Deadlifts are KILLING Your Gains (OH SH*T!)

- The deadlift is one of the most fundamental exercises you can include in any strength program, but is it killing your gains? In this video, I react to the recent interview Robert Oberst did with Joe Rogan on the JRE podcast in which the world champion strongman stated that unless you were a competitive deadlifted, you should avoid the movement all together in your workouts because the risk reward ratio is not worth the potential injury particularly if you are a professional athlete.

I think it’s fair to start by saying that I have been known to bury a few bad exercises in my iron graveyard. Specifically, I believe that the upright row and behind the neck shoulder press are two of the worst exercises you could ever include in your workouts and should be avoided at all costs. Not only are they highly likely to lead to injury but there are superior alternatives that nullify even doing them in the first place.
That said, the deadlift is not one of those exercises that I would suggest not doing. I believe it is one of the most fundamental movement patterns for not just our training plans but for every day life. The need to perform it correctly however is magnified due to the fact that the loads capable of being lifted on this exercise exceed what may be able to be done on any other single exercise.
I do think it’s helpful to apply some context to what Robert is saying however. He is coming from an experience set that demanded he lift as much as he possibly could in order to win whatever competition he was competing in. The difference between first and second place could come down to lifting a weight or not. If a compromise in form was needed to do that, so be it. The end result however was that along with some titles came some unwanted body breakdown that could lead to regrets down the road.
The comments made about the reality of pro sports weight rooms are very true. I can tell you having spent a great deal of time in professional sports training athletes that these guys are not often the best lifters. They got to where they are because of their incredible innate talents and physical gifts. Often times, they learned poor lifting technique at an early age and their ability to compensate through it makes it difficult to spot as they make their way up through college and to the pros.
Forcing these athletes to perform lifts that are supposed to be good for them when their bodies may not be prepared for them properly, could lead to repercussions that could cost them their careers and the purpose of why they are where they are in the first place. This is especially true when you realize that there are other exercises like the power clean and hang clean that can give a training effect with fewer side effects if they are dealing with deadlifting limitations.
This all underscores the importance of redefining what strength really is. It is not simply adding more and more plates to the ends of the bar. Instead, it is realizing that strength is founded on stability. The ability to keep your body free from compensation and lift a weight as mechanically intended without subjecting areas of the body to stresses they shouldn’t normally incur. This doesn’t always manifest itself as blatantly bad form. As discussed in the video, it can be a lot less obvious.
The bottom line is, the deadlift is an important exercise that I believe should not be avoided. It should be learned and learned early however. Absolutely. I got great gains on deadlifts using what would be a 10 rep max for only 8 reps. Other than warm ups, just one set per week, an 8 rep set, 2 reps shy of failure. I slowly moved the poundage up only when that 8th rep still felt strong. Never had a lower back issue. Basically, guys gotta stop doing heavy singles and triples in deadlifts unless they're competing.

I wholeheartedly agree with your assertions here and offer my testimony to the deadlift. When done responsibly and smartly, this exercise can be the key to a strong core. 25 years ago I suffered chronic lower back pain - each morning I woke up with pain so bad I could hardly breathe. I started deadlifting, very light at first (135 for 10 reps), and slowly added weight over time to remain within a 12-15 rep range. Within 6 weeks my back pain disappeared, and I have never suffered with it since. Deadlifts became my core power exercise and I eventually was able to lift 455 for 4 solid reps then finish off with 365 for 10 reps. At 48 years old, I'm not afforded the regularity I would like in my training due to my career, but I still use the deadlift as my core power exercise, and it supercharges my workout which is typically followed up with chest or shoulders and abs. As you mentioned, context is key! I recommend everybody learn how to deadlift properly and incorporate this key core strength exercise into a regular routine.
135 is very light with bad chronic back pain???
@@metamaetalol there are always people saying they started off at 135 for ANYTHING and think it's light. When i started working out i could bench press 70 pounds. my deadlift would probably be about the same. curling 15 pound dumbells. this is what normal people start with

If a video could be sanctified this video should be made a saint. I'm 51, 6'2" and in the last 5 months through VERY careful deadlifts I've fixed my low back pain and stability issues 100%. 20 years of back pain gone as if it was never there. In my case apparently I had major movement pattern problems - the nerve issues started with that - wrong way of moving. My work is in tight spaces and bent over or on my knees. A few hours of that an most people will develop low back issues anyway.
What I did in the gym the last 5 months is 1 hour long sessions of deadlift singles - every 1-3 minutes, depending on when my pulse slows down. The stress is on form and especially BRACING. The prolonged workout does wonders. Your body learns to move properly and it seems to not "forget" when you walk out of the gym. 8 months ago I could not walk, drive, or lay down normally for 3 whole months - the low back pain had flared. Getting in bed took full 5 min - screaming and in very slow motion. Same with getting out of bed. I had started to think that I'd be crippled for life.
Thing is - if you can actually sustain consistent gym visits (no injury to stop you) just deadlifts make you grow like crazy. I'm completely natural (only medicine I take is a low dose thyroid med) and I've had a low carb diet the last 3 months. About 10 days ago I was shocked to see that my old knee pads do not fit any more - my quads had grown in the last 3 months! I could not lock the knee pads at all - my legs were just way bigger than a few months ago! Same goes for chest and back. Back is directly stimulated by the deadlift but the chest probably grows because of the massive release of hormones that the deadlift causes + speed benching with very light weight for 1 hour with 2-3 min rest between sets. Once again - it all hinges on being able to go to the gym week after week (I deadlift once a week). It is truly impressive to make visible progress doing mainly dealifts, being 51, natural, working physical work long hours, and being tall. If anything should be said it is this: The mindset is #1, before everything else. Exactly as Jeff says - you need to know WHY you are deadlifting. Also because at the end of the day nobody gives a flying shit how much you deadlift.
Well done sir 👏🏻 how are things now at 55? Back pain still gone I hope.
@@alansmith4655 Never a problem. Today I drove 150 miles. Sitting is the worst for low back pain. And did 9 jobs requiring extensive squatting, bending, being on my knees, weird half bend postures leaning to one side, carrying weird shaped heavy equopment... You get the idea. Zero low back back pain.
If anything - I believe the abs just like any other muscle need to be trained to activate without you thinking about it. Recently I actually learned to use my back muscles and whatever upper back discomfort I ever had is all gone. I suggest you watch the videos of a bodybuilder mountaindog1. There are many lessons how to learn to activate all kinds of muscles. Pure gold content.
Good luck.

Jeff you are by far my favorite coach and Industry professional ... and this is a brilliant episode. I do feel the OPT Model is the underlying basis of content. The Optimal Performance Training model completely lives on that premise. STABILIZATION is the foundation of all exercise; lifting, cardio, flexibility ... and all CPT graduates live in that body of information.
Being a truck driver is killing my gains 😢
👊MAN!
You need to be a truck lifter.
Just do hummingbirds and be incredibly tense AT ALL TIMES.

@@Broxine a very important point. He even won an arm wrestling competition in Vegas to win back his son

Jeff: Yes

Very informative again jeff! Thanks!
Hey Jeff, I know this is a little bit off topic from this video but I have an important question. Do you think you can make a program designed specifically for physical therapy. I have shoulder problems, tight hips, glutes, I have gotten stress fractures in my shins in the past and I hurt all over. I am only 18 so people always wonder why I am having joint pain all over this young. I have learned several modalities and stretches and recovery exercises including the ones you have on this TH-cam Channel to help prevent injuries and recover from them. I am currently on week 11 of A-X 1 and I love the way the exercises are shown in videos. I think it would be amazing if you made a program using the same method with you doing the P.T exercises and showing how to do the modalities and stretches in a certain order. If you cannot make a whole program doing this, can you at least add onto A-X 1 and possibly other programs these type of recovery routines for the off days made specifically to recover from the workouts we did that week.
"I love what you have done with Athlean X, it has truly changed my life and made it possible for me to release a lot of mental pain and focus on nothing but lifting those weights the right way, 48 seconds per set just like you taught me. Thanks for everything Jeff, you have inspired me to never let go of going to the gym and working my ass off! Lifting hurts but I love it at the same time, it is one of the greatest feelings I have had. I am seeing major gains and my motivation has increased by 10 fold."
If you see this, maybe you can make a video about making this type of program. If you'd like, you can use what I said above on your Athlean X testimonials.
Jeff, your doing something for the public good, and I respect you immensely. I wish nothing but health, wealth, and prosperity for you.

As always Jeff is on top of his game. Context matters just like stability
Hey Jeff. Hopefully you see this question and have time to respond. Im 57, have had 3 knee surgeries, and ride enduro motorcycles. I drop the bike often and have to pick it up by having my butt on the seat, grabbing what I can, and lift. This is sorta a deadlift but weight behind as opposed to in front. I have adopted this form of deadlift, weight behind ankles, into my routine. I use lighter weight, 100#, and more reps.
My question is do you think this lift is good and safe for this old man? I have noticed less strain in my lower back and this form seems to focus more on my quads and glutes.
Thanks!
Bro I am literally watching Joe Rogan and Robert Erst saying you shouldn't do Deadlfts and then Jeff uploads this

I think I have that same instability issue that you mentioned, Jeff. After deadlifting a few times I start to get the same kind of hip pain. Do you have any videos on improving your stability for that specific problem bc I’ve been itching to start pulling weight off the ground again mann

I never was into lifting and I personally hate the fitness culture and fitness videos but your videos are so honest and so full of knowledge, i love them! They don’t make me as a beginner feel like a loser but like I’m able to reach my goals, the right way, without injuries or anything. Thanks for your vids, please keep those going. Brilliant work!!!
First and only injury I’ve had has been from the deadlift... slipped disc and was out for a month, it was a lesson in respecting that lift and learning it properly.
I had exactly the same man.. But my disc bothered me for a long time.. So I got mobility back in my hips.. And now I deadlift with half the weight I used to but perfecting the form!
Master Chief best to switch to hex bar deadlift honestly
I saw that Joe Rogan Podcast clip yesterday, and I was perplexed by that deadlift statement. Glad that Jeff shed some light on the matter.
Video liked.
Oberst probably has the worst deadlift amongst pro lvl strongman, I‘m not surprised that he said that lol
@@ipsojure2137 "worst deadlift amongst pro lvl strongman" as he pulls 880.... Oberst is no where near the worst deadlifter on the main finals circuit in strongman. Is he Shaw/Thor? No. But hes far from the worst. Oberst is mid tier on the deadlift much like hes mid tier on all strongman finals events when he competes vs the likes of Shaw/ Thor or in the past Big Z/Shaw/Eddie

Jack Breh he is nowhere near 880 on a standard bar. Maybe 800.
I've been doing deadlifts for two years. It took me a few tries to get the form down pat, but once I did I've massively improved my posture since.
I'm older and I do deadlifts for overall strength building...but I do them correctly and never get injured.
A great presentation and discussion.
Jeff, when I see video titles like this... you make me watch because I just gotta see your argument >.

Altigue Everytime I turn around he think every exercise is killing your gains. He got a nigga confused asf
At age 61 I started training to compete in senior masters track sprint events. I came across a strength protocol for sprinters created by Barry Ross a well-respected trainer for many amateurs and professional athletes including Alyson Felix fastest woman in the world. At the center of the protocol was the deadlift done heavy (85-95% of 1RM) 4x3 sets reps with a maximum of 8 seconds under load for each set, then rest for five minutes. Barry tested ground forces produced by those who used his protocol and found that they produced more ground force than other lifting protocols which backed the Mass Specific Force model used by Dr. Peter Weyand to predict speed based on the amount of force applied to the ground in a quick manner relative to the mass of the athlete. Long story short if you want to be the fastest runner possible start with heavy deadlifts to get the needed strength to apply force and defeat gravity. I'm 73 now and still deadlifting and sprinting. A Super Deadlift bar or a Hex bar can be gentler on the back too, and just as effective.
How tall are you, how much do you weigh? And how much is your max deadlift?
@@HurricaneHugues I am 5'8", 150 lb, max deadlift 400 lb. @ age 64.
