I remember the Summit Diner well. We ate there every weekend on our way to visit family. They were known for their French fries and gravy. The whole community gathered there and the camaraderie of the patrons sharing a cup of coffee or eating a dinner was always very close. I remember two waitresses that were so kind and ran the place well....Dorothy and Peg. We loved that place, and it will be fondly remembered as a hometown diner, full of bar stool stories over a plate of delicious food. Vintage for sure.....

Found a write up from '99 about this place:
      www.roadtripamerica.com/eats/summit.htm
And another site claiming it closed around 2008:
www.roadarch.com/diners/pa.html (at the bottom of the page.)

I love how the curtains look so perfect, they really make the shot. It would still look cool without them, they just add so much to the look.

REMEMBER THAT PLACE! I had a friend who lived in the area and we ate there many times. As I recall they served some great diner food and had friendly waitresses. So much better than cookie cutter chain places.

was born and raised in summit twp, went to the summit diner when i was a teenager many times,it was a nice little place to sit and eat and talk to the people. was very sad to see it close. i still live nearby and always go past it on 422 and still say today that i wish someone would open it back up and i would love to cook there.

I wish someone would save this diner. It's a shame that it has been abandoned for like 20 years.

My mother-in-law worked here for years. She supported her 5 kids working here after her husband passed away. My husband and I live just up the road, literally a walk from here. We live on the property where she raised her kids. She would walk here daily and work and then walk home. They had the best pies. A lady made pies every day to serve. They waitressed and cooked for you. Had great food. Breakfasts were amazing good diner food. They have not been open for decades which is a shame. Love these old diners. Some people different times wanted to fix it up and reopen it but the owners wanted way too much to make it practical to buy it and fix it up, so it never happened. The basement has so much mold in it, it would take a lot of work to get this back into working condition. Shame, as it is one of a kind any more. So few still survive. 422 is a very busy road and I can't help but feel it could do well now a days. There is much more traffic out this way now than there used to be. I hate watching it waste away. The new owners of the property have no interest in doing anything with the diner and will let it rot away until there is nothing left. They want to park trucks there behind it so don't care about the diner. If any one has lots of money they want to invest maybe you could talk to the owners and reopen it. I would love to see it open again.

My aunt used to run this place when I was a kid. Like 3-5 years old. They used to do car cruises on the weekends, and we were there almost every Sunday. She passed away this year, and she always talked about missing it. Sad to see it like this.

It’s always been called the Summit Diner since my dad can remember & it’s been closed for several years. My dad & a friend of his went in there once in the 70s when it was open & he said it was a dive. He said the inside was gross. He said him & his friend went to the bathroom, washed their hands & left it was that gross. It looks like it was open only for breakfast in the last days. You can see where they added the bathroom on cuz the color scheme is a little off & lighter colored.

My aunt and uncle owned this diner- summit diner- in the 90's. They had great food but there just wasnt enough business and it needed alot of updates that were more costly than the revenue it was producing. They sold the diner and I dont think it was open much after that, if at all.

Maybe being so unknown has been a blessing. You notice how it's not been pillaged, tagged, and vandalized in the long time (1999) that it's been closed. Not even the lace curtains are ripped! Almost looks like a giant weed whacker on the weekend, and you could be back in business!

I did the payroll for this diner for quite sometime in the early 2000's. Ed Widenhofer, who is now deceased, owned the diner. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the husband & wife that ran the restaurant until shortly after Ed's death. I know her first name was Debbie. (if I think of it later, I will post it) From what I understood at the time of the closing, Ed's family inherited the diner from Ed's estate & with trying to run the gas station & little store, beside it, decided to close the diner.
