@danysniper22 the small wire on the coil connects to the ON OFF switch, all the switch does is practically ground that wire to the body of the saw to cut off spark
Hi Donny, great videos, they've been really useful. I have an STIHL 017, which I have recently rebuilt completely, but I cant remember where the earth wire is attached? Indeed, I have an earth wire attached to my ignition coil
quick question, in the ignition coil, you have the spark plug wire and a switch wire, were does the switch wire connects, to the electric system or an ignition? thanks
hey @donynoy73 maybe you can help. stihl ts400 no spark. Have new plug new ingition module. double check my gap test with the on off wire connected and dis connected still no spark. will get a lite spark 1 every 100 pulls. help please
Hi donyboy73. For most of my trimmers, saws, etc. I use Trufuel 40:1 ratio. Would that type of fuel work on a 2 cycle engine that has a 40:1 fuel/oil ratio? Thanks.
Hi, Donny. DO you have a fuel line diagram for the TS420? I have one on which I have rebuilt the piston and cylinder assembly, replaced the carburetor and the fuel lines,, but it still won't hold an idle or maintain the speed without running out of fuel unless I keep pressing the primer bulb. Any ideas? Thanks. :)
When you have an intermittent problem, it must be hard to make the diagnosis. Did you find no spark, and then infer it was a bad module? Are there more steps to make that diagnosis? How do these modules fail?
my sthil saw wont switch off does this mean i have a falut in the ignition module i have clean all the points and tested them and they are fine so im guessing theres a fault in the module?
Hi mate, i have no spark to my plug?? i have tried a brand new plug and still no spark? how can i check to make sure its definatley the ignition module before i buy a new 1 as they are expensive????
Hi I have a ts400 new oem carb, filters, plug, new coil , new gas still flooding don't understand ? What it could be ? It runs only full throttle but very low rpm , any ideas?
Hello I have a chainsaw homelite 340, its coil ignition burns, I have not found on the market a replacement for the same model, can I use another model of a other brand? thanks for your vide
few weeks agoit makes me confused why you guys can test spark on hand and when I do that no matter what I use to isolate spark plug with my hand I STILL GOT TEASED ground it thank you .
Oh by the way I got a old right hand start mcculloch mac 10 10 auto with few problems when it's cold I can lift it up with starter handle but when it's hot it can barely holds there why it accelerat when it 's flip aside ? does broken muffler affect idle ? thank you
I have a homelite 33cc Ranger it has no spark at the plug but if I put a screwdriver in the boot I get a shock so I put a new plug in the boot and still nothing whats your thought
Hey Danny boy I have a ts 400 I been having problems every time i cut a piece metal I set the saw down I notice the blade won't stop spinning you think is Clutch ...??? Any help
I have a stihl 400 and I replaced the ignition coil. I haven't don't a compression test but I don't think I'm getting fuel to it. How does the engine get fuel? Like a vacuum hose? Thanks in advance
Hey DonnyBoy can you please do a video of you taking apart the saw and rebuilding for us to have a model of how it should look like. My TS420 worked however it no longer works
dony, can you do that to all the ignition coils ? ( remove the wire from the coil ) I have a good coil with a bad wire on my stihl 420 c magnum leaf blower..Thanks
I got a TS350 super cutoff saw. Just wondering maybe you can help me. It seems to run fine , then I start cutting and it boggs down then quits like it either starving for air or fuel I cleaned all the air filters stills does the same thing, Do you think it is the carb and if so is there a rebuild kit for this
Hi First of all thank for all your useful video I installed new carburetor on my Stihl Ts420 today it is start if hold the switch when i release the switch it is runing for a few second then turning off I tried so many time still doing the same I did play with carburetor screws I'm not sure if I did turn screw the right way or wrong way it is still the same if you can please help me with this problem
remember as well to connect the running ground wire to the peg in front of the short stud on the handle assembly. this is a major reason that people complain their saw won't shut down and have to stop it on the choke. it looks obvious that this should be the correct ground location, but it isn't.
Great Video,! my kill switch has a blue and brown wire coming off it. the new ignition coil only has a black wire and a ground. I am not seeing how I was to connect the two. Thanks.
How exactly does it shut of from switch to ignition coil mine will not shut off I'm thinking I have a missing part to ground it out from switch to wires
Donyboy73, I hava a Stihl TS 420 and just replaced the pull rope (not sure what's its given name), but it still does not start. The flywheel seems to struggle on making a complete turn. Seems to turn, but mid way it stops as if something is preventing it from completing a full turn. What may be the issue?
I have a stihl ts400 it runs good but slow when I accelerate it doesn't respond & cut fast, it goes at its own pace, do you have any idea of what it might be
hey @donynoy73 maybe you can help. stihl ts400 no spark. Have new plug new ingition module. double check my gap test with the on off wire connected and dis connected still no spark. will get a lite spark 1 every 100 pulls. help please
I have made a programmable ignition module for TS 400/410/420. Rev limit as well as ignition timing curves are programmable. Let me know if interested.
hi there i have a partner k650 activ2 and it wont start despite having great compression and a good spark and there is fuel getting into the cylinder head also what are your thaughts man.
Hi DonyBoy Montreal Quebec wants to noticed that blue smoke as you revved up the machine, is that normal OR it has too much Motor Oil? Ahh here my question : The mix is 50.1 50 parts gas to 1 part motor oil Please Dony, I don't have much schooling, I work best with machines and my hands. What does 50.1 mean? 1 Litre gas + 1 litre motor nawww that doesn't seem right Lets say I have a 10 Gallon gas tank ( the red one ) how much motor oil. 10 Gallon Gas add how much Motor Oil?
gaping is easy, if you don't have the correct thickness, you can always fold a business card and squeeze it in you vice then dial it with a caliper and so on ... don, is that a common disease or age related? I know these machines are much more robust than chainsaws for example. wouldn't be surprised if the module was actually exhausted in and out :)
Hey Don great video I replaced twice with aftermarket coils and still got no spark even disconnected grounding wire still nada spark have you ever seen magnets in coil weaken to cause the no spark? They are strong enuff to pull coil through the bussines card gapper.
My ts400 had no spark I've changed everything but the magneto and still no spark? Ngk plugs x2 the module I bought was off eBay think it's a Chinese special I've disconnected kill switches etc but is there something I've missed
Paulette Markfelder i had the same problem. When i replaced it i checked the wire over. There was a small small hole that was grounding out on the machine. Who ever had it apart before didnt tie or cover the wire it wore a small hole. I still have to change the wire over the winter before the season starts! Good luck.
Paulette Markfelder also be careful what you order over seas. The first one i got didnt fit properly and wasnt the exact same part, slightly different.
@danysniper22 the small wire on the coil connects to the ON OFF switch, all the switch does is practically ground that wire to the body of the saw to cut off spark
Very good idea with the business card! I spent a lot of time on an old Briggs mower trying to get a good gap by hand!
Great vid as always!

hey @donynoy73 maybe you can help. stihl ts400 no spark. Have new plug new ingition module. double check my gap test with the on off wire connected and dis connected still no spark. will get a lite spark 1 every 100 pulls. help please
Hey dony I have a ts400 and I think I need a coil but mine has 3 bolt holes and all I see on ebay is 2 bolt hole. Does either work
@spelunkerd because there is no points and just the ignition module it was the only solution to that problem
Hi donyboy73. For most of my trimmers, saws, etc. I use Trufuel 40:1 ratio. Would that type of fuel work on a 2 cycle engine that has a 40:1 fuel/oil ratio? Thanks.
Donny, I was wondering if you can help me with information on a carburetor rebuild for a Stihl TS420? Thanks!

Question about throttle linkage.... Is it just supposed to snap into the trigger slot? (Tool was brought in disassembled)
top class video donyboy73, top class.

same as ts420, coil should look the same, use part number i mention in video

@daand12 To be fair In one of Donyboys other videos he did say some would be in HD and others in SD where he has a backlog to get through
Sorry, I forgot to ask....how do i check resistance of the ignition coil to check if it is faulty or not?
I need a ignition coil for a cut off saw like this but its the older one that goes under the flywheel
I cant find one
I have a homelite 33cc Ranger it has no spark at the plug but if I put a screwdriver in the boot I get a shock so I put a new plug in the boot and still nothing whats your thought

+DEAN MIR make sure cylinder bolts are tight, also check fuel line. sometimes the crank seals leak and will cause that problem
donyboy73
Thank you
if the engine no compression what could be wrong is it fix able

Donny my 420 has a boot that is saudered and it has a extra wire
Any idea where I can find a Stihl TS 420 ohm setting for primary and secondary? I’m checking manuals and I’m not getting any data…
Thank you for the business card trick!
naw, i will stick to the big stuff. just a buddy, having trouble with the 021 stihl. got the coil fitted it. fired up first time, ok now, thanks.
@stoolie10 for myself i would but not for a customer
Great Video,! my kill switch has a blue and brown wire coming off it. the new ignition coil only has a black wire and a ground. I am not seeing how I was to connect the two. Thanks.

My chainsaw sound backfire when mechine hot. What diagnosis is it?
you should start small engine repair in your shop too, lol
I have made a programmable ignition module for TS 400/410/420. Rev limit as well as ignition timing curves are programmable. Let me know if interested.
sounds interesting
hi there
i have a partner k650 activ2 and it wont start despite having great compression and a good spark and there is fuel getting into the cylinder head also what are your thaughts man.

Anthony Guada
@daand12 an older video
The engine is rev limited to restrict spindle speed and this is done by the ignition module
As always, nice work.
gaping is easy, if you don't have the correct thickness, you can always fold a business card and squeeze it in you vice then dial it with a caliper and so on ...
don, is that a common disease or age related? I know these machines are much more robust than chainsaws for example. wouldn't be surprised if the module was actually exhausted in and out :)
Thats what i thought.
Wonder if i should breakdown & try the stihl replacement thats four times the price
WATCH MY VID HERE FIRST How To Diagnose An Ignition Module Without Any Special Tools
Hey Don great video

They are strong enuff to pull coil through the bussines card gapper.
JUST BEWARE OF aftermarket coils, I have gotten some that didn't work
