Electric Dog Feeder - Arduino Countermeasure to Lying Dog

  • Our wall-mounted dog feeder stores lots of food and dispenses just the right amount at dinner time with just a pull of a lever. Then an Arduino-driven clock automatically displays how long it has been since that last feeding, in case the dog tries any "you didn't feed me yet" shenanigans. So yes, we built this whole thing to deal with our lying dog.

    I was so happy when you put the plugs into the PVC, I thought that was going to be an oversight, great video, cool build

      Thanks! It was almost an oversight until I tested it and discovered the food could go sideways as well as down. Kind of obvious in hindsight but I'm glad I found the problem before I finished the build!

    One big flaw here.... It only detects the feeding event after you've pulled the crank... it requires that the operator pay attention to what the LCD says, and you've got to get the dispensed food back into the feeder if the feeder says no. As clever as this is, in its current incarnation it would have been easier to have the Arduino completely decoupled from the mechanics, existing as a simple "push button to see if it's OK to feed the dog" sort of thing. Maybe use something like a solenoid to prevent actuation of the handle (or to prevent the handle from actuating the dispensing trough) until the required time has elapsed?

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The LCD stays on with the latest feed data even though the backlight is turned off, so you know just by looking at it whether it is time to feed. But I get your point, a pushbutton to illuminate the display would be a nice addition. I also like the solenoid idea. This feeder is a prototype and we are going to build an improved version to use closer to the feed bowl, and hide it in a large piece of wall art. Still designing that and your ideas will certainly improve our thinking!

    this is awesome! did you ever make another one for inside the kitchen? if I could make one of these that feeds two dogs and is smart home enabled (alexa mostly) that would be so perfect for our home

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not yet! We are thinking of adding it to a large motel sign we are building for the kitchen. Not sure yet.

    Great video, really cool project! Have you thought about adding something to block the lever from being pulled before a certain amount of time has passed? Your dog seems pretty smart...maybe too smart.

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That could be a problem but fortunately the dog is too short to reach the lever.

  • @RoyatAvalonFarms

    This is a very cool project. Would you be able to design and demonstrate a similar feeder which is automatic? I'm needing such an application for a poultry feeder which dispenses feed once or twice per day and would love to build something reasonable inexpensive. Thanks for the consideration.

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would certainly be possible but we aren't sure about making it automatic in a food dispenser. We'd be concerned about over feeding, but with adjustments it could be made to work. It would be a great labor saver though!

    I like the simplicity of this design. Does food get caught much, either locking it up or making the mechanism difficult to rotate? I've attempted several servo, self-feed designs that weren't trustworthy.

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We haven't had any problems. In practice the rotating tube crushes any food that would otherwise jam it, and the fit is close enough that there is no leakage.

  • @JavaJack59
    @JavaJack59 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sweet. Next step: alerting you when it's time to refill the hopper. Or just have one of the sides be acrylic :)

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great idea! The Arduino can do so much more and we may add that in the future.

    • @JavaJack59
      @JavaJack59 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AtomicDairy I guess you could do it with a bunch of optical sensors that would gain clear line of sight to the far side as the hopper empties, but they'd be prone to fouling with crumbs and stuff. Maybe something like a toilet tank float, but you'd have to pull it back up with a string during refill, which is kind of a nuisance.

    • @ianjones5841
      @ianjones5841 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Atomic Dairy how about an optical or ultrasonic sensor in the lid looking down which reads the level of the food? It could notify you of the need to refill then?

    My cat isn't so much hungry, as he likes to be given food. So I feed him less, but more often. Net decrease in food consumption and he thinks he's getting over on the system. I hope your next step includes a servo to turn the handle!

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We've thought about automating it and then watched Back To The Future where Einstein's food piled up. So for now we want to keep a human in the loop.

    I did one of those 10 years ago and the bugs found it and made a huge mess.

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We're looking at that. The next version will be sealed at both ends. Not sure how just yet but that's the plan.

  • @thektmtiger
    @thektmtiger 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    If you cut out half the pipe diameter it's going to drop extra food when you rotate the pipe, right? Did you address that problem on a later design?

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We found it just falls out with the rest of the food. There is probably a cleaner way to handle it but this version works for us.

    • @thektmtiger
      @thektmtiger 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AtomicDairy yea I was thinking if the portion got to big if to much extra food would drop when you rotate it

  • @EnergeticWaves
    @EnergeticWaves 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    get a servo motor and have it drop a load every day. or set it to trickle out food all day long.

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We may do that with the ultimate version. We're thinking of two smaller meals a day but we're still testing ideas.

    Not automated thumbs down.

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  ปีที่แล้ว

      We thought about that but then thought about Doc Brown's automated feeder for Einstein. Remember how Marty saw that it kept feeding even though no one was there? We came to the same conclusion Marty did and kept a person in the loop for feeding. But in all seriousness, that was exactly our thought process on this one.

      @@AtomicDairy You dont need an arduino to do this all you need is a calender and a marker next to it.
