Someone already mentioned the correct pronunciation earlier, just think of Dorothy's little dog in the Wizard of Oz. Anyhow, rock band Weezer did a cover if Africa this year or last year that did it justice.
Agreed sir i wasn’t born in the 80s but my family showed me these sorts of beautiful music talents of that time and i tell you this is one of a kind ❤️
India if you could go back to the 70s and 80s listening to all the great music like this you would NEVER want to come back! Take it from someone who grew up then.
Ditto on that. I sold stereo systems back then and music was my life. Sad to say for today's youth, but I think musical production and creativity peaked in the late 70s - early 80s.

This is one of the great songs. It is timeless, and always a welcome companion. There are so many great things going on vocally and instrumentally. Toto has many great songs, but this song is their crowning achievement.
I remember visiting Mombassa Kenya in the US navy back in the 1980s and playing this on the jukebox in a patio bar while drinking Elephant Beer, while the afternoon rain stirred up the Red clay soil out front.
I don't know if you understand the backstory to this song. Africa at the time was experiencing some of the worst draughts ever. People were starving by the thousands, and there was little the rest of the world could do to save so many. This song is actually a form of prayer for the entire continent.
Interesting thing about this song I read years ago: they recorded several percussion tracks on top of each other to get the initial rhythm groove you hear at the beginning of the song. They recorded it for several minutes and then went back and found the best 20 seconds or so of the whole groove and then physically cut and looped that together on an old tape machine. (Today it would be done in seconds digitally on a laptop screen.) They did that to get a very consistent percussion track and everything else was recorded over that.
I like your analogy of the song , yes he could be talking about a woman " she's coming in 12:30 flight" . But I also think he was getting the feeling from the people of Africa "stopped an old man along the way"... We should all love Africa that is where we all came from the cradle of humanity. Love the reaction India been watching you for a few months . Keep on rocking !!! Try Roseanna by TOTO

One of my all time favorite songs. Been in love with Africa since the first time I heard it when I was a kid. 1982 I believe. Great band! Check out Georgy porgy, I won’t hold you back, 99 as well. They had quite a few good songs and I listen to them damn near every day.
One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands. This came out my senior year of high school. Thanks for doing this song, hope you enjoyed it. Another good song from the 80's is West End Girls by The Pet Shop Boys. I love the 80's and would love to see you do more from the era. Keep up the good work. BTW. It's pronounced Toe Toe like Dorothy's dog in Wizard of Oz. Peace and love.
Nice reaction girl~! Africa.....what a song, what a continent, what a history. Thumbs up & it's always so good to see people appreciate Toto. One of FINEST gathering of musicians under one tent EVER. Concerning the "meanings" of this epic tune, no one says it better that the guy who penned this masterpiece; as per the Wikipedia on Africa: In 2015, David Paich explained that the song is about a man's love of a continent, Africa, rather than just a personal romance. He based the lyrics off a late night documentary with depictions of African plight and suffering. The viewing experience made a lasting impact on Paich: It both moved and appalled me, and the pictures just wouldn't leave my head. I tried to imagine how I'd feel about it if I was there and what I'd do.
I saw Toto (pronounced "toe-toe," like Dorothy's terrier in "The Wizard of Oz") in concert last November, and they still sound awesome! "Africa" was a No. 1 song in 1983. ... India, do you ever watch NBC's "America's Got Talent"? A huge adult choir did an a capella version of "Africa" last summer. Their snapping/leg slapping sounded like rain and their jumping on the bleachers sounded like thunder. :-) Here's the link to "AGT": th-cam.com/video/f3wwqgoQwfE/w-d-xo.html
Thats part of what reactions about when it comes to a new song...may not know artist but she can appreciate. Can look past mispronouncing and just appreciate what she is doing 🤗🤗🤗
the song is about a missionary in Africa and being lonely a friend is coming to visit. Africans bless and worship the rains that fall. He is on his way to meet them and just notices things around him. Basically a prayer of thanks.
It means Africa to many of us... As you can see we are A mixed Couple 33 yrs together. From South Africa.... We are just now getting some rain next two three days. Blessed rain. But ZERO jungle in Western Cape. 4 million people and Skyscrapers in Cape Town. Type in Stellenbosch, ( 15 miles from C.T.) We love your reactions. Especially the Unchained Melody. This is not only a beautiful song with the instrumentals but the lyrics flow from the heart. Actually I believe that the lyrics are a metaphor. Yes he is singing about his love for Africa. He compares Africa to a woman he has a great love and respect for.
This song brings back so many happy memories of my 18th birthday year and has been a favourite ever since! Another of their hits, 'Roseanna' is great, too.
Great reaction, India! The groups name Toto is the same as the name of Dorothy’s dog from the Wizard of Oz, pronounced like (toe toe). I also have to congratulate you on how you did your reaction. I never saw this done before and I just saw this video for the first time. I tried to explain this very same way to do a reaction to a song or artist last year, to another reactor but, I don’t think that the person understood what I meant. Good job!
One of the catchiest tunes I've ever heard. My take is that the song's lyrics reflect what many people have experienced about Africa - particularly the Seregeti Plains, Kilimanjaro Area. They say it gets to you, that you can't let it go after you return, and always yearn to go back.
My mum bought this on LP when I was one year old. Apparently Africa was my first ever jam. I used to lose my shit over this when I was tiny. Thanks Mum!
These guys were-are highly sought out session players. They also were backup players for very famous musicians. Steve Lukather (the guitarist), currently plays in Ringo’s All Starr Band. But he’s a super star in his own right.
Toto's Jeff Porcaro, was one of the greatest drummers of all time. He was easily one of the most recorded session drummers of the 70's, 80's, and early 90's. He's done session for artists Michael Jackson, Ray Charles, Madonna, Dolly Parton, the Four Tops, and Etta James just to name a few.
Really love your reactions. You have NO IDEA how great it was growing up with a buffet, a cornucopia of songs. Heaven!! Uh, just a heads up - the band's name is pronounced toetoe, not tootoo.
I know a family who have done several missions to Kenya and Ethiopia and they love Africa. They had four small children who were basically growing up there. I've never been but I definitely want to go someday.
This song clings to my consciousness, not because the lyrics make any sense, but because the music and voice perfectly captures the emotion of yearning. The song yearns, and it makes me yearn for some unknown thing too.
The 70s and 80s were the best decades for music. I wish I could relive my teenage years in the 80s. It's pronounced Tōtō with a long O sound, like the dog in the Wizard of Oz.
Ok please if you ever read the comments. You say "like or not." We love the song, was out dance song !! Everytime We heard it no matter where...We danced...still do. We are SOUTH Africans. many people consider this song to be one of the greatest musically contracted songs ever recorded. there is a video of a radio/podcast deconstructing this song and other things on the net. you can take each instrumental track and listen to it individually and still hear the whole song in your head. its really cool, I recommended going to search for it.
The band members that became Toto were originally the studio band for Boz Skaggs on 1976 album Silk Degrees. If you want to hear "Toto" rock out, listen to Lowdown by Boz Skaggs, and Lido, both from 1976 release Silk Degrees.
Good analysis. I've always felt it could be referring to the love for a woman or the love for the land, I lean towards the land. I've been to a couple unspoiled parts of Africa and it is beautiful.
at the time that this song was released Africa was struggling as a country... another song about the support for Africa during the same time was the song We Are The World by Michael Jackson... I suggest watching the original video, there were so many legends that sang together
This is one of those songs in which I never really tried to decipher the lyrics or its meaning. I find that I enjoy this melody more and more with time, and I loved it the first time I heard it. I'm envious of you hearing it for the first time. Please keep it up Sweetie. You might try "My Hometown" by Bruce Springsteen at some point. I'd like you to experience that. Thank you!
It's pronounced toe-toe. The song-writer saw a documentary on a drought in Africa, and when he was in school some of his teachers had worked there as missionaries. So, you got it mostly right with your interpretation and understanding. :)
The person singing lead in this song is David Paich he's the keyboardist for the band. Here's a fun fact, Toto we're extremely involved in the making of the Thriller album from Michael Jackson. In fact Steve Porcaro recorded a song intended to be a Toto song on the b side of a tape that David Paich made for Quincy Jones. The song is Human Nature. Quincy sent over to David for some song ideas and he sent a tape that Steve recorded on the b side of. The song got discovered because the tape deck that Quincy was using had a auto reverse function and it flipped the tape and started the other side when it ended the side a. Otherwise he might have missed the song completely.
it is pronounced toe toe. Like the little dog in Wizard of OZ. Toto. I used to work with them in LA . They were the absolute top studio musicians, known as session players because they made their fortune playing on the recording sessions of most of the hit records of the 60s and 70s. and 80s.
After almost 40 years of lking this song, I still have no Idea what it is really about. I never really cared anyway. I just enjoy the sound of a heavy but warm african rainfall. 5 years later they did Mushanga, it has that same african vibe to it.
It's Toto, after Dorothy's little dog in the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy was from Kansas, and Toto started as a tribute band playing mostly Kansas music. (Check out Kansas, if you haven't.) They did have a few nice hits of their own, though. The name sounds like a toe on your foot, two times - Toto.
Toto is pronounced like "toe toe". LOL! This is my favorite band. I just saw them on Oct. 10th. They have been performing around the world to sold out concerts for over 40 years and sadly, this was their last week performing; they are now on hiatus. This song Africa is the most requested, the most popular, the most played song in the world. You really need to get the video of this one to get the full effect. :-)

@Pixie Dust So he Saved, HER. With a life saving prick?
This song is not about being religiously "saved," dude. *rolls eyes"
You are spot on...this is about a guy fighting his heart between the woman he loves and his love for Africa...
From my understanding it was his imagination of Africa he had never been there..
I believe Africa is his girl, metaphorically speaking
Nah, it’s about Lycanthropy. A Man and his struggle with his werewolf form, and how he found salvation in African folk magic.

it is pronounced toe toe.
Please do Mr blue sky by ELO, you'll tap your feet and be smiling all day,
Such a feel good song! I think it got an upswing again since it was in Guardians of the Galaxy, and it really deserves it. :)
Great band
Love you India!!! God bless 🙏
He's been in Africa for some time and she's finally flying to go see him. the quiet conversation she hears in on the plane.
Its the love of Africa, She, Her is Africa.
This is one of the best songs in the history of mankind. You should have reacted to the video.
You look very pretty in this reaction..☺
Toto is pronounced like "toe toe". LOL! This is my favorite band. I just saw them on Oct. 10th. They have been performing around the world to sold out concerts for over 40 years and sadly, this was their last week performing; they are now on hiatus. This song Africa is the most requested, the most popular, the most played song in the world. You really need to get the video of this one to get the full effect. :-)
And their song Rosanna is about the actress Rosanna Arquette...she was dating the keyboard player at the time....
TOTO also co-wrote and played on "Michael Jackson" song "Human Nature".
Rains? Blessed
Drums? Echoing
Hotel? Trivago
Why did this cause uncontrollable laughter for me? Maybe I need sleep
May I suggest some John Mellencamp music from 80’s
“Hurt So Good”
“Jack & Diane”
“Little Pink Houses”
From 2019 “Grandview”

It's one of those songs that you enjoy without taking the lyrics too seriously.
