Great video! Brings back memories. I miss the low platforms. As a kid, I'd ride my bike there and enjoy the show but I don't recall the GG1s. I think I missed them on the NEC by a year or two, or they weren't what I was looking for (my version as a kid was the TYCO brown one with incorrect wheels). Everything else I saw. Except an Arrow blowing through the station - I've never seen one not stop at Princeton Junction! I also remember the pre-Arrow Dinky!
I think those are Arrow II's. Arrow IIIs didn't get single-arm pantographs until the 2010s, and these have one smaller air scoop at each corner of the cab rather than the Arrow III's one big one over the end door. They still would have been pretty new at the time...and yes, I have to agree the Arrows are still NJT's best trains.
What’s interesting is that by this time or around this time the tracks north of New Haven were either being rebuilt or had been rebuilt/realigned to accommodate higher speed trains and is what makes up the current alignment and tracks. All the current tracks and makes of the ties were laid in the 70’s because Amtrak planned on introducing high speed service. Obviously that didn’t happen for another 20-25 years
Correct me if I'm wrong, but they did have the Metroliner service back then - or was it only NY to DC? For some, it was the extreme version of "taking the train to work".
Great parade of trains, and a fantastic shot of a plain bearing on fire at 5:45. May be caused by a lack of lubrication or the cotton packing in the journal box being wrapped around the end of the axle.
I spent many a day at Princeton Jct between 1974-76, Look at the variety, something that is amiss today. There were at least 14 long distance trains a day with a mixed bag of heritage equipment pulled by GG1's and E60's. All that mixed in with freight trains and bolted rail.
Back when the railroad was fun. 4 guys, the Engineer drunk off of his ass, the Fireman whos running for the drunk Engineer, the Conductor who's stoned, and the Brakeman whos high on PCP. 4 guys and about half a million dollars a year in pay between them in a time when a Rolex cost $250. Ah, they lived the dream.
This is the stretch they did speed runs on in the 1960s. In 1965 the Metroliner prototype did 168, I think. The turbo train exceeded 170 through here as well.

Well, of course the GG-1 predates Amtrak. Most of them were built the shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Where had you thought they came from...? Amtrak had a real learning experience in trying to replace the GG-1; the E-60 did not have the high speed tracking characteristics that Amtrak needed.

When you hear that braking sound you know those are Amtrak coaches, such a shame they will be replaced in the couple years.

7:26 Shiny new Arrow IIIs, crazy that these are still 44 years later. Lowkey the best NJT train. In those times they were NJDOT.
