Remember this coming out and being dismissed as cheap bubble gum pop, listening to it over 20 years later there's nothing cheap sounding here. It's really beautiful, professionally put together, each part clearly played/programmed by pros who were the best at what they did. This is hard stuff.
Imagine being 16 recording this and a year later, you’re now a household name. Such an iconic song!!! Fun fact: Britney was given a few demos of other songs but she just couldn’t find “that” song. And when BOMT landed to her lap and heard the first three notes, she said to Fe (her then Assistant/Friend) “This is it!!! This is my song!!!” or something like that 😅 Another fun fact: Jive Records was pushing her to have a Power Ranger themed Music Video, but she did not want that for her first music video. She came up with the concept, look and scenes. If i’m not mistaken, her entire outfit was less than $50. Another another fun fact: Max Martin heard the first three notes in his mind as he was sleeping or about to sleep. Good thing he decided to get up, record it before going back to sleep. Damn.
always thought she delivered the vocals on this track (and her whole debut album in general), but hearing them like this makes it even more impressive. she gets a lot of shit for it, but her voice is incredibly versatile - and those lows, mid-belts in this are 👌🏼 thanks for dissecting this iconic piece of music history!
She has/had such a natural talent, she could REALLY SING, will never understand why they tried to make her voice sound so "baby-like" later on... She was/ is such a great vocalist, my god, thanks for this video
Her natural vocals sounded very similar to xtina so her producers made her change her voice cuz they wanted her to sound unique. Without that baby voice she probably wouldn’t have become as successful as she’s now
Dude!!! Thanks for this man! I’m doing a music production degree and this has been really great to listen to to finally hear one of my favourite songs broken down like this. And your great to listen to and very pleasing on the eye too 💋
Im going to expect that the instrumental for this is going to be simple but idk why its so addicting and is really going to make you move. Going to watch this bcs its such an iconic banger and how those piano keys can really make you dance lol
I always thought she sounded like a strangled duck , but her vocal timing and double tracking is very accurate. She does have that Britney quack, but what she lacks in pleasant tone, she makes up for in very expressive vocal styling, with a hint of MJ.
Thanks so much! I have a tonne of Britney up! She’s a personal and a fan favourite! Apologies in advance for my ramblings I truly do get carried away! Had a great time making these. :)
Loved when I saw this on my feed. Sooooo good. Thanks for all your varied content musically. Love the the Britney vids and some Gaga would be amazing. Something huge line bad romance would be epic. Keep up the amazing work. Peace from Scotland 🏴
M I saw somewhere that it was a combination of Martin's idea to have a soft vowel sound and Britney's Southern accent. The hard "y" sound felt uncharacteristic.
This is so brilliant! It’s amazing how you break this down! What exact program is this that you use to pull apart songs like this? I want to do this on my MacBook, but I’m unsure what program to use!?
Tbf a better comparison would be ‘Backstreet’s Back’ and Britney’s ‘Stronger’ - so many identical components in those. This mash up of ‘Baby One More Time’ with BSB’s ‘The Call’ is brilliant, but demonstrates just how similar the production was at Cheiron: th-cam.com/video/IjSo0luWj4k/w-d-xo.html I’m sure I once read that the drums on ‘Oops I Did It Again’ were just recycled from ‘Baby One More Time’.
Back in the late 90s/early 2000s, this was a classic Max Martin signature. He literally created a genre of musical style. I remember when BOMT debuted on the radio- everybody was bobbing their heads to this! Older,younger,black,white,Asian-it didn’t matter.
I appreciate all your work, your passion and your proffesionalism! Agree with you when you say `More Britney to come` but please, say `More Spice Girls to come` also, since yours `Spice Up Your Life` was DEMENTIAL and I need so bad to uncover some other Spice Girls' songs. Thank you! Million thank you!
I am unable to find more spice girls unfortunately! I REALLY want to do some more but I just can’t seem to find any sessions. If you ever find anything please let me know!!!! Thank you so much for the kind words Ovi! Thank you for your support
Hi There Broden Most Of Those Tracks Would Have Been A lot More But, It Sounds Like The Original Tracks We’re Bounced Together So That’s Why The Drums And There Effects Are All Together There. Studio Tricks!!!🤪🤪🤪
They're obviously real. Backing vocals are by Nana Hedin, Max Martin and Britney herself. You can't just generate backing vocals, not even today. And definitely not in 1998. You can use Melodyne to make a clone of the lead vocal sing a harmony, but it tends to sound robotic and thin compared to real harmonies. I think some Katy Perry songs and newer Britney songs have used this method.
Yes? There is hardly any AutoTune on this song. AutoTune had just barely come out back then and it didn't sound very good. It was very obvious in its early iterations.

can't believe these amazing vocals are of 16 year old legendary miss Britney Spears😍😍
One of the most iconic pop songs of all time. Any chance you might be able to do Hold It Against Me?
I love this. I have an obsession with vocal stems and so happy you did this lol.

She may not be fuckin Whitney Houston but I will admit she has a decent voice for pop music.
Can’t argue with that!

Max Martin is a genius!

I love the snare , still searching for a one shot sample of it! Nice review btw. Thanks
this is the best pop song ever, not only according to me, but to Charli XCX

Of course Max Martin did Backstreet’s Back. As you said, it’s practically the same song!

29:30 That's her southern (USA) accent. They prolong the first syllable and weaken the last part.
