  • Hey guys, so this vlog post is chock full of content, including fun diving with sardines and Filipina freedivers in Moalboal, what the process of entering and competing in a freediving competition looks like, and short conversations with two local freedivers on Cebu that people in the freediving community might want to connect with while on the island. To make it easier for you to find the info you're interested in, I've included the time stamps below:

    • @thesailingsiren
      @thesailingsiren  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would go with the instructor over any particular agency, although PADI is still pretty new. Choose a reputable dive center rather than an agency. And it also depends on if you want to do it recreationally and know the basics or pursue competitions. It also depends on where you want to take your courses! So many things to consider! I can help narrow down your choices depending on what your location is!

    I have a highly ambiguous feeling about freediving competitions and freediving in general. My background in freediving is a frustrating story of getting an Aida 2* which left me highly traumatic and afraid of going any further because of contractions and especially the depth part where contractions already start around -7 m on my way down(!) making me suffer miserably. I have never ever been able to do a single -16 m dive where contractions didn't start at least before I was halfway my entire dive. Contractions are extremely uncomfortable and frightening for me, even when they just only started. Having to perform anything in freediving, even recreationally makes me shut down somehow. And having someone say I should continue even more. Please don't take this personally because there are a lot of self proclaimed "heroes" and so called "influencers" who do stuff like you do, and I happen to spill out my frustrations here, but these kind of video's just make me want to run away from freediving as far as I possibly can. They somehow give the impression that anyone can do it. And that it is easy. Even if it's only between the lines. You know what I mean? It's always the magic saying: "if I can do it, so can you, if only you believe in yourself enough." This doesn't motivate me, on the contrary. You see, whatever you do, if you fail, it's because you didn't believe enough in yourself, so the one saying the motivational stuff is always right. You just can't say: I'm not made for freediving, I can't stand the contractions, they're too uncomfortable. Oh no, they won't take no for an answer. It's like: "sure, you can do it! And it's all in your mind..." But they forget that everyone's different and freediving does NOT come as natural for everyone as most freedivers seem to claim. And I find contractions to be very physical. I simply despise the claim that it's easy. It's not. It's freaking hard. So, no, there's no chance I'll ever enter a competition. I'm simply not good enough for freediving on itself and second, I'll have to perform and that will make it a very lousy performance by definition. And another thing is this: I always hear(read) that freediving competitions are there not to compete against eachother but rather against yourself. I get the point, but then why do they still give a ranking of who's first, second and third? And then still, everyone is doing as if that isn't important... I don't get it. .....this writing oozes with frustration, I know, but I'm not even sorry for. Anyway, whatever. I'm glad you're glad. I guess.

    • @thesailingsiren
      @thesailingsiren  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing your experience! Just because I have had a positive experience with competitions doesn't mean that everyone is going to have the same experience. I have a background in competitive running, and it's taught me similar coping mechanisms with the feelings of competition that are somewhat relatable to freediving.
      As you said, freediving is a different journey for different people. I also get contractions on the way down whenever I'm progressing to a new depth, and I don't go deeper until the contractions go away. I struggled to get to 5 meters for two weeks as I learned about what I was doing wrong in my equalization. I don't know if you'd find this useful, but here is a link to a start of a 4 part series about causes of contractions at depth and misconceptions that people might have. It's by a guy named Harry Chamas of Freedive Passion, and his teaching style really resonates with me.
      th-cam.com/video/fC-7T-HDezk/w-d-xo.html
      I'm sorry that you had a negative experience with your AIDA course. I'm thankful that the place I learned didn't have time limits for completion of courses, as getting to a certain depth or a certain time before a certain deadline can be stressful and even dangerous for people who need more time to adapt, to learn, and to get concepts. If we went by those metrics, I failed my Level 1 and my Level 2 because it took me longer than projected to complete the course requirements! No pressure, but if you ever decide to experiment with freediving again, consider coaching sessions rather than courses, and let your metric for success be comfort and a solid understanding of what is going on in your body. Better to be a competent and comfortable diver at a depth that is enjoyable for you than a diver that gets new PB's but struggles to reach them. More about that in my next video. I wish you the best in your decision to pursue or not pursue freediving, and don't feel bad about sharing your experience! It's useful for people to see all sides of freediving training, not just mine. :)

    I am still fascinated that it seems your static time is limited by your body "shutting" down rather than the willpower of pushing yourself and tolerate the pain of urge to breathe. Do you think we experience this differently or is it the fact you tolerate pain better than others? OR what do you feel on record breath hold dives? Seems like you are fresh as a daisy when coming up, while I feel like dying in agony..

    • @thesailingsiren
      @thesailingsiren  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Keun, thanks for the compliment haha, but I am far from fresh as a daisy at 5 minutes. I do think that it is perfectly possible that we experience contractions differently. I don't feel pain. I feel discomfort, I feel contractions, but I do not feel pain. I also have experience training with people of all levels and backgrounds. Some have contractions that look like they're doing the worm, whereas others have nothing at all for 4 minutes. Some people don't have contractions but their sign to come up is a "sense of impending doom". It really varies from person to person. I did get past the mental barriers by training breath holds very frequently. Almost daily before any depth training. Just one dry static max a day can make a world of difference!
