Hi Justin, what a timely video. As it happens I retired a few months ago and photography has since become my thing, literally a hobby, an obsession, a pursuit…I have since met so many fellow photographers, artists, accomplished professionals. Having a time of my life…greetings from Toronto, Canada…

Thank for this, Justin. I'm another retiree enjoying photography in retirement. I bought my first "real camera" and grasped the exposure triangle a bit under a year ago. It is truly a source of joy in my life, allowing me to exercise my creativity like never before.

I've been shooting for myself since my teen years in the 70's and still enjoy shooting for myself. At 62 (I don't think I'll be retiring anytime soon) I tried a few of the main stream cameras with all the new tech that you MUST have to be good, but I got tired of chasing tech and sold everything an picked up an older Leica M240 & Voigtlander 35/1.4 lens and feel in love with this setup.
I'm the old person that is the only one in the family that always takes pictures at all the gatherings over the years and enjoy that..
I just enjoy making images that I like. Thanks Justin..

Fantastic, Justin! I am that guy and every bit of what you say is what I found after having my trusty Nikon F Photomic FTN stolen 25 years ago and now rediscovering photography in retirement. I’m finding all sorts of new explorations and experiences. I still think with an ASA mind (!) but am having great fun with digital gear, especially those with simple menus and dials I’m very familiar with - think M10 and many Fugifilm cameras. Knowing I can go to autofocus as my aging eyes interfere is a bigger plus! Mostly, though, for all the reasons you so well state, I’m learning again and producing personal work that is very satisfying. Thanks for this wonderful piece of confirmation!

Yeah, I "fled" my FT job in 2020 and now consider myself "semi-retired" at age 63. I started photography around 2010 as a hobby and it helped me cope with a stressful job for 10 years. I spent those 10 years trying different cameras before gravitating to the Leica M. Now, I have a several Leica M lenses (more than I need) and a couple of M cameras and feel privileged to have been able to afford them when I did as i probably wouldn't consider purchasing them now as prices have gone up a lot. My photography interests have changed over the years and I hope I'm improving as I now cringe when looking at photos from that earlier period. You're right that photography is a perfect hobby on so many levels. Another benefit to aging is we can let go of any pressure to be "popular", knowing we never will be, and just enjoy being creative in whatever way we find interesting.

Hi, I really appreciate your videos. I booked my trip to Iraq next month. This is my third trip to Iraq. I do a homework before visiting a destination by reading books and watching documentaries like you advised in another videos (actually this is something advised by another channel hosted by ex-photojournalist/documentary photographer and I think it's genuine) so that I can learn about the place and have some background in my head, help me a lot when I communicate with the locals. Thank you so much.

Just start shooting with your smartphone. Things can be very simple and you can focus on the composition and subject.

Smartphones are the modern day equivalent of a point-and-shoot camera. The best camera is the one you always have on you.

I have been trying since I am semi retired X 3 years. I put it down then pick it up. The technology of everything (backup, printing, etc) gets in the way. I have a Leica M10R and a Fuji XT5.

I am 72 and retired last year.
I do street photography. As a result I walk the streets. I have a balance deficit

    • @martingreenberg870
      @martingreenberg870 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

And the PT has told me to walk at least 20’ daily. I take my camera with me. I have started doing intentional camera movement (ICM). Both street & ICM yield me with between 2-5% keepers. I need to do something easier.
Still looking for a camera I love. Last month I purchased an eight year old Panasonic GX8. Last weekend I purchased the P20mm pancake lens. A nice kit. Small and lightweight. I haven’t bonded with it yet but more will be revealed.
I’m retired but not flush with ca$h. Leica is way too expensive for me. I’ve borrowed Leica gear from the camera store for brief periods. I wasn’t excited with the experience. Yes, maybe too brief a period, so I’ll not shell out the money. The closest I get to Leica is my Panasonic Leica branded lenses. Fortunately one can do street photography with any camera or lens.

Great vid ! Your not only a great photographer but a great speaker as well, Hell I wanted to go out an start shooting but It's 8:17 in the PM here in the north of Cali on a sat night otherwise I might have, Hell I may still go out ! But seriously as for me I like to get up at about 3:30ish and head for Coloma to get the fogy sunrise picks or I'll swing by the American river near Folsom to get the same, and if I'm lucky I'll have gees or somebody in a canoe, However one time I remember I though I got Jesus walking across the river but it was one of those standup surfboards some idiot was standing on, It was early and really fogy and I was half asleep, but boy what a picture that would of been, I would have yelled "Hey Jesus !" "YES MY SON !" "Can you make me the worlds greatest Photographer?" "JUST TAKE MY PICTURE YOU FUCKING MORRON !".

You are right. I first got a camera at about 8 and have fiddled with them off and on since. Now retired I have the time. I have a few bodies and more lenses but have gone to three bodies with lenses which approximate what the eye sees. That is, 50mm on a 35mm body and so on. Better to get good with one lens than bad with a bunch. ;o)

Hello Justin, Long time veiwer, first time commenter. I took early retirement last October 16th. I started in photography back in the 70's when ASA was what we used to set up our cameras fast forward to today. What a learning curve now ISO has replaced ASA. I've been a long time Nikon shooter, Started wuth a Nikon FM now I am using a Nikon Z50 APSC rig. I Drool every time you talk about Lecia. I love B&W and the Q2M is my dream rig. I post things online, however I kinda wonder if I am embarrassing myself. Trolls will tell you what you want to hear. I don't know anything about using LR and the cost is a little prohibiting for my budget. Just rambling on and lost in Technology Cheers Jerry in Fort Wayne!
