  • The birch bark canoe is nearing completion! Peter makes the gunnel caps and then, on the most exciting day of the canoe build, drives the ribs into place. He then attaches the gunnel caps using square pegs into round holes. All that remains is to pitch the outside seams!!

    Many moons ago I said that I am really looking forward to the Birch bark canoe built. Well, it exceeded even my expectations. It sure is a massive project and a much bigger job than I thought. It is fascinating and a joy to watch.

      Thanks Christiaan. It is indeed a huge time commitment for something so small and light. One must enjoy the journey and not simply the destination when starting a birch bark canoe build. You’ve followed us from the start. Apparently the last Video was our 100th and I believe you have commented on all of them. We sincerely appreciate your support.

    Agree with giving time …. Peter you know a LOT about the different woods and their properties. Likely the Native and pioneers knew even more than you! And that’s saying a lot! I’ve noticed, even in the buildings and old farm equipment and tools of my parents 160 year old farm, they knew a lot about what wood species for what purpose. Add into that, they had to use the indigenous resources. The building roof rafters are all tamerac ( bark on ).

    Again Peter, I have really enjoyed watching this whole build from concept, through harvesting, and parts manufacturing, to build till now, looking forward to the finishing and launching. Couldn't help but noticing as you were installing the ribs how the out side of the canoe where it is stiched, resembles a good pair of jeans/pants or a sail canvas seam, guess that's because you've done such a good job on piecing and stiching up the bark, a big Hoozah to you now and, we'll give you three when your padeling and hopefully not bailing water.

    'SHE'S a WORK-OF-AR!' Peter! WELL DONE! I find it MOST amazing all the 'Gift' behind a simple tree. It's breathing, it's shade, it's fruit, it's shelter, nests and refuge 4 animals, timber for wood-working and heat and then the birthing of a canoe. I noticed a few wounds for all your hard labors and can sense the final; "AHHhhhhh" of sheer delight, as U paddle with Catherine. BLISSFUL moments of the 'True Joys' experienced in a life well-lived. You MUST be 'tickled pink'! My gratitude 2 U and Catherine 4 sharing this wonderful adventure. "A harvest of peace is produced from a seed of contentment." (proverbs). Health and God's blessing.

    I have thoroughly enjoyed every episode of this canoe build! Amazing craftsmanship and knowledge NOT often found in our so-called modern, educated, civilized world. Honestly, I have a most difficult time calling our current world any of those descriptives as it more often appears to me that we are just a bunch of trained monkey's that know how to turn on and off a light switch without any knowledge of how it works or where the electricity comes from ..........gee, did I just describe our current Congress?

    • @TheWoodlandEscape
      @TheWoodlandEscape  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t know about you Congress but, certainly a very close description of our Federal Government. As to our modern world, on a trip to a nature centre I overheard a group of school kids ( perhaps 10 years old) ask their teacher, who feeds the wildlife!

    Hi Peter, I’m catching up on all of your videos. Question : When were screws available to the pioneers and settlers? I’m really enjoying you channel, very interesting and informative. Thanks. Steve.

      Iron screws were around long before the colonists arrived at Jamestown. They were hand made one at time from usually square stock pig iron, file round and then the threads were hand file. Hard to fathom. I have a friend who hand makes the entire lock mechanism for flintlocks including the screws. Until I saw his amazing work I thought I had patience, lol. We appreciate your interest and support in our endevour, Steve.

    Magnificent job Peter, it’s been amazing to watch you build your canoe.
    Every step of the way I keep wondering how the natives did it without the relatively modern tools you’ve used.
    Looking forward to the launch.

      They actually had specific canoe building tools that date back approximately 3000 years. Almost as good as the steel used after European contact.

      @@TheWoodlandEscape Exploring those tools and methods would be an excellent “wee bit of history”.

    Peter, that's a great episode. I was wondering about when you were splitting out the gunwale caps. I'm wondering if you can control the split when everything is horizontal and sagging downwards. That's anwenjoyable way to work wh.en it involves something you like doing. It's not work anymore.

      @TheWoodlandEscape  ปีที่แล้ว

      It certainly isn’t a job David. As to splitting, if it is clear, straight grained, once the froe has found a growth ring it will follow it.
