I actually haven't tried it as a personal item. I think it's just a bit too big unfortunately. So if I took it on a flight I would use it as a carry on only. I think you could squish it and make sure it's not too full and it would be fine for a personal item. I use it for weekend trips that we drive to and I love it for that. I know they came out with a smaller weekend bag that would probably work for personal item use. I hope that helps!
