- Is there a better definition of Drum Corps than the Madison Scouts? This performance is from the June 8th, 1996 Flag Day performance at Calder Field in Menasha Wisconsin. No matter what time of the season, the Scouts bring it to the field and bring it good. Thank you guys for being a source of goose bumps!
That was our first performance that year. I remember that night well - I called retreat block and I had to teach the horn line how to do retreat in the couple of minutes between the end of our show and the beginning of retreat because we hadn't had time to cover it during rehearsal. I also got to play the Never Walk solo during the victory concert. You're very welcome for the goosebumps, thank YOU for the cheers! :-)
So true. And the weird thing is that drum corps in general is an engaging and fun experience for people that don't even follow drum corps, as we all very well learned with "BLAST!". So, what does Blast have that DCI doesn't seem to these days? I'll tell you... single, recognizable, coherent tunes that start and end. Everything else is EXACTLY the same for all intents. Sadly we are progressing the ART of drum corps, but not the ACTIVITY of drum corps
@Andophonic I miss the 90's too- and these were G bugles! So much more powerful than Bb trumpets- and we called them bugles back then. We didn't have "tuba's" and "trumpets," it was "contra's and sops." But times change, I suppose. I march DCA now, and we have G bugles.
Ultimately this is why DCI has lost its fan base as well. They sell far fewer tickets and the activity is shrinking, even with more media exposure through the internet. Artsy doesn't put butts in the seats. The average DCI fan doesn't understand 95% of the shows played today. Us experience folks do, but we aren't the majority.
Screamers. Madison always had soprano players who could peel paint with the high notes.
Thank you for posting this walk down memory lane. - Bass #2
And you’re welcome for the goosebumps.
Andro, I feel ya. To hear Carolina Crown's "Fanfare For the Common Man" is to experience the beauty of sublime combined with power. HOWEVER, what puts butts in the stands is the crazy loud moments and screaming soloists. It's always been my contention that part of the reason corp has shrunk from thousands of groups to dozens is that we've pushed too far into the realm of artistry and forgotten about peeling faces back. Yes, even at the cost of tone.
ohhhhh man..This is the reason I love music so damn much!!!!
Just hearing they're intro " THEEE MMMMADDISON SCOUTS!!" ...gives me goose bumps everytime!
I wish the scouts would be beastly like this in ALL there future shows...
Whats really sad is back in the Madison hay day they were better on June 8th (first week of the season) than they are today. I really hope Madison gets back on the wheel here and pumps out some of the great shows like they did in the 90s.
wow what an old comment. 2010 was that for me.
Menasha, WI - the Americanos Home show!I was there! WOOHOO!
My first DCI Show /Corps i have see
8 quads....... 8.....
You can really tell this is early season, still loud as balls tho
I love drum corps. Gives me a range goal on my trumpet. It's like Maynard Fergsuon in a marching unifoorm...
my trumpet teacher marched in this!!!!
I graduated from High School on this day.
@tylerjoe15 .... This didn't win a title. Screamin' lines and loud ensemble won DCI in the 70's and 80's.
dude one of my highschool band directors played in that his name is justin frazier
Not as good as finals but they still kick serious booty.
John Schipper ROCKS! Gotta listen to 3:30-3:45 a couple times at least... :0)
@tylerjoe15 I miss the 90's, but not that particular aspects of the 90's. I like balance and tone quality too much to just play loud for the sake of playing loud. Not that loud is bad. I like playing loud, but its best kept for the big moments.
I can't believe they placed 5th at DCI that year...
Raul Garcia Sixth, actually...
They just don't make fun corps stuff anymore like Madison did in the early to mid 90's. No matter what the judges said, the crowd always wanted the green to win the gold.
@lhprop1 The Cavaliers?? :P
