Centers at elbow height?!? What sadist came up with THAT? My dream lathe (a Rikon 70-100 with bed extension), which I currently have on my dream table (I designed it, and my brother-in-law helped me build it - couldn't have done it without ya, Mark!) puts the centers at just slightly below shoulder height (armpit height?) on my 6'3" frame. This gives me ZERO back OR neck strain. It's perfect and I never want to turn on any other lathe arrangement. I have crafted some smallpipe drones from cherry, with padauk chalice tops and holly ferrules. These drones need a chanter and a bag, so this sort of video is immensely helpful. I fully intend for the chanter to have the same slight taper as my beloved Leicestershire smallpipe. I have several smallpipe chanters, and none kick like the Leicestershire! This bad boy (I have both D and C) has OOMPH! The other smallpipe chanters I have sound more or less like practice chanters. I even have a vacuum chamber made of plexiglass so I can see the entire process as it happens. I cannot wait to submerge these parts in oil and apply vacuum to them. Should I use plain linseed oil, boiled linseed oil, or something else entirely? Thank you so much, Julian, for doing the things you do. You have added music to my life that was not there before.

Wow! Great to have your positive comments. There are about 6 more videos in this series on chanter turning. Keep watching this space! I use approx two thirds boiled linseed oil and one third genuine turpentine. It all takes place in the darknes of a steel tube. I like the idea of a plexiglass tube so I could see it all frothing, but one friend had his plexiglass tube shatter with gallons of oil all over the workshop floor. Take care!
