You obviously know what ur doing and u may have heard of it before but I recently watched a TH-camr use apple cider vinegar instead of the metal rescue that u use . He had the same results as what u did with the metal rescue but I would imagine it would save u a couple of bucks. Also to counter act the acid in the vinegar he used baking soda and distilled water to prevent flash rusting . Hope that helps . Also love the videos ! Keep on building!
I used metal rescue on my tank a few months ago, works just as great as you described. Even on heavier rust, just have to leave it on for a bit longer. Highly recommend. No point in messing around with vinegar or nuts n bolts in tank or electrolysis anymore just spend the money it's worth it.
Josh Young 100 % agreed Unfortunately not everyone can afford the expensive stuff and I totally understand that so that’s why I decided to start my “Scrambler budget build challenge” makes you find a cheaper way and share the process. I hope you enjoy that build also 😊
Great work man! If you're on a budget and need to remove rust, I've had real good luck filling the tank with vinegar and letting it sit for about a week, then rinsing it out and sloshing WD-40 around inside to prevent rust until it's filled with fuel.
I just had great success with the Metal Rescue on my tank. Sealed it with Red Kote it appeared to work well. I used the Red Kote Dry so I could mix it a 1/3 at a time and not have it go off and be able to use it for the next few projects. Removing the tank badge holders was a disaster however.I went in a bit heavy handed and the spot welds tore three hole in the tank. On the second side I just ground it back a bit and will bog over it. Hopefully it will be rust free under there after a decent sand blast.
Hi David, Yes I know all about being heavy handed I snap bolts all the time and its get very frustrating but its fixable so that the main thing to remember i guess lol Thank you for your comment.
I use apple cider vinegar to remove rust on all kinds of stuff. Four gallons for less than $20 left in my tank for a couple days got my old '72's tank squeaky clean! Just rinse water, dry and apply some sort of coating/sealant real fast before flash rust appears. Try soaking rusty bolts in apple cider vinegar overnight. It's like flippin magic!
Thank you mate, I will make it happen as soon as I can, I've just started the Scrambler Build Challenge so I will be between the two bikes for a few months.
Thank you Mark. I've just started the Scrambler build so I need to think about the tank colour but I have plenty of time before I need to decide so thats a good thing :)
Love the glove box idea! Very smart! I agree with Holey Joe's comment about the vinegar and WD40. Was thinking of doing that to my tank in my bike project. Great job as usual!!!!
Love the videos.. do you know the distance between the the mounting holes of the fuel tank? My frame is 7.5cm wide do you think the tank will fit around it
Fantastic work once again Dan, well informative and executed, love the idea of the glove box in the hump also the brushed steel effect on the tank, the black, gold and silver combination looks awesome, keep up the good work mate 👍👍👍
Awesome video mate! I had the same idea of replicating the lines of the tank on the cowl but I haven't do it yet, how are you thinking to accomplish that? Cheers mate keep it awesome!
Of course I agree on the glovebox theme in the hump! Then there's a room for the sandwich. :-) If you could remove those ugly edges on the tank, things would look much better. Someone here wrote "USB charging in the hump" which I think is great. Or a cupholder? Why not? I have one on my travelbag in an angle so it is straight when leaning on the sidestand. :-) All my mates laughed when they saw it, but not when we had a break and I could use it. :-) Taillights and indicators in the hump? With small LED? Or a hinged hump that works as a sissybar when folded up? Keep up the good work and high spirits!
what about using a knife metal bluing on the tank? i love the brushed look. but the orbital marks dont work for me. loving this build. whatever you decide i am sure it will look great.
metal rescue is just phosphoric acid , available threw any hydroponic plant stores , its used to lower the ph , or raise i'm not sure ,im no gardenist, its also good to know its safe to the touch , but leaves metal very susceptible to rusting even quicker as it removed all oxidation.
Great job as usual. Do u plan on putting a permanent tank sealer,or just make sure the tank always has fuel? .......I am on the fence about using a permanent sealer. Hear great things about casewell sealer.
Hi I like what you are doing and enjoy watching your videos. There is a 3 step process for doing tank sealer on the inside. POR 15. if you want to go that way.
I like the bare metal look with brown leather seat but also see some jet black cafe racer bikes that I like so would struggle to decide, maybe bare metal look would be good for scrambler build to keep cost down then you have best if both worlds!
Not sure how well it would cut steak but give it a crack when she isn't looking and let me know how it goes lol :) Love this comment, it made me laugh :)
Thanks for the reply. Is that because it removes water and evaporates pretty quickly? I am actually redoing this process after using vinegar (I ended up with 4 pinholes and it flash rusting again anyway) so now i'm paranoid about it re-rusting. Regret not just forking out the money and doing it your way. Thanks for the vid.
Ian Madsen it is definitely possible to cut a square out and weld it up but you need to be sure to clean it and remove all the fuel before welding The only problem is that you will see the patch if you leave it bare metal due to fact the metal being slightly different shades. Unless I get another steel fuel tank and chop the patches out of that. It’s almost impossible to get the same colour steel
Mathias Møller Nielsen smack on with the year and everything 👍 Some small mods to the underside at the back end just because the top of the backbone bend was hitting, also the front u section mounts need to be sliced a bit on the tank so it slides over and the mounts on the bike it self will need relocating. Nothing major. If you have and more questions just ask :)
@@CafeRacerGarage Nice! I'm searching for a 650 tank myself as the lines are neat compared to the edgy dohc tanks.. I considered a sohc 750 super sport tank, but seems like the mods are to heavy to fit the dohcs. Thanks for the advice!
Next time just go to the pool shop and buy Hydrochloric Acid (Muriatic Acid) for a quarter of the price. Rust will be gone in a few minutes, and then seal the inside of the tank with Red-Kote or similar.

Great Idea my bike building brother :) I need to try this :)

Nice!...was thinking about doing the same to the tank on my build. Glovebox in the seat...YES!
Thank you mate, I will make it happen as soon as I can, I've just started the Scrambler Build Challenge so I will be between the two bikes for a few months.
Wow dan that came up awesome, i think the tank painted and all the defects fixed would look amazing. Well done mate take care, Mark.

Jo is a great guy and also makes cool videos :) thank you for your comment Wayne

the quality of work is outstanding
Thank you ma-man, I'm really grateful for your amazing comment. makes me want to make more videos :)
vinegar is a good cheap alternative or if your on a tight budget
I'm pretty sure they sell a coating specifically for the inside of gas tanks. Something that seals the metal from the gas and prevents future rust.
I sure like the brushed tank look however I think you did right by not going through with it I am sure it will look great no matter what you do.
thank you mate :) I will have to think about it some more.
do you think that CB750 gas tank will fit in the CX500 frame?
Fantastic work once again Dan, well informative and executed, love the idea of the glove box in the hump also the brushed steel effect on the tank, the black, gold and silver combination looks awesome, keep up the good work mate 👍👍👍
Colin Taylor thank you Colin, I love sharing this process if I know it’s helping inspire you to build yours :)
Awesome video mate! I had the same idea of replicating the lines of the tank on the cowl but I haven't do it yet, how are you thinking to accomplish that? Cheers mate keep it awesome!
What year tank are you fitting please??
I think the glovebox in the hump is a great idea, you could integrate some sort of locking system. Great video as always man keep it up 👍🏽
Charlie Power I didn’t think of that but it’s a good idea as long as it’s something simple :) thank you Charlie, I appreciate your ideas 😁
Can you make the hump with foum and cover with leather?

Great work, like the idea of the glove box. The paint job has clear coat finish? I saw one with a soft hump for a passenger, is it practical ?
Mario Paes yes I’m 90% sure it’s been 2pac with clear
what about using a knife metal bluing on the tank? i love the brushed look. but the orbital marks dont work for me. loving this build. whatever you decide i am sure it will look great.
good idea Richard, yeah the orbital marks don't look very nice. I will make come up with something :)

Also, I saw a black and white paint scheme. the white one was an ivory white, more or less. It was amazing.
Mario Paes black and white always work well together :)

No to sure. Im the same as you, however, If I do I will be sure to share the process :) thank you for the recommendation Brice, I will check it out

Tony Clausen thank you mate 😁
Does that tank fit on that frame without any modification? mounting points are all the same as original?
Nick Vitale no it requires a little modification Nick I did talk about this in my earlier videos if that helps
Put the badge back and keep the rust look , Awesome.but up to you .
Curious what year tank this is? Was it hard to install on the 93 nighthawk?
It wasn’t very hard to fit after you relocate the mounts and it’s a 1979 CB 650 tank

Ryan Mills I like your ideas 😁 I’m not sure of colours to go with on the scrambler yet but up for ideas :)
Nice!!!
Where is the final video? Greet job Dan 👍🏻
Totally agree with the Dremel statement , I could quite happily cut up my steak with it if the missus would allow me to
Not sure how well it would cut steak but give it a crack when she isn't looking and let me know how it goes lol :) Love this comment, it made me laugh :)
Hi mate! Did you rinse the tank with water before adding the dry coat? Doing this myself now. Cheers!
saya sin I think I used metho (rubbing alcohol)

Where the old badge was, is it possible to fill the divets by welding something over it? or is it too thin of metal?
Ian Madsen it is definitely possible to cut a square out and weld it up but you need to be sure to clean it and remove all the fuel before welding

@@CafeRacerGarage that makes a lot of sense! Interested to see what you end up doing, because I also like the bare metal look!
I would love to see it as a two seater because in sweden it is hard to change between one and two seater and get it registered.
I didn't know that Anders but I plan to keep this build with the rear pegs and have the seat interchangeable from one to two seats :)
Good content, might consider getting to the point though
hi mate how do you get your seat covered do you do it yourself or do you go somwhere?
if so where do you go?
pablo broughton hi Pablo I haven’t yet covered my seats but I have a guy that is going to do them for me at Nerang on the Gold Coast. Are you local?
Cafe Racer Garage no lol I'm over in England I'm sure there's people that can do it over here though.
Nice bike! Is that a 750 fuel tank? Looks like a 650 from 1979. Did it just fit without any mods?
Mathias Møller Nielsen smack on with the year and everything 👍

Mathias Møller Nielsen any time my friend, hope all goes well with your build. :)
Is that the original tank for the bike?
No Tom, Its a cb650 1979 tank custom fit, I did a video on the fitting of this tank in some on my early videos :)
Please, what song is it at 13:55 ?
marsantilli I believe it’s called on the table.
Thank you. I Found it. I love your channel
awesome and thank you, I love sharing it with you

in my opinion the tank looks a bit bulbous, you could conside knee indents to sleek it out a bit
dave
Ha! You said gas tank!
Jaime Flores gotta mix it up a little lol 😂
Maybe a usb charger in the glove box as a phone charger?
cool Idea Daniel :) love it
What if I just want a rusty ass tank.
