Decoding History: In Search of the Real Jesus | Parable

  • The stories of Jesus Christ largely derive from the gospel: his miracles, resurrections and teachings all are quoted from the Bible. But what can history tell us about this legendary figure? The first century historian, Flavius Josephus, is the most frequently quoted scholar when it comes to the history of Jesus' time. His descriptions of historic events give us a clearer picture of Roman times. But are these historical accounts truly an accurate picture?

@@hrmn4694 Former History teacher here, and also spent two summers studying archeology in Cyprus at a site mentioned several times in the New Testament (Acts): Actually, there are parts of Josephus' writings that are clear and obvious forgeries (change in writing cadence, verbiage, obvious bias, etc. For instance, pertaining to Jesus, Josephus barely mentions him except for basically saying he is a teacher who "claims" to be the Christ, whereas the obvious forgery of Josephus' writing(s) says that Jesus "is" the Christ. Josephus would NEVER have said that!! He was commissioned by Rome to simply chronicle the history of the Jews, not offer opinions, and had he written a statement like that, it would have cost him his life! Clearly then, a Christian writer added that later). However, by and large, both religious and secular scholars still regard Josephus as the premier source of that time. Point of fact, specifications that he mentioned about Masada (but hadn't been found and by which people used to dismiss him), have in fact within the past two decades been excavated and found to be exactly as he described!

None of those have actual references to Jesus. Some refer to Christians but nothing specifically about Jesus. One mentions Christ but not “Christ” as in a god. It’s referring to a good person. There is evidence for John the Baptist but not Jesus. Most of those sources are written after the gospels and some based off them. So it’s circular to use them as a source. You can’t prove the Bible using the Bible.

I am not certain, but I think that this passage was edited later on during the Council of Nicaea under Constantines authority with a few powerful bishops. There was so much confusion at that time amongst Christians and that council really solidified and gave way for the Catholic church to spread. There is so much conradiction in the Bible, specifically the new testament and they needed to add extra layers of authority from history to justify their claims about a man that nobody writing the bible has ever met. Wild shit.

It's common to find unverifiable stories from antiquity. If we " believe " ( from the word " lief " which means " to wish") in just any old thing, we're justifiably accused of being credulous and naive, but if we question the most common beliefs in the society in which we were born and still live, we're condemned and ridiculed. I advocate actively researching and questioning everything for one's self, while respecting other's right to believe in whatever they wish. Myths were the language of the ancient world that conveyed larger truths by means of the fictive: literature, myths and legends.

Everything I've seen outside of Josephus is various people in the late 1st and up to the 4th centuries mentioning Jesus and they all said they "heard" this. I believe there were several Jesus figures back then who were preaching love so how do you know which one they're talking about? The show notes that some of these sightings were reported 60 years after but it was much longer, like 100-400 years AD. The Catholic Church has benefitted in innumerable ways, and forced people to pray the way they wanted them to, because of the way the Bible was written. The Pope said you couldn't get to heaven unless you did it the Catholic way. I don't doubt that the Italians took the original Bible (it's probably in the Vatican) and rewrote it. We have no traceable idea who wrote the 14 original books that were supposedly not included in the Bible or who wrote the passages that were deemed worthy by the Catholic Church. We have a pretty good idea that Moses must have written Exodus and Deuteronomy. But the Bible has been translated, edited and modified for 2000 years. If true miracles were being performed, if someone had been raised from the dead, I think hundreds of people would have written something down (yes, they could write) or sent a letter or clay tablet to their relatives or friends telling them about it. But something like this has never been found.

Jesus is not his real name. JESUS is romanized word of Hebrew Letters יהשוה. John (or) Jehohanan is real name. See in Link ( en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jehohanan )
John or Jehohanan is mistakenly known as Jesus, Who is preacher a Noahide Laws to Gentiles, Then what is Noahide Law. The 7 Laws of Noahide should follow by the Gentiles to get salvation and to Enter in the Kingdom of God in this world. Jews are chosen people of God. They should follow 613 Commandments according to Torah for their salvation and to get in God's Kingdom. Soon God's kingdom is going to Establish in this world by Messiah/Christ that Era is known as Messanic Era (The Era of Peace) King Herod want to kill Jehohanan known as Jesus because of political Situation. This man is crucified in Roman control Israel. It is accounted by Jewish historian Josephus. Then how he got the name JESUS, Jews mentioned their God name in four letter tetragrammaton יהוה YHWH when this man (JEHOHANAN) Know as Jesus came to preach the 7 laws of Noah to Greeks and romans in Israel.Jews mistakely thought he is preach Jewish doctrine to non Jews.
He came for salvation to Gentiles through 7 Noahide Laws.
Shin letter is made of 4 Yuds and 3 Vavs has numerical value 58. Number 58 is also numerical value of Noah / Grace. Noah and Grace are mirror letters in Hebrew(נח) Noah (Noach) (חנ) (Chen means Grace in Hebrew) Grace. So Hebrew letter ש is put in the middle of Hashem. we got YHSWH/יהשוה is not pronunciable for general reading. To make it readable one Sounds of יהשוה of Hebrew letter form is taken in account. YAHSHUA is for formed.Later it is most romanized as JESUS.

There is no jesus as the letter j is a relatively new letter. Thus it is a different name and person altogether. Before j he was iesus and iesous in Latin and Greek which is from the Aramaic Yashua/Yeshua. Ultimately as the Abaryth/Hebrew Messiah, the Son of Daud/David, from the clan of Yahudah, he was born with the name Yahusha 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 which Declares that YAHUAH 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 Saves!
“O Righteous Father, indeed the world did not know You, but I Knew You, and these knew that You Sent Me.
“And I have made Your Name Known to them, and shall make It Known, so that the Love with which You Loved Me might be in them, and I in them.”

If Jesus died for our sins, what happened to all of the sinners before Jesus came along? Did everyone just end up going to hell?
The Bible says no one can take the punishment for someone else’s sin. How did Jesus die to save sinners with this being said?
    Deuteronomy 24:16
Parents are not to be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.
We are not born into sin and are not guilty of sins of their fathers or Adams transgressions- Deu. 24:16, 2 Chron. 25:4
I find a contradiction when Christians say ''You're born a sinner' yet another verse states ''we are fearfully and wonderfully made''??
Many Christian religions believe that we are born in sin due to “Adams Transgression” yet though this is a common belief someone else’s choices cannot make you a sinner. When one is born they are without sin. We learn this in Moroni 8:10-21
"If someone else causes to murderer another person does that make me a murderer"?
Death, not torment in a fiery hell, is the penalty for sin. “He who has died has been acquitted from his sin.”-Romans 6:7.
"Death is sin. Romans 6:23. Yet not all deaths lead to sin and not all sins leads to death".
"Do you believe you are a Sinner in the hands of a angry God?".
There's a problem with the nar·ra·tive theory of the conceptive teachings found when it comes to the thought of original Sin debts for all of humanity". Jeremiah 31:34.

He wasn’t born on 25 December and no date is given anywhere. It was impossible for the Magi and shepherds to have been there on the same night e.g. the Magi followed a star that only appeared upon his birth. The two gospel accounts of his birth conflict - how? The only witnesses were his parents. Who delivered him?
The Basilica of the Nativity was apparently built on the site of the stable. How did they know over 35 years later, where he was born? It would have been developed. Downstairs you can kiss the exact spot where was born……how can they prove that?!
The four Gospels were not written by the names given to them and written forty or fifty years after his supposed death. Why take so long to record such a famous person?
Emperor Constantine created Christianity by issuing an Edict of Milan in 313 and proclaimed himself to be one. It was created to subdue great civil unrest to give the Jews somebody to believe in.
There are other examples of the story we are given that just don’t make sense.

I mean those who go into their pray closets a meet with their Lord and Savior, and his very presence is truly realized. these people here believe so highly that if someone put a gun to their head they would rather die then deny the one who has saved their soul from every lasting death. It's too bad though that Christianity in America as a whole is a joke, and needs a new reformation.

To understand the stories of Jesus, one has to understand the writer and the time he lived in. Those who contributed to the story of Jesus were the same people who wanted to restrict access to the bible for the common people. They regarded Jesus and his followers as “SINNERS.” Thus he gave his life for the sins of man. Though it’s highly likely that most people were sinners....it’s definitely not what Jesus died for....He died so that those who seek truth and righteousness can live. He was probably the first major leader of the protestant movement.

The oldest manuscript we have for Josephus is from the 11th century, making it extremely likely that Christian scholars/monks added in the reference to Jesus in later copies of the book. I think the confusion here, and hence the agree vs. disagree, is because if you re-read the original post and replies, there are fundamentally *two* questions being asked, and herein, I agree with both parties. Thus, the questions are: 1) "Does it matter if Jesus existed or not in order for the Gospel(s) to carry a good message?" To this I agree with Ruben and say, "No. A solid teaching is a solid teaching. Period." Question 2) Lynda's reply slips in the additional theme of salvation (which Ruben never mentioned), and asserts that Jesus is "the one who saves your soul." With this I also concur, therein agreeing with both parties who might otherwise look at odds until you take a step back and see that the original post was only addressing "if Jesus had to exist in order for His teachings to be meaningful," whilst Lynda brought in salvation by which the Bible teaches that Christ is, "the way, the truth and the light." As an extra side-note, I do have to deviate a bit on my second agreement and concede that I believe that we will see people from other faiths on the other side of heaven's gate because even though they might not have professed Christ as their "Savior," there could have been any number of mitigating circumstances why this might have been (the famous question posed here of course is always, "What about the people who died without ever hearing the Gospel?). To this end, I would like to think that the Lord is rooting for more people to join in paradise than not, and as it is *He* who will stand as judge, as always, let our first and greatest task be to love each other as commanded. Blessings to you all!

"nearly all historians...accept that a human Jesus existed...."
    from Wikipedia
    Historicity of Jesus
The question of the historicity of Jesus is part of the study of the historical Jesus as undertaken in the quest for the historical Jesus and the scholarly reconstructions of the life of Jesus. While the Christ myth theory proposes that Jesus never existed, nearly all historians reject the Christ myth theory and accept that a human Jesus existed...."

I'm halfway through the show and sobfsr I have not heard any mention of the fact that most scholars now recognise the testimonium Flavianum as a later interpolation by a Christian scribe. I am certain at least Steve Mason would have told you this. Let's hope you get to that later in the episode, but honestly all this talk about whether Josephus is reliable is irrelevant if that one tiny passage was added centuries later.
PS finally, we get to this in the nineteenth minute! Glad you included Steve Mason's analysis, but he is not telling you this is "controversial" as you say, he is telling you that Josephus didn't write it.
