Similar situation but better outcome: I was 2nd mate on watch on a Navy Oiler and the USS Midway (Carrier) was on our portside and closing. The carrier told us not to worry, they will pass astern of us. I had several instruments keeping track of the carrier but the most important was the portside bearing circle. I was keeping a bearing on the carrier's bow. The bow was closing rapidly and on a steady bearing. This is an "in extremis" situation in which in my judgement, collision was inevitable. With the carrier closing fast under 2 miles away, I called the captain. After assessing the situation himself, he gave the carrier a choice, either you turn to port, or we turn to starboard. Since we're the oiler and all the ships in the formation are taking station on us, the carrier turned away. I can still remember the looks on the faces of the sailors on the deck of the carrier.
The fact that the Queen Mary still exists is amazing, I wish they did the same with The Olympic as that would have been the closest most of us would get to the Titanic & Britannic.
@@JeffWeselyan Oh god, you're one of those people who think the Olympic & Titanic were switched out for insurance fraud? The time between the Olympic & Hawke collision & Titanic's infamous maiden voyage would make swapping them impossible. The Olympic's interior was fairly different from the Titanic in terms of style & art, so it's not like the whitestarline could've just swapped them out with just a few changes, they'd have to change alot inside the ship.

I first heard about this incident when I visited the RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA during the 1980s, however, at the time I had misheard the story and for a while thought that the Queen Mary sank a Japanese transport of some sort. That idea, somewhere along the line, altered to a Dutch merchant ship. Weird how that happens. Anyway, two things I'd like to add about this story, which I still find fascinating and will always take time to hear about it again which obviously benefits me as I tend to find out newer, if not more accurate details such as was the case from watching this video, (thanks for that Historic Travels,) 1: Nowadays the RMS Queen Mary has a reputation for being haunted. One of the most commonly experienced paranormal phenomena happens within the prow section of the ship where people will sometimes hear the ghostly sounds of a collision happening along with men screaming. 2: Another, I'd speculate, more pressing reason that the incident was covered up was for morale purposes, i.e., the admiralty and other higher-ups felt that the details of the incident could cause a lot of strife between different factions in relation to who would support which sides of the arguments of who was at fault, (such as would happen after the war during the more thorough inquiry,) plus the animosity that may have been felt by the families of the sailors who lost their lives due to the incident. Sam a good video and coverage. Just to clarify the overtaking rule, which is now Rule 13 in the collision regulations, the vessel overtaking has an obligation to keep clear, not the vessel being overtaken. The issue here was that one ship QM thought it was an overtaking situation given the angle of approach so they had right of way and the Curacao thought it was a crossing situation because they were on the QM's starboard side so they had right of way, so BANG. I think after this the Admiralty issued instructions that the escorts were to keep out of the way given that they were more manourevable. This crossing veers overtaking situation has caused more collisions that I care to count. I very nearly had one myself when the other ship maintained we were overtaking and we reckoned we were crossing. She was a huge tanker so we got out of the way.
Commodore Harry Grattidge's "Captain of the Queens" was a great read. I remember one story of the QM where Grattidge raised anchor to face a storm that had blown in while in a French harbor, but the anchor snagged some big WWII era communications cable and the ship ran aground at the stern. He said it was repaired by filling the space with concrete and I think always leaked afterward. Hopefully that concrete has long since been removed; rather bad for long term hull survival. Highly recommend that book for some interesting entertainment and nautical history.
HMS Curacao is pronounced 'Curra-sow'! Those 32 Knots the Queen Mary traveled at during wartime helped to wear them out before their time (also Queen Elizabeth). One of the reasons these ships were taken out of service in the mid-1960s in addition to the Jetliner.🙂

Hey Sam, I got another ship disaster for you to look into, that would probably make your blood boil. Me just thinking about it makes my stomach turn because the negligence and lack of care that was put into it. The Sewol Ferry incident in 2014. Which in my opinion, is one of the worst disasters modern times. The story is that somewhere off the coast of North Korea, a ferry was going on a cruise carrying cargo and passengers over its capacity. As a result, the ship ended up taking on water and capsizing. This is another example of a captain who refuses to do his job and straight up lies to the cost guards, resulting in the fate over three hundred passengers. Most of them were high school students on a field trip. I don’t know if this is a topic you would want to discuss. But in my opinion it blows Captain Schettino’s actions out of water.
