think the temperature is a major factor in the slow growth progression from seed leaves into secondary leaves, my tomatoes were fed a few days ago and the growth is now slow but lovely sturdy seedlings. Take care.

    We chatted a bit ago on insta about things stalling in the Sylva Grow. My plants took off when I took them out of it.
    I wondered if the wet/cold summer of last year affected the balance in the composting.
    How awful was the rain?! Thank heavens for the space in the tunnel to stay productive for dry
    Greenhouse teasing… let’s guess…. staging toppers or tomatoes germinated?! 🫡🤔
    Looking forward to seeing those newly reinforced beds all ready for planting.
    I think we all have messy corners. I might start showing more of our actual garden.. shameful it is 😂😂

    • @JBNat
      @JBNat  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was the tomatoes yes!! Staging toppers is a good guess although I think I'm okay without them for now.
      It's been interesting how many other people piped up and said they've had no problems with Sylvagrow this year 🤔

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JBNat I’ve had some things grow well in it too. Tomatoes (dwarf house ones) and cape gooseberry are loving it, as are the aubergines. Maybe it’s just been a weird year for peppers.
      Tomatoes are looking fantastic! They came up pretty quickly considering they’re outside.
      So excited for this year.. I think you probably will be ok with the toppers because you’ve got the seed table.

  • @amandar7719
    @amandar7719 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    JB. I find that all seed sown in seed/multipurpose compost needs a feed. Plus, although I’ve never tried Silvagrow, most composts have become more consistent than the past three years which is, I believe, the reason folk had been recommending Silvagrow that had been comparatively more reliable.
    Yes…. I tend to give the vegetable beds and other areas a good tidy despite more tasks requiring priority. It’s like tackling owning up to one’s deficiencies that have been ignored.
    I’m delighted to have removed the chitting potatoes from my window sills into the beds today. Shocked that despite all the rain this autumn/winter/spring, the beds were almost hydrophobic under the winter tarp. 😬.
    Your beds are coming along beautifully. I’d keep the large bed… easier to net or for in-ground potatoes.
    Some of our shorter, containable grasses are already going to seed. Incredibly early! Thought of you and hay fever. Windy, rainy weather keeping the pollen count at bay?

    • @JBNat
      @JBNat  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Pollen hasn't been too bad this year and I'm trying a new nasal spray which might be helping a lot. Have an appointment at the allergy clinic this week so fingers crossed!
      Did you see the vid on the sylvagrow factory tour? Was so fascinating but in my vid on that I was definitely praising the consistency. Was cool to learn more about their ingredients on site.
      I think your soil surface will probably sort itself out soon enough because the ground itself is likely plenty saturated ☺️

    • @amandar7719
      @amandar7719 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JBNat That’s great news about the new nasal spray. It’s understandable that some folk are wary of big pharma meds but it’s important to be able to live life when young and we all do better if our bodies aren’t constantly in an inflammatory state. Fingers crossed here too for a positive outcome at the allergy clinic.
