  • Generations of old home movies, 35mm slides, VHS video tape, mini DV tapes and more were produced from the 1950's thru the year 2000.
    Before this is all lost or discarded it should be transferred to the digital media. I am producing a series of TH-cam video's to show how this is can be done.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you Mr. Wheeler!! I purchased a DVDirect recorder years ago and seldom used it. Your video reminded me to find it! Recently, my sister brought me a box full of old VHS tapes full of family memories. Our dad passed away in 2004 and we can't wait to get these on to DVD's to watch them and reminisce about our time with him! Hugs to you, my friend!

    Glad to see you using a 4-head Hifi as your playback machine. When transferring VHS, it's important to have the best possible playback device. Personally I use a JVC S-VHS deck, even for standard VHS tapes. The VRD-MC5 looks much more portable than any of the outboard DVD Records in my setup with the built in LCD screen. You mentioned that the VRD-MC5 has no audio, but does it have a headphone jack or line output so audio can be monitored? Aside from composite, what other inputs does the VRD-MC5 offer? I have Digital 8 and MiniDV with Firewire, as well as S-VHS with S-Video. Does this unit disable recording when dubbing commercial VHS tapes encoded with Macrovision?

    • @dahdigital1
      @dahdigital1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ThriftyAV, The VRD-MC5 has no head phone jack, no line output. Other inputs include s-video, firewire, and USB. I only us the VRD-MC5 to transfer home video, there is nothing on commercial VHS tapes that I could think of that I would ever want to copy.

    • @ThriftyAV
      @ThriftyAV 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dahdigital1 Thank you for your prompt response. The inability to monitor audio is a disappointment, but it is nice that S-Video and Firewire are included. I occasionally back up commercial VHS recordings when they lack re-release on DVD or other modern formats. But most VHS tapes that fit this criteria do not have Macrovision, as this was implemented by major studios and video distributors. All five of my DVD recorders prevent recording when Macrovision is detected, so it is likely that this Sony would too.

    • @mylovesongs2429
      @mylovesongs2429 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! JVC S-VHS with TBC (Time Base Corrector) is the best VCR to use, as the TBC magically improves the tape content. I am gonna buy one of these from ebay, AND soon I will go to ebay and buy a decent JVC S-VHS VCR with TBC. I have dozens of old VHS tapes to copy over. As for recording Hollywood movies from VHS to DVD, you would need to buy a device that disables the Macrovision. There is one on ebay called the RXII Video Stabilizer, which disables the Macrovision on VHS movies.

    With a T120 VHS tape, what quality should you use on a 120 minute DVD? Does it matter? I would like to get the whole VHS on one DVD, but it seems to say FULL DISK before the whole VHS tape gets copied.

      Tony Arellano, I started with one of the earliest consumer video cameras 1982 and moved up over the years as newer camcorders came out. I ended up with so many Video tapes I was just glad to get them all finally transferred to DVD. Besides, all of that was standard definition. So for me quality didn't come into play until Hi Defention digital recording. It worked for me and helped me get all my transfer jobs done.

    Anthony, I started my project of converting family movies on VHS-C to Dvd. I did the first tape which was 30 minutes as a test and all went well. I finalized the DVD and watched it to make sure it recorded and it was a success. On my next DVD, I did 2 tapes and then during the third one it told me the DVD was full. I did the finalizing process and the machine says finalizing for an hour and a half. Is that normal? I think I will go to bed and see if it finalizes. I did not do the tapes at one sitting and turned off the DVDirect for a few days before I returned to my project. Do you think that affected the machine. Maybe I need to complete and finish a DVD in one sitting. I have been recording and stopping the DVDirect so I can edit the tapes when transferring. I would appreciate any tips or insight into my process. Thank you.

      Anthony Wheeler thanks for your response. I finally found a solution on another forum. If the Sony recorder isn’t showing the VHS video in its “viewer” it’s not recording it- and the solution that resolved my issue was to press the on-off button for the Sony converter continually for 30 seconds! This remedied it! I’ve converted several VHS tapes to DVD since, then use Handbrake to convert them to mpg format so I can share them via TH-cam. One has to look far and wide to find answers for older technology! I have had this tool for years, never used it bc of this glitch and only NOW found the solution because Covid gave me time and incentive to do the research. That is at least one silver lining from this very strange time:) Your demo was very helpful in confirming I had set it up properly- so thanks!

    I just got one of these and I just can’t figure out why my DVDs don’t have any sound

      Kinzi Loyd, If it records picture and no sound I would suspect faulty wires connecting audio.

    i tried this after buying one. the results were NOT good. I couldn't even watch it. I wonder what types of software would help improve things, or even a piece of hardware.

      suggest, go back and test everything. test the combo recorder will it play back other dvd's that you know do work. and so just test and double check.

      The multi function dvd burner in my TH-cam video is no longer sold, that I know of. I have seen another brand multi function dvd burner on the TV channels that sell product. Not recently however, it was a long time ago.
