You might be interested to know that 11 years after you made this video, I had to buy a used VHS to DVD player to replace an old one that was stolen from me when I moved. I long ago forgot how to transfer videos and was stuck for two days with a unit I believed was malfunctioning. But your clear instructions pointed out one step I overlooked and I am now happily transferring videos. Thank you for your helpful video.

OMG Anthony, I cannot thank you enough for making this video... I just bought a. new old stock(2015) Emerson ZV427EM5 DVD Recorder/VHS Recorder combo which looks exactly like the unit you have bit I know several companies just use a basic body and button kit so several brands can look identical. Now this is probably my 3rd unit like this, my previous one suddenly crapped out and the circuit board just froze and stayed confused blinking open without opening the DVD door anymore. It was another new old stock unit I'd bought from ebay 10 years ago!!! Which today is all you can really expect from a consumer grade unit anyway... if I get 8 to 10 years from this one, I'll be happy but I could not for the life of me figure out how to get the damn thing to just record a tape to a blank DVD well this is the first such combo I've bought that has a RECORD button AND a D.DUBBING button so when you said to press that to record, it worked instantly!!
Thanks so much again Anthony...duh!! It should've been easy for me at this point but I guess sometimes you're gonna get a device that can confuse the hell out of you no matter how many electronics you have and have had over the years! 🙄😉😊👍🏼💯

My dad passed in 2016 and I have been slowly gathering the equipment to convert our old VHS tapes to DVDs to save them forever. I am in the final stages of "finalizing" the tapes. I could NOT figure out how to do it with a universal remote, but i've ordered the exact model remote and will do the set up button to finalize them. I can't thank you enough Mr. Wheeler! I am in tears typing this comment. I am forever thankful and grateful to find your video! I hope you are doing well and would love to hear and update as I see this is from 12 years ago! Wow!!!

What a nice man he is. He's obviously very intuitive in this excellent kind of tech. I bet he's one of the very few people these days that still has tremendous respect for VHS tapes, and he's not alone on that one. Even though he will copy his VHS tapes to DVD, he will never do away with his tapes because he's someone that's still willing to observe that tape will always be the original format for what is now being produced today. If it wasn't for tape, we wouldn't have what we have today.

Anthony. I have taken back to Walmart two VHS to DVD Sanyo recorders because they did not work. I had even called customer service for help. They told me to take it back. I went online and saw that Toshiba 620 was recommended. So I went to Best Buy and purchased it. However, after hours of trying and throwing away multiple disks that did not record, I finally went on TH-cam and saw your video. OMG... the directions in both Sanyo and Toshiba manuals have told me to select DVD and push the record mode... THEN go on to select VCR and select "play" THEN push the dubbing button. Your video tells me not to push record mode on DVD but to begin the VHS tape and push Dubbing button. AFTER HOURS AND HOURS (I am persistent) of following the directions from those manuals, I did what you said and IT IS WORKING!!!!!!! Both the SANYO and TOSHIBA companies need to edit the directions and hire you as a consult!!!!

+Margi Jacobsen, Thank you for the very kind comment. It sounds like you have gone to a lot of trouble. I'm happy to hear that you got your VHS to DVD transfers working. I don't know how different or similar various models are but I used a MAGNAVOX DVD RECORDER / VCR ZV427MG9 on my TH-cam video. I bought it some time past, I don't know if it is still being made and sold.

Hi there this must have been a error made on behalf of Sanyo or Toshiba, if newer/later models have inaccurate instructions, then whoever has written the manual has done a poor job, and not done his/her homework and not followed the rules on how to write/produce a instruction manual that is easy to follow and not a headache to learn from. To produce a manual it has to be easy to follow and instructions easy and simple to follow, Sanyo/Toshiba do not have proof readers that will read or see if the products they market is easy to use, as all they care about is money.. Sanyo/Toshiba do not test each product they manufacture it's down to the consumer/End User to see how the product works, Not Sanyo/Toshiba, though it's their responsibility which they regret is not the fault of theres, in which fact it is...

I should have come here first. You made this so much more easier to understand than the instructions included; however, I must admit that I am more of a visual person! My dad, who passed away 8 years ago, had transferred our family movies from film to VHS ages ago. My brother lives in California - moved there for a job - and has no family out there :( I wanted to transfer our VHS recordings to DVD and mail them to him in time for Christmas. I gave up last night after 3 failed attempts, and woke up early this morning to attempt the process again after I found your video. It worked perfectly! I was able to ship the DVD via FedEx this morning and he should receive it on Christmas Eve! Thanks!!

Ella, thank you for your comments. I started video recording my young family back in the early eighties. Many of my three son's early childhood, school activities, and sports were recorded to VHS video tape. I had well over one hundred tapes. After my children were grown no one seemed to have any interest in seeing those old video's. I transferred them to DVD's. And no I did not keep the old tapes, if for no other reason than the space it took to store them plus all of the DVD's I made.

Now I can transfer all of my most memorable vhs movies to dvd which will save a ton of space and make traveling with my movies much easier. These are hard to find older horror movies like Peter Cushing, Vincent Price, Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee and more, which I recorded onto vhs over the years as they played on cable tv. And I already own this type recorder. I cannot thank you enough and I have saved this video to my favorites.

Thank you Mr. Wheeler. I just purchased this item from HSN 3 days ago, and was about to send it back because they never mentioned that you must finalize the disc before you can use it in your PC. I actually recorded the same VHS disc twice thinking maybe I did something wrong. I then tried it on every electronic item in my home that would operate a DVD and nothing, however it did work in the recorder but that's it. Now that I have seen your video I decided to pop the disc back into the recorder and follow your steps and it worked!!! Actually, because I didn't finalize the disc the first time before taking it out of the recorder the steps were:
    1. Setup
    2. DVD Menu
    3 Finalize

Thank you so much for this video!! I watched this the day I ordered my machine and I was ready to go when it arrived! I read over the manual also, but it was so easy to understand because I had this information prior to it arriving. I feel like I would have messed things up without this information. I especially benefited from the part where you advise to fast forward through the video to see what the length is. I was able to use the highest quality write speed upon finding out that the videos I was recording were each less than an hour. Again, thank you so much for this very informational video!

Rick, I didn't see a pause option on this matter, but when you stop the vhs tape for fast forwarding or for another tape, the dubbing stops. When you're ready for the next segment, press dubbing and so on. This also creates another chapter each time you do this.

you can finalize it years later.....as long as the recorder functions it will still finalize .....if it no longer works the disc can still be finalized on an identical model dvd recorder

    • @robertgaines-tulsa
      @robertgaines-tulsa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

If the DVD is just write once and there is no space left to record or you are sure you will no longer add anything to the remaining space, it is good practice just to go ahead and finalize it. I takes just a few minutes. My recorder has an option to unfinalize, but I've never tried it. I often go ahead and rip my DVD recording to a compressed video file on my computer for convenience so I generally immediately finalize the disc. I don't recommend finalizing a DVD during a thunderstorm or recording one for that matter as the power can fluctuate resulting in a disc that can only be used as a drink coaster. My recorder is the same model shown in the video. I have found it to be pretty dependable. If you get an error saying that your video tape is copy protected, you aren't out of luck, but you will require a video stabilizer and another VCR to play the tape from. Video stabilizers are legal for your own, private purposes as stated under Fair Use law. They are for the most part only available online through places like Amazon and eBay.

Molly Hopton , Molly I downloaded video software to my computer called Wondershare Video Converter. This software can copy my DVD's to computer and I can convert these files to video format for the internet. I am sure there is other stuff out there but that is what I have used.

Anthony Wheeler Thanks so much! I've just copied two VHS. I have about six more to go. My videos are only about 2-6 minutes long. My next question is, can they be finalized without a remote? I don't have the remote since I bought this unit second hand. Do you offer a finalization service? I would be happy to pay you if that's a service you offer. Thanks for your quick reply earlier! :)

    • @dahdigital1

Molly Hopton , There is no menu button on the combo recorder so you can't access the menu to finalize your DVD's. I suggest going on ebay to find a remote. The DVD's must be finalized on the unite they are recorded with.
