This was always ran by Strack and Van Til out of northwest Indiana. Ultra was originally their answer to Cub Foods; warehouse type store, bag you own groceries, etc. Store opened as Cub in the mid 80s until the early 2000s, when they switched to the Ultra name. I'm not sure why they chose to run this store as Cub and not Ultra since the latter was located a few miles east in Highland, Indiana, and was well-known by those in the Lansing/Calumet City area. They even closed on Sundays like all of their stores did until 1998 or 1999.
That used to be a super popular place. Ultra Foods took it over after Cub Foods. Hardly any grocery stores left in Cal City and Lansing.
I used to work at this store. I worked there for 21 years.
