This may get explained later, but in this game "small roads" means the lines have to be strung out farther. Larger roads means we can tuck our columns in closer for travel. Neither one affects marching speed per se, but as in this video it's affecting how fast the Austrian 6th corps can start moving at all.
I was playing Archduke Charles of the Austrians, the on-map boss, marching with 2nd Corps -- we knew the roads were going to be snaggled so we stepped off on this plan, with the expectation that by the time we (2nd corps) cleared off the joint path, 6th corps would be finally catching up to us. I seem to recall this turned out true, but we'll see in the next video perhaps.

    Marshall Davout here.
I had the biggest and best Corps in the army. No use wasting it sitting around on the edge of the map waiting to get orders. The army needs my strength at the decisive point, but where will that be? I have no idea where anybody is.
I decided to leave the smallest force I had behind as a garrison and hit the road. Where? to the center of the map! That is where the two armies are mostly likely to collide. Odds are I'll connect with the rest of the French quicker from there as well.
