I love all these vids, and the tools they've given me. But what I rarely see any instructor talk about is the necessary use of the riders core and how imperative it is to influence our horse. Thank You
Another very helpful video. A clear demonstration of the balance between too much stiffness that locks joints versus positive muscle tension that continues to allow joint movement. The example of a proper kick that doesn't take the knee away from the saddle was another opportunity to be reminded of the need to fine tune aids. 👍
So I was initially taught to kick quickly if they don’t listen (as shown in video)and then I had an instructor who told me not to kick but to use my initial leg aid and then if they don’t listen squeeze my heel into their side which I think is that “squish” she was talking about, is one better to use for forward versus lateral motion or should it always be a kick?
Once your horse becomes more responsive, you can use a gentle squeeze. But the important thing to remember is to keep your leg from gripping if the aid isn't working (because gripping definetly won't work!). then you have to go back to get the reactivity with quick little kicks
I am 'too nice' when it comes to kicking- my lesson horse also needs a crop, and I HATE using it to do more than tap her... My instructor just keeps screaming "hit her harder, really smack her" and I know I need to do it, but it hurts my soul, haha. Rebecca barely feels it, and she will respond when I do it right- as a result I am afraid I am relying on the crop, because leg aids are diffIcult ( they FEEL impossible, but I know that isn't true, I didn't think I could post and steer, until I did, haha. Progress is a beautiful thing when it actually happens!) for me in the rising trot. How do I effectively kick AND maintain the post?
but what happens to my upper leg and knee ( and my seat bones ) that moment I take my lower leg away to get a rude clap ( from far away ...smile...horses feel a fly ) ??....at 6.33. she says this horse is too sensitive for demonstration.....and that performed clap at 6.49 doesnt convince the horse ( and me ), horse seems not sensitive that moment ...ask why ? ....if one observes attentively which leg of that horse starts moving by this performed clap ?...which legs of horses we want quicker and why ?...... questions who are answered themselves for a thinking rider with eye open

If necessary, you kick the horse in the posting trot when your seat momentarily touches the saddle. Always on the downward movement.
Thank you this will hel p me. I got the 'Ahaa' =)
