It depends on your own environment. Being from South Florida, l water thoroughly every month to flush. Because of high humdity and winds on average 7-9 with a gust and precip atleast 10-15% min..it's enough moisture. when l get home in the evening, I check for severe dryness, then I mist from sprinkler head. l really don't have to water or mist daily. my media consist of lava rock, clay pebbles and a little spagh. my environment is truly heaven for my orchids. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent video. Simple advice, very clearly explained. The information about the roots is obvious when it's put like this, but it's so easy to overlook because they are usually out of sight.
Hi Brad. I noticed you don’t have your phalaenopsis in clear see through pots. I’ve ensured all mine are as I’ve done some research and thought that was a requirement. I’ve been growing them for a good few years and found that if I leave them constantly in water, they will continue to flower, for at least a year at a time. They are on my east facing kitchen windowsill. I feed them baby bio, not orchid feed! I live in the UK. Thought I would share my experience with you and others 🙂
Brad, what a great video! Great advice and wonderfully presented. I really liked the comparisons. It makes so much sense! Also, now, I feel a lot better about the fact that for months I have had the impression that two of my Miltoniopsis standing next to each other seem to want diffeent amounts of water. Same type of plant, same environment, different preferences...apparently, it is just the way it is :)
Hey Brad, I just got a dendrobium kingianum seedling. I'm unsure of what basic care to give. Can you please help? While on the water topic, can I go by root color like a phal? I have it potted in bark, river rock, and a few pieces of sphagnum chopped fine, all in a pot full of holes for air circulation. I understand the winter rest. No water from Halloween to Valentine's Day. But because it's a seedling and I'm not worried about flowers for the next few years, should I still allow for winter rest? Or maybe wait until it's larger and able to give a good show? How about light in general? I've gathered a little bit of info and I believe they like lots of sun and water, but how much is that? I've never had a den and I really want to succeed. I would cry if such a beautiful plant died due to my error. Any help or advice you can give will be much appreciated. I've asked a few people for info, but no response. I know Danny got one and got some info from you regarding care. I trust you both when it comes to plant care. If you get the time, please give me a few basics to keep it healthy. Thank you in advance. Love watching your videos, can't wait for new uploads.
I've only got a few supermarket orchids but I think they are doing better since I started watching your videos. I thought I'd be excited if they bloomed again but I'm excited when they start to grow a new leaf! I have a mini orchid that is growing another leaf but on the end of its former bloom stalk. So weird. Is that another orchid? Without knowing the name I'm sure that question is hard to answer. As far as watering question, can I just mist the top roots when they look dry? I've repotted a few of my orchids and they are much too wet underneath, but the top roots are a little grey green. They green up nicely when I water, I worried about the under roots. Thanks again for your videos. And my orchids thank you too. 😊
Hi Brad! So, first of all I loved this video. Do you have a written water schedule for all those orchids. I have a quarter of the orchids that you have and I'm constantly trying to remember when to water who and so forth. How do you keep it all straight? If you have any suggestion, that would be great. Thx!
Wow....thank you for this useful information about watering. Can I please have the full name of the second orchid shown by you? It is the Epidendrum. Thanks in advance...😊
Hi Brad, great video. Question, how much humidity is right for your greenhouse? I am having trouble with high humidity. I am having buds blast and I really think it is because my humidity at night the last week has been so high, they are too wet and cool. By the time I caught it, it was too late. Temps were in 60's, but humidity was in 90's. I have added two more fans. Do you think that will keep the humidity down, I have wrapped the g/h getting ready for winter, so that probably added to holding the humidity in. Appreciate your input and teaching.
Hi Susan, I guess it will depend on the orchids, all but the warmest growers are fine at 65f and lower very easily. All previous years my winter low was 52-55f . At this them some of my phal's got a bit of cold damage and bit of bud blast. As for humidity, greenhouses naturally have a rise in humidity at night, your likely higher than 90%. Which is fine, fans won't lower the RH. My concern is why are the plants wet? Dew would only form on cold surfaces and the orchids would be no colder than the rest of the greenhouse. Make sure your not spraying them directly with mist/ fog/ water. My plants are always dry, until I water them and always dry through out the night.
+Brads Greenhouse Thank you Brad for the reply. Well, I guess the humidity isn't the problem. They plants aren't wet per say, I meant the humidity was just high and I thought that meant they were wetter. But the plants are not wet and their bark is not wet. I have been very careful about watering and water in the tops. I only have Cattleya's, Vanda's and Dendrobiums in the greenhouse. Temp's have been fluctuating from 74 to 85 outside and inside the G/H daytime and 60 has been the lowest at night. I have not been consistent with the temps at night. Some nights have been 60 to 67. Our weather here in Missouri has been all over everywhere. I just don't have a handle on G/H growing yet. You are right about the fogger spraying on them. The Den's are right beside the humidifier/mister and was blowing on them but I usually turned it off in the evening, but they may not have had a chance to dry off before dark. Well, I have a lot to learn. So thankful I have folks like you to help. I always welcome your comments. Thanks again
Great video! What an amazing stanhopea. That large dracula is fantastic. I'm glad you used it as an example (it was hanging there and I was curious to know what it was).
Hi Brad, i am so glad i found your channel several months ago, i do have a question, i purchased an onc. jungle monarch 'pacific pride' and a onc. marfitch 'howard dream' they are both in promix, i have always used traditional bark mixes and i am not comfortable with these orchids in promix although the grower i bought them from has good luck with it, one has a bloom spike, when can i repot them into a bark mix? i grow the orchids in my home during the winter in a south window with a humidifier and fan.
Repot after it's done blooming. Be careful after you repot, the roots that are currently on the plant are good for the environment/media they grew in. Change it too drastically & they'll die & the plant will have to rely on new roots (for the new type of media) to take off again.
My biggest confusion may be the simplest. Don't judge me! =p I've always wondered how you're supposed to prevent water from getting into the crown of an orchid if you're misting/watering/showering them. It seems like that would pose a big risk for them.
This is probably the best video I've watched on watering. Thank you!

Great knowledge shared.
I hope I should be able to figure out a watering chart for my orchids. 🙋♂️
oh I learn so much thank u I've been watering mine once a week everyone is happy and bloom like crazy
Fantastic info Brad. I really struggled to understand how damp Orchids need to be.
Thanks for the useful information... I have been monitoring my orchids as we have very dry hot days in our summer here in Bulawayo Zimbabwe
lovely video and probably the most concise clip on watering, a pity however to keep breaking up huge plants
Very helpful information. Your orchids are gorgeous. Thanks for sharing.

I know it depends on the plants but about how much spacing do you space your shelf's apart?
HELP? How do you prepare plants for winter? I'm Zone 6 my baby lemon, orange trees few other house- plants that wont last under 32°
Depends on what type of orchid. Some need a cool dry rest to set flower buds, others will catch their death of cold under 65°.
it is a good video bro. Keep going this work and thank you. Very informative
Very good guidance Brad. Thanks
very true Brad, What is the size of your GH, I've only got an HFGH 10x12
I would love to see the repotting of the plants in the basket, please!!!!
+Carol Torres I'll see what I can do!
+Brads Greenhouse so nice, thank you.
