The Smriti Van Earthquake Museum is a museum located in Bhuj, Gujarat, India. It was established to commemorate the devastating earthquake that struck the region on January 26, 2001. The earthquake, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, caused widespread destruction, claiming thousands of lives and leaving many homeless. The museum serves as a memorial to the earthquake victims and aims to educate visitors about the seismic events that occurred and their impact on the region. It houses artifacts, photographs, and displays that depict the aftermath of the earthquake, including collapsed buildings, rescue efforts, and the rebuilding process.
Through its exhibits, the museum also raises awareness about earthquake preparedness, safety measures, and the importance of disaster management. Visitors can learn about the geological factors that contribute to earthquakes and understand how communities can mitigate risks and respond effectively to such disasters. The Smriti Van Earthquake Museum serves as a reminder of the resilience of the people of Bhuj and the surrounding areas in the face of adversity. It plays a crucial role in preserving the memory of the earthquake and its significance in the history of the region. The Honorable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, inaugurated Smritivan, a memorial park museum, on August 28, 2022. This project extends homage to the almost 13,000 victims of the massive Gujarat earthquake of 2001. Located a top Bhujia Hill in the State of Gujarat, the memorial spans an impressive 170 acres on the historically significant Bhujiyo Dungar.
