    556. Make a latching, delayed on. So you can use a momentary switch for on and a momentary switch for off.

      @@ed-jf3xh if you make a latch using a latch, then its just superfluous machinery. like in maths, if you use trig functions to make a trig function, then it doesnt count either. real trig only uses basic algebra moves, otherwise its not its true genesis.

    I love these ones. Reminds ya why ya love this stuff. By the why I got one of the electronics for dummies book from my library but only looked at last nite. I was proud to say I had already learned almost all what was in the book.(which was brilliant by the way it's called "electronics "all in one" for dummies" by Doug Lowe) it had some very cool bits at the end that shows you how to program. And to make not/and/or/ gates with transistors . Bloody brilliant. 😁

    A TL494CN IC is also compatible here and is used drastically in the electronics world. It's a PWM SPMPS driver ic.

    Mr. Paul thankyou very much for this video , it really helped me. But i have doubt about the circuit diagram that you drew in the first place as you have connected the capacitor directly to the +Vcc but i think it should also pass after switch because if it s directly connected to +Vcc than how the circuit will take time to on the output, guide me if i am wrong

    I am asking this because I want to make sure I understand the 555 timer; it definitely draws my interest as you videos do! In you diagram shouldn't the capacitor be on the other side of the switch instead of directly connected to the positive +6 VDC? Again I may not understand how the 555 time work. Thank you for the great videos! I really like the "circuits you should know" series"!

    Love your stuff. Looking for a method to extend the duration of a timed circuit. In other words extend the duration that the circuit remains on before shutting off. Kids space ship, with flashing lights and siren. push mom. on and beeps flashes for 10 seconds. I would like to make it 30 seconds or whatever.
    Simple design. 1 8 pronged miniature IC few caps resistors all micro. threw some caps at it nothing.
    I should just watch more of your vids like this one. lol.
    The 555 timer challenge, ok. I like your "delay on" circuit I can use that. cool, thanks.
    Great tip on using the diodes for protection, thank you, excellent.
    I would also like to mention the method you have selected to connect your power supply to your breadboard. obviously better than a single connection and much more secure. I will be adopting some of that; (smart).
    who's this guy? It's me, just me having fun with electronics. I know you don't know me, but I'll comment as if you do.
    You know connecting things up on the bread board can be tediously time consuming using bare hands, especially as it gets populated. I started using tools to push items into position. mini needle nose pliers, hemostats. They are easier to see through and much faster. I'm sure you probably have different methods as well.

      This circuit can be found in the datasheet with the formula and derivative. You should be able to rearrange the equation to find any variable by freshman year if your an EE student.

    This is fascinating, but I made one following this as closely as possible (I used a zero PCB and I soldered directly) and the light turned on instantly. I used a 470 uf capacitor, but that's the only difference. Everything else was the same.

    Neat little circuit. However, even with the change in capacitor placement, you could miswire the circuit according to the schematic. Double check your work with his actual build just to be sure.

    I'm very much a beginner. My breadboard has a 2.7v capacitor, LED with resistor, small toy motor and 3 AA batteries in a power pack. The circuit works, LED an motor continues to run a short time from capacitor storage. How would a circuit be made to first charge the capacitor , disconnect AA battery pack; then enable the 2.7v capacitor to run the motor and LED using a bread board on/off switch? (LED fades as power is drained from capacitor)

      Nah, the capacitor loads the resistor. Anything connected to the capacitor will have the current voltage of the capacitor.

    The 555 is basically an opamp. I used an LM358 for my timer. Used half of the chip. The unused opamp has pins 6 & 7 shorted together to produce a voltage follower. Pin 5 is grounded. Tried posting a picture of my rig. Uses one chip, one cap, three resistors and an N-Channel MOSFET to drive the load.
    A note on your rig - the FET should follow the load, not power it. Unless you used a P-Channel MOSFET. P channel FETs are fewer and more expensive. You MIGHT want to tell us what MOSFET you used because the way you used it suggests a P channel, not an N. And leaving pin 4 of a 555 floating is not recommended. Can cause oscillation which can lead to heat and damage of the chip. Pin 5 can be left open OR used as a second part of a timing circuit.

    Well, not to be a smartass, but technically the LM317 and 7805 and 7812 are ICs too. Each of them gets used A LOT too, maybe more than the 555 even? I'm not entirely sure.

    Sorry for the noob question but does current actually pass through the capacitor? Why would it trip the timer after its fully charged? I thought it kinda works like a battery where the current comes out the positive end when needed.

      No current passes through a capacitor. A capacitor gathers charges on its plates. The charges are released from the same plate on which they gather.

      Thank you. The charges accumulate on the plates. They don't pass through. Then when conditions change, ie, it now has a path to discharge, those charge go back in the opposite direction that they came from. Just remember this, capacitors block DC and pass AC.

    Why does the Capacitor need to wait for the switch to be activated when its attached directly to vcc? I don't get it

      I was confused too. As far as I can tell, the diagram is slightly wrong: the capacitor is actually connected to the lower part of the switch, not VCC. You can see it when he shows the circuit at 2:46, he explains that the capacitor is connected to *other* side of the switch (not the VCC side) and to pin 2 of the 555.

      After power on and wait for stabilization of power, then do a one time self test of a warning alarm, for example. Yea , my boat overheated but the alarm was dead.

    Your schematic is incorrect. The cap is connected directly to V+ in the schematic but is connected after the switch on your breadboard.

      Using such a powerfull MCU for a simple start delay is a misuse! the NE555 is very cheap, simple to use no need for programming code or tools

      Attiny series mcu are tiny. But 555 can have better power supply flexibility. E.g, can easily used in a car.
