i-Teach-u Fitting a Double Hinge - Technical & fascinating Double Hinge

  • This video gives a great deal of detail to those trying to fit a double hinge to one of their doors. (It is boring for everyone else and they should not watch it.) When I bought a double hinge it cost me £25.50 and had only three lines of instructions. When I first looked at it I wasn't sure whether it was backwards, forwards or upside-down. Before you fit your double hinge just watch this video and it will give you all the information you need to do it both properly and successfully. The instructions here are total instructions included on 10cm x 7cm set of instructions sheet in 4 languages. Very Important 1. Before installation lubrify with oil or grease in oil holes. 2 Tensioning of Double Action hinges. Tension Ring. 3 Tension lever. 4. Locking pin. 5. For safety, during mounting use protection glasses.
    I have written to the makers IBFM and suggested that they put more instructions on their sheet or issue a video.
    Obviously once I had got the hinges in place then I tidied up the wood around it.
    Note: If you wish to see how the door works with the double-hinge then have a look at the second video called "Part Two of i-Teach-u Fitting a Double Hinge." by JackBarnett21

    Yep agree with other comments. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to put this together and upload. Much appreciated. I've seen PDFs covering instructions on altering tension but nothing on actually putting the hinge up in the first place. No comment. Mike

    Thank you for your comment Wayne7285 - I am a University Senior Lecturer who wanted to put a Double Hinge in between a hallway and a dining room area. I found no instructions on to how to fit the thing and so had to use my own initiative. Obviously if you compare my work with that of most tradesmen or tradeswomen then I would be considered a 'butcher' as you say. My apologies for my shortcomings. Thank you for the comment. Jack.

    Is there a type of hinge that is similar to this but that doesn't show part of the hinge? I'm needing a 2 way foldable portable wall (one side white, one side black) and both sides need to be seamless so that when it is fully open/extended you don't see any metal on either side. Is there such a thing?

    • @JackBarnett21
      @JackBarnett21  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for asking but I think you should gfo to a specialist hinge shop. When I bought this hinge there were instructions in seven languages on a leaflet the size of a fisherman's friend package. That is why I worked out what to do and wrote these instructions in the first place. The very nature of this hinge is that it will show. best wishes JackBarnett21

    Thank you, that was quite helpful. :)
    PS: Jack instead of using WD40 on the hinges, try a drop or two of light machine oil (sewing machine oil perhaps). WD40 is really more of a penetrating water displacement product, it isn't good for long term lubrication but a drop or two of light machine oil will probably last years.

  • @JackBarnett21

    I thought that you could see it - when I worked on this first of all - what I found was that there was NO information from anyone as to how to put this thing on your door. I mean - I bought it from the shop and there were no instructions. So I worked out what to do and then make these instructions for anyone else as I went along. It is most successful and I must use it at least twenty times a day. Good luck. JackBarnett21

      You should not have to cut into the wood for the tension towers. They sit flat. You have these installed wrong. I just did a set of these today. I did not cut any holes in the wood. You should update your video before everyone installs them like you did. Or decides not to get them for an install because they think you need to cut holes in the wood for the tension towers to sit in when you don't do it that way.

  • @JackBarnett21

    The door swings backwards and forwards with great ease. I put it in some year or so ago and it is still working very well. Occasionally I need to put some WD40 on it to keep it smooth but otherwise it runs very easily. Many apologies for not putting in a good couple of shots of the door moving. JackBarnett21

    I can’t seem to understand it and I’m crying because I’m frustrated. My hinges came from Home Depot with stickers on them to say what goes on what but it doesn’t seem right. I’m doing swinging doors so one side will be upside down no? And I can’t seem to understand which part of the hinge is for the front versus the back. Like do I have it backwards or something 😞😢

    • @JackBarnett21
      @JackBarnett21  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hold your hinges in your hand. Watch the video and follow the steps on your door. The essential thing is to remove the door stop. Then next to cut the piece from the door frame so that the hinge sits into the door frame. When you have done this with both hinges then attach the door to the hinges. But watch the video with one of the hinges in your hand. Best wishes JackBarnett21.

    Hi, thanks for the video. We have fitted on a 3ft garden gate to help with mother in law when carry items. The gate is tilting from top when opening so scraps on far edge bottom. Is it because the gate is too heavy or have we done something wrong?

    • @JackBarnett21

      Make sure the post holding the hinge is absolutely vertical. Strengthen it so that it remains horizontal. It shouldn't really touch the other gate other than with a click latch, otherwise it is not going to be able to open both ways.

      +Mike Wilson I would think if the hinge that you got was waterproof then it would work outside. There is no reason why it should not. When you go to buy the hinge then ask the shopkeeper or salesman if the hinge you are buying is waterproof. After that you have to make sure that your fittings are waterproof too. Please don't be sorry. Your reason for working is carpentry. You are a trained carpenter and I am sure do an excellent job. My job is knowledge management. I am concerned with understanding the problem. The problem was to understand how a double hinge worked given that the instructions that came with this piece of equipment were in seven languages but came in total to the size of a postage stamp. I am sure if I were that concerned about the woodwork I would have done a slightly better job. But it would take years to improve the quality of my woodwork. I apologise for the woodwork but the double hinge is explained perfectly.

    Completely incorrect instruction. With two way hinges a hanging strip needs to be fitted, much like a door stop on the hinge side, you can’t fit these straight on to the door liner hence the mess you made recessing the barrels into the frame, also by recessing it’s almost impossible to adjust the spring loading system.

      Thank you for your kind remark. My subject is 'Knowledge Management' and this video has spread knowledge to half a million people. What has your comment added to? I don't claim to be the world's best woodworker. If you read the other comments then you will see where this venture started. How have you helped to further knowledge? jackbarnett21

      Thank you for your comment. As a university lecturer I was more concerned about the working of the double hinge. I am sure I could have done more to make the door more attractive when I had finished.

      Honestly you would think this guy is an academic looking at the way to make a double hinge work instead of an actual craftsman worrying about how it looks. Oh yes with two masters degrees and two ordinary degrees you may be right! JackBarnett21

      JackBarnett21 what?!? What does that even mean ?!? I’m saying you butchered up the door jamb and it looks awful. You could easily could made it functional without carving out wood like an animal. I’d be embarrassed to put that work on the Internet

    Why on earth do people pretend like they're qualified to teach others how to do a something when they have obviously never done it before themselves. I don't want to be mean, but the title of your video implies that you are a teacher and you know what you're doing. It is a huge misrepresentation or as my Grandma used to say, "A big fucking lie!" You know it and I know it, as does everybody else who has ever done any of this kind of work! So who is left? I'll tell you who is left, the poor inexperienced guy who follows your instructions, and consequently butchers up their own house. Then they end up paying tons of money to get it fixed because there is no way in hell that their wives are ever going to shut up about how terrible it looks. You would re-title this video with something more appropriate if you have a conscience! The ball is in your court, Jack Barnett.

      The good thing about this video is that it puts some knowledge into the frame. Yes you are right I am a well qualified teacher, having two masters degrees and a BA and a distinction at a teacher's training college certificate. But yes I was the first one to find a double hinge and put it on TH-cam. It had a piece of paper the size of three stamps and all the instructions on it were in three languages at least. But thank you for your good words. I am sure you are well qualified to find something with few instructions and make them clearer.
      Best wishes to you for the future. If there are any other of my 1700 films you would like to give me your opinion of I would welcome you deep insights.

      I am a university senior lecturer who wanted to put up a double plug with no instructions given. As to the roughness of certain features of badgers you sound like quite an expert! Thanks for the comment. Good luck.

      +Chris Trivett Sadly I think you are right Chris. It is okay working out how things work but I lack the real skills that a genuine carpenter would have. Many apologies for the roughness of the work. Jack

      When he got the original with all the explanations on a sheet the size of three postage stamps he tried to put more of an explanation in there. You just can't get the right balance can you.

    I had another look at these hinges and I think they are probably nearer to 11.6 in length. It is amazing that you have a picture in your mind but the picture is just not exact enough. With best wishes JackBarnett21
