    I'm a pediatrician, recently board certified doctor. It's important to be smart and shop around with undergrad, medical school, and residency. I had 100k debt when I finished medical school and I did not have help from my parents. I did not live at home. I had a scholarship in undergrad so that was fully paid for. I chose a cheap med school 17k per year, did not own a car, and lived frugally by renting cheap and cooking my own food.
    You should not take 30 Years to pay off your loan. I paid it off in 4. Never make a minimum payment. I dropped 1500 per month while I was in residency, and then almost 5k per month once I got a job. Now I'm debt free after just 1 year of being a pediatrician.

      (No U) is wrong. It takes 10-12 years OF PURE COLLEGE SCHOOLIng (Undergrad+grad+residency). For your case of "how long to become a pediatrician," it takes 4 years of medical school, and 2-4 years of residency. You should know that every single doctor (even dentists and optometrists) take 4 years of medical/dental/optometry school plus a few years of residency.

    • @orionary8917
      @orionary8917 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You should know every single doctor is different. It all depends on WHERE they are working at. For example, a doctor in LA would make less than a doctor in a small town of Ohio because there are a lot of doctors in LA compared to a small town in Ohio. It also depends on HOW EXPERIENCED you are, aka how long you've been a doctor.
      (You don't make big money until you pay all of your debts and have had many years of experience)

    I'm so glad about your community college comment. I'm always embarrassed that I go to a cc because my brother graduated from UCLA, but a cc really was the best option for me because my brothers and I are going to school at the same time as me so it really helps financially coming from a low income family.

    I've been an Emergency Medical Responder for my fire department for 4 years. And realized I was fascinated with anatomy. Obviously I also love helping people so I knew I wanted to become a doctor. But I thought coming from a broke family college was unrealistic... So anyway I recently applied to college and got accepted so I'm going to get my bachelors and then I obviously want to go to medical school. I guess for some people it might not make sense but I know it's what I really want to do so I'm going all in...

    simple math:
    The average college graduate of a none medical field (Engineering, Accounting, Computing Science, Etc) on average make around 100k a year, taking into account the entry level salaries and top earners. After a career of 40 years (Starting at age 23) and retiring at 65; leave a net accumulation of 4.2 million before taxes.
    A physician that starts a practice at age 33; as a fully trained specialist will make no less than 400k on average a year. After 30 years of practice that is 12 million before taxes. almost 3 times that of a normal college graduate. Even if you want to throw in the debt of 500k in tuition and training cost; it is still 11.5 million, which is far above the average college graduate.
    the short: medicine pays, and there is far more job security not only within your own country but globally as long as you know the language of the country you want to move to. For North American and European graduates.

    • @arielrom1178
      @arielrom1178 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      T Deo you forgot about neurologist, cardiologist, urologist. And the top if not the best speciality is dermatology; a none surgical speciality which has one if the top 3 salaries. In average well about 500k

    • @arielrom1178
      @arielrom1178 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      T Deo and how is this data independently verified, is there a third party.
      I live in Canada and the structure of earnings is different than the US. Physicians in Canada have a cap/ service fee.
      In a short note all earnings are paid by the government.
      Below is the governmental college of physicians states per speciality. There isn't a possibility of over reporting salaries as it would serve no benefit.
      With all of that being said; it would be logical that American physicians have higher salaries than there Canadian counterparts. For two simple reasons no service cap and larger population.
      www.cma.ca/En/Pages/specialty-profiles.aspx

    • @arielrom1178
      @arielrom1178 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      T Deo yes there are some in other professional fields that make 200k plus, but it isn't the norm. As for medical professional making over 200k is very much the norm.
      No you can't take any of it with you but the question in the video was addressing the reality of monetary gain or lose in choosing a medical career over something else. At the end of a 30 year career a doctor will alway have made more than his counter part in any other profession on average.
      Excluding the rarity of sports professional and some in software development, high finance and CEO; which are very rare opportunities with little to no access for 99% of people.
      In the end it will always pay more and be more of a guarantee to be a doctor; Especially if monetary gain was the goal. Also doctors have more job security not only nationally, but globally opposed to other professions. As long as humans have bodies there will alway be a need for a doctor lol

    You're awesome man. The saddest part about this is that it shouldn't be this way to begin with. People pursuing further education, especially in the medical field where we need all we can get, shouldn't be financially punished for it. We can add $700 billion to our already overpowered defense budget, no questions asked. But suggesting that we actually invest in education is pie-in-the-sky thinking. I know it's not that black and white, but our priorities as a country *clearly* aren't in order and nobody in the news ever talks about it.

      Damn you could potentially have that paid off in three years. The only downside is you also lose a lot of earning time. An engineer for instance will most likely have already been working for 6 years, earning about 500k not including potential compounding returns. Another three years youre now debt free, the engineer has earned another 500k. Engineer now has somewhere in the range of 500k to 1 mil liquid cash working for them, so close to retirement. While your just paying back your debts. I choose early retirement hahaha

    • @oijoijiuhiuhi8654
      @oijoijiuhiuhi8654 7 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @KurtleTheTurtle The average mid career salary of an engineer is around 90K. No offense but a nurse with a bachelors could easily pick up some extra shifts and pull in close to 150k a year. Also you're argument really depends upon your speciality. If you specialize in general internal med and only make 180k a year than it's a dumb decisions, but if you choose something like surgery like neuro, ortho or cardio, you're making 500K+ a year. I'm not drawn mostly by the salary, it's a wonderful compensation, but I really love the field of medicine and I've always dreamed of being a physician.

    Live within your means is great advice, regardless of what career or business you're in. If you borrow $300,000 at, let's say 6%, over 20 years you would have paid almost $450,000 over that time if you include all the interest. On top of that student loan stays with you as it is very hard to get out of in bankruptcy. It's a substantial investment. Bottom line is that you have to love doing what you'll be doing before taking on that amount of debt.

      Well, let's be real here it all really just depends on the individual. The average med school students come out with 200k-300k in debt, not 500k. You could come out with much more like this guy, or come out with none. However, the average falls around 200k-300k. That sort of thing is quite manageable with the salary of most specialized physicians and especially surgeons. If you pay off your debt ASAP instead of trying to pay it off over the span of 20-30yrs then you'll be golden. If you wait that long you'll end up having to pay over double your loan back. Interest is a bitch. Imo the issue with becoming an MD is the painfully long amount of time it takes. Most other higher paying career paths will have had years, maybe even a decade in the work force on you and all of that time to invest and earn money. Meanwhile, you'll have to pay off massive student debt to even begin earning anything which would make your absurdly high base salary negligible. Even if you get that debt out of the way early, it'll still take a while to catch up to them assuming both parties are wisely investing their money. However, once you do catch up as an MD your net worth will just continue to rise exponentially. In reality it all just comes down to what you personally would prefer, and as the saying goes, you shouldn't be going into medicine for the money, because there isn't really much to be made there.

    I’m really worried about choosing between medicine and technology. Mostly because of the debt. Yes, the salaries are higher on average for physicians, and private practice pay can be even higher. But you can also make a fortune by working at MAANG and other tech companies. Then there’s malpractice insurance. I have a few years left as an undergrad student….Both routes are attractive and tough.

    Depends on how old you are. If your a middle aged adult who's changing careers and going back to school for a new bachelors degree, medical school may be out the window. If your a recent high school graduate that's 17 yrs old, than med school is definately an option. Most college students nowadays are working class middle aged adults in their late 20s and early thirties looking for new or different careers. In my computer science class, there are way more middle aged adults in college than there are new high school graduates.

    People tend to forget that once you start earning the big bucks when you're a surgeon/doctor, you can still invest and try to focus on some side projects/businesses as well. It all comes down to how well you can manage your money and time. :) In other words, you can still live out your passion as a surgeon & make bank while doing it! You just gotta put the effort and thought into it!

  • @Angelito_Noreaga

    The money isn't the question. Is 500K of student debt worth it? If you make as much as an orthopedic surgeon, 489K/year, then of course it is. You could pay off all of the debt in 2 1/2 years and still be keeping 189K per year. Easy math. The real question is is it worth the lifestyle that a surgeon lives? Say goodbye to your free time, you'll be looking at charts all day from home.

    • @antoniowebbmd
      @antoniowebbmd  6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Good points. Yes, you def have to consider what specialty you are entering because if you have 500k of student debt and go into Pediatrics making 100k a year, than that may not be a good investment. Also, if. you are going into medicine just to make a salary of 500k/year, then you are going into it for the wrong reasons. Thanks for watching and your comments!

    So glad I don't live in America. Medical degree in Australia $20,000. So much wrong with America: education too expensive, health insurance too expensive, crap minimum wage, low salaries, poor annual leave entitlements, poor government assistance. Little wonder why our university has so many American professors moving here. From what I have seen physicians don't have a life. I have met so many that wished they had chosen a career that allowed them to spend time with their kids and live life to the fullest not work your guts out.

    I think it is important to note that going to cc is not always the cheapest option. If you are in the top of your high school your college may cover almost all of your tuition. Elmira College in New York will give you 20k per year if you have a 4.0 in high school. If you go to a small public university, you may have cheap tuition and get scholarships. If you go to a CC and transfer, the vast majority of your scholarship options go away. Remember, a school may have a large price tag but that is never the price you pay. Another example, if you go to a Christian high school, go to a Christian university. You will probably get scholarship money. Apply for scholarships everywhere. Delaware used to have a book called the Delaware State Scholarship Compendium, which had all the scholarships for students there. The problem with CC is that they are hit and miss. I had instructors that had associates degrees teaching general biology. If you want a consistent education without worrying about transferring and whether or not your credits will transfer, go to a 4 year school. Don't take tuition for face value. Look at institutional merit-based scholarships. Private schools offer way more than public. Grand Canyon University is a school that will help a ton. Work a job on campus and get paid to sit at the gym and study. A 4 year education spent entirely at a 4 year school is affordable without loans if you are a good high school student. Check out schools in North Dakota. Minot State University, Dickinson State, Mayville State University of North Dakota, and NDSU are all very affordable, even for out of state students. Minot is a public school with no out of state tuition. It costs 8k per year. Bemidji State is in Minnesota and is the same way. Know your options. Do your research. Don't let money be an object if you want something. Find the best value, but don't sacrifice by risking going to a CC.

    I'm upset now.. I made the decision to go to a 4 year university instead of starting at community college because I did not want to make it harder on me in the med school application process and my dream school apparently does not accept CC credits.. The school itself and the CC i was going to go to advised me not to go the the community college (CC). It was the most stressful decision I've had to made.

    Future prospective med students be warned: only go to community college if it’s financially difficult to go to a public or private college; it could hurt ur application if u do otherwise, I.e there’s been a crackdown on grade inflation seen in community college courses in the last few years. Med applications (primary and secondary) will often ask ,specifically, if you attended any community colleges and why. As a current med student that navigated the application process, I couldn’t go by without making this point.

    Think of it like this: you're making a 200k+ investment (med school alone, ignoring ultimate, massive, interest payments) in yourself you have precious little chance of guaranteed repayment. New med schools are opening every year. Residency spots increase barely with population growth, if even. And the average post residency grad is going to make around 200k before taxes... Ballpark.
    Are you really intelligent, competent and competitive? Want to make money? Go work with money. Stastically speaking, to make really good money as a doctor, build a time machine.

      Thank you, Sir. I'm hoping PA-C will give me the best of both worlds, but seeing M.D.'s as humble as you, taking time to give us hopefuls advice is inspiring, and makes me contemplate taking the plunge!

    Somewhat of a distorted viewpoint since the vast majority of high debt medical students won’t be going into specialties that make anywhere near 600k

    As civilised societies, it boggles my mind that you can enlist in the army, be fed and boarded, and taught skills and knowledge to fight and potentially kill other people, all costs covered by the taxpayer. Yet for people like doctors, nurses and psychologist s etc, we make them pick up the tab for the training and education. Learning to kill is free but learning to save has a cost. That's really sad to me. 😞

    I'm insane so yes and money is not really something I care about. I don't know how to take care of myself,I'm one of those people who will forget to eat when they're caught up on something. I might actually die in medical school if I'm not aware of my habits.

    Investment analogy needs to be changed to "borrowing against your future income." The borrowing analogy underlines the fact that your future income must be great enough so you can afford to borrow against. If future income is not certain to be great for whatever reason... then you shouldn't borrow against it. Simple. Clear. Done. Where as "investment" is usually mystified as "it's bad now but it will magically become good later" view point. Due to all the financial investment marketing, investment analogy is more likely to lead to a faith-based decision ("just do it, cuz everyone says investing is good") than a personalized, money-counting, statistical decision.

    Hey! I’m not in med school but when I chose my nursing program I saw it as an investment, (it’s pretty pricey) one that would pay me over and over. There’s also loan forgiveness programs out there as well.

    completely disagree on the community college sentiment Doc. CC have larger class sizes, it is survival of the fittest to get into the classes you need(ie hunger games), AND a lot of the classes they make you take do not transfer to the institution you are trying to go to-2 years at CC very quickly turns into 3 or 4. PLUS the new play colleges are doing is that you need "in residency" credits so those GE's you completed at CC don't count towards finishing your BA/BS. Keeping it real because i wish someone fed it to me straight years ago.

      False. maybe you went to some really bad cc but most talk with the in-state colleges and have lists of class that would 100% transfer.

    Not worth it for a GP. I’m an internist and the pay is horrible considering the amount I studied. I would only advise med school only if you specialize.
