Incredible, after so many years of discussing this nonsense piece of solo and having watched many tutorials where people just mention the part as "just making noise" SOMEONE finally accepted the challenge
It's these nuances, (that people wrongly mistake for sloppiness), that make Jimmy Page stand out from the crowd of pentatonic rock soloists. It's heartening to know that guitarists far better than me struggle to decipher exactly what he is playing - I've been trying to figure out Dazed and Confused (TSRTS) since 1977!!!
Jimmy has actually said that he purposely buried that beginning part so people would actually have to listen really close to hear what he was doing...cheeky bastard!!! 🤣🤣🤣
You’re right, that open G was probably an accident, but it sounds like it belongs there. Incidental contact with open strings happens a lot in his solos. That’s why I like his sloppiness, it adds so much character to his playing.
Hmm...I have old tab from a reliable magazine that I knew wasn't right. Tried that for years. Thanks for doing this. BTW to those commenting about Page's "sloppiness" - I just learned all the parts to Tangerine, which features nice acoustic, electric, and slide guitars - was he sloppy there? Or in The Rover? Or Bron-Yr-Aur? Or all of Physical Graffitti, etc.? He wrote and produced so many songs that are classics. Wish I was as sloppy as him.
fishyfishy tangerine is pretty simple to be honest. So why should he be sloppy on a solo that last about 20 seconds? Also page was an incredible acoustic guitarist. Nobody gives him credit for that, but the signs are there. He’s never made a noticeable mistake while playing acoustic. I don’t know how, but that’s how it is.
Yep, because therein lies the magic. That solo is all about slightly controlled abandon, which is why it makes your heart soar. A perfect rendering would be bloodless, technical, and not remotely interesting.
clintostwald I have read that Page would record 2 or 3 solos for some songs and go with the best one. I read on Wikipedia (taken with a grain of salt) that the basis of the song was spontaneous. It didn’t mention the solo. Either way, a great song.
Maybe this is just him changing things up during live performances, but during in the film, The Song Remains The Same, you can see Jimmy starting the solo by playing the middle section of A Minor Pattern 5 pentatonic. He is playing something on in the 2nd Fret G, 5th Fret G and 2nd Fret B and 5th Fret B. I guess that can give you a clue to how it starts

This is really good...lots of great details! One minor improvement, because I am totally "that guy on the internet": for the opening section on the low E and A strings, I think Jimmy's really playing 16th note hammer/pull triplet trills starting with the open A string instead of C on the third fret. So instead of: C-A-G C-A-F# etc... it would be: A-C-A-G "A-C-A-F#. etc... It matches the trills he does later on in the solo, Bonzo's "diddlaboomp diddlaboomp" drum solo at the very end, and is generally just more "Page-y". It also sounds like a very drunk Johnny Strabler kick starting his Triumph in 'The Wild One'. Anyway, even if you hear it differently, it's a cool party trick. LOL
Yes! This is excellent. I love learning stuff that's hard to hear and challenging for the ear but completely playable. The last few years for me has been the studio version of AC/DCs Riff Raff but this is next on my list. Well done sir!

I sped your half speed performance up on TH-cam to 1.5x speed and it sounds pretty close! Jimmy Page was way better than everyone thinks that he is and he knew exactly what he was doing without question. You just have to understand that he was playing his Telecaster through a Sola-Sound Tone Bender Fuzz which makes his tracking hard to hear and that the loud Rhythm Guitar Track was covering up a lot of the Solo’s detail. But in the beginning part you are definitely in the right spots evidenced by the second solo lick in Whole Lotta Love where he uses these same open pull-offs in a very similar fashion.
👍🏻..a lot of people should appreciate this...and I do the same thing.. I can spend an hour or more dissecting 1 measure on a loop ...and then the worst part..That loop will repeat in my head over and over all day or more..(like a stuck Cd)...

I started 4 years ago at the tender age of 45 3 hours a day on guitar rather than the TV and I'm evolving every day so much fun I can't wait to get home after work and play. What I love about guitar is Everytime you pick it up something else comes out it's really inspiring give it a go ✌🏽
This is a great solo! I've played it a couple of times live but ended up fully improvising the whole thing as it's probably improvised in the studio and Jimmy himself don't know what he played. I usually improvise my own solos too. Well partly at least. I might have some idea where to go but all the details are improvised. But it seems he does the same. Jimmy is probably laughing: Oh, I played it like that? Damn! When I get a good take (on demos), I listen what I played and try to make sense of it like you're doing here. Then I make some adjustments to make it easier to remember and play live or in studio if I have to.

Jimmy said many times , he doesn’t remember how he played it from night to night on stage , not just this solo but most of them , except the ones that need to be the same . Live from the song remains the same movie. I just starting playing I remember when he steps up and starts the opening lick , his fingers looked like a spider The way he hits the notes. Like his fingers are on hinges, awesome visual.

Jimmy plays it different every time. Page improvised a ton because Zeppelin toured alone and so page had to drag the length of the songs out. So he just went out and played and made stuff up a lot. He still played the song but it was never played the same twice
I just have quick suggestion, I think it would be better if you play the part of the solo first, start to finish (maybe with the backing track) that way we have the big picture of what you are explaining.

It's because Jimmy did that amazing ' scratchy' sound that makes it so exciting yet disheartening because the notes are so indistinct. Slightly like SIBLY.
The only way to play this solo perfectly is to invent a time machine, go back to the actual recording and become Jimmy Page for 30 seconds. In other words, what makes this solo what it is, is him just being himself in that moment and letting it rip. Guarantee he never played it exactly the same ever again.
Four years later: it's evident to me that this is a solo that Page takes artistic license on. Sloppy? Inconsistent? Right on point is what it is...every time he plays it. Note for note copy purists will never understand that.

My parents went to a lot of Zep shows back in the 70s, my mom would joke that jimmy couldn't have played on the recordings because, he doesn't know what the f/ck he's doing. That's all she ever said about the performances.

The guitarist who wrote and played that lick or song almost NEVER EVER plays it EXACTLY the same way twice much less Exactly the same way as they did when it was recorded. Hell most of them can't even remember how they Exactly played the day after it was recorded yet someone on TH-cam has finally figured it out....LOL. Honestly if you get the main parts (above 90%) right NO ONE is really going to notice or care for that matter if you miss or mess up a 5 second section of the solo. No matter how hard any of us try this includes TH-cam teachers NONE of us are going to be Page, Eddie, Jimi, Glimour or play Exactly like them. There's no doubt that Mike here has talent ( more than I'll ever have ) along with others, but if as much time and effort trying to copy someone was applied to creating their own stuff it might be the Their music that someone on TH-cam is figure out. Gotta admit it is entertaining to watch. 😁
I hear this all the time and I understand what you’re saying. I grew up playing many things wrong and continuing to play it wrong didn’t make me more creative or better in anyway. It wasn’t until I dug deeper into the magic of my favorite guitarists/guitar parts that I found something more in music that I am now able to apply to everything I play today.

It's just I had a teacher years ago that told me basically what I posted because I was trying to get some songs down note for note and he told me I was just wasting time because I'll never get it just right and I'd be much better off doing my own thing. Something that I like doing and really helped me out is to take someone's solo,lick or riff that I like and change it up some to make it my own, I'm sure you've done it to you'll be listening to a lick or solo and think what if I added this to it or play it in a different key. Anyhoo wasn't trying to be too much of an ass or belittling, thanks for your videos!!
I find that, often, those that expound the "Play it your own way" philosophy, simply don't have the discipline or patience to study a part, particularly if the part requires learning a technique or pattern they aren't already familiar with.....because that's what this is right? A study of the guitar, and a forensic dive into a particular part can ONLY be beneficial to a guitar player looking to master the instrument right? As for "I was just wasting time because I'll never get it just right and I'd be much better off doing my own thing", tell that to a working studio musician or a band guitarist for a TV Show. You can bet that Page was learning Blues licks note for note, as an emerging guitarist.
Highlights that some stuff is not worth figuring out note-for-note, or if the endeavor even makes sense. When someone plays sloppily, there’s a big difference between what they “mean” to play, and what the actually DO PLAY. I see no value whatsoever in trying to capture slapdash spontaneity, other than for a lark. It totally misses the point.

It's just I had a teacher years ago that told me basically what I posted because I was trying to get some songs down note for note and he told me I was just wasting time because I'll never get it just right and I'd be much better off doing my own thing. Something that I like doing and really helped me out is to take someone's solo,lick or riff that I like and change it up some to make it my own, I'm sure you've done it to you'll be listening to a lick or solo and think what if I added this to it or play it in a different key. Anyhoo wasn't trying to be too much of an ass or belittling, thanks for your videos!!
I find that, often, those that expound the "Play it your own way" philosophy, simply don't have the discipline or patience to study a part, particularly if the part requires learning a technique or pattern they aren't already familiar with.....because that's what this is right? A study of the guitar, and a forensic dive into a particular part can ONLY be beneficial to a guitar player looking to master the instrument right? As for "I was just wasting time because I'll never get it just right and I'd be much better off doing my own thing", tell that to a working studio musician or a band guitarist for a TV Show. You can bet that Page was learning Blues licks note for note, as an emerging guitarist.

Highlights that some stuff is not worth figuring out note-for-note, or if the endeavor even makes sense. When someone plays sloppily, there’s a big difference between what they “mean” to play, and what the actually DO PLAY. I see no value whatsoever in trying to capture slapdash spontaneity, other than for a lark. It totally misses the point.
