Something like The Secret World of Arrietty might be a candidate for your list. Alternatively the documentary Kingdom of Dreams and Madness is an excellent glimpse of what it’s like to live and work with Miyazaki. I definitely am interested in Ghibli but haven’t seen them all. I think you definitely nailed the “essential 3”. Contrasted with others like Porco Rosso and The Wind Rises - they were high quality and special but not really thematically the kinds of stories that pull my heartstrings (I don’t rewatch them as frequently)
My recommendation, which literally no one reacts to, is Naussica of the valley of the wind. It is my favorite Miyazaki movie. It’s also on the “adult oriented” vibe more than most Miyazaki movies, similar to this.

Relationship-wise Kaya was engaged to him and would've become his wife if he hadn't been banished.

It's funny that they thought American audiences wouldn't sit through a 2 hour movie, not knowing people will sit through 3 hour and even 4 hour movies if they enjoy it. I know it wasn't popular back then to be that long, but still funny to see.
I think the thing that makes this a more mature movie, beyond the violence and gore, is the fact that the characters and their motives are so complicated. Every character, even the ones that seem like “villains“ are understandable. You can empathize with them. There is no black-and-white good or bad. At first Lady Eboshi and Irontown seem like the bad guys, but they’re not really, because in nature, in natural law, everything deserves the right to do what they need to to survive. It’s the circle of life. Everything kills some thing to live. And that’s not wrong, even though it’s sad and sometimes horrifying. It’s more about the circle of life, and the complexity of everyone trying to fight to survive - not “humans bad, humans destroy everything“.
This is my favourite Ghibli film, followed by Nausicaä and Pompoko, but basically every single Ghibli movie is worth watching! Also, thumbs up for choosing subs over dubs!
Miyazaki's films are all amazing, and this is one of his best. I'm really hoping the TH-cam gestapo doesn't take this down. From what I've heard, Studio Ghibli films tend to trigger copyright blocks pretty quickly. 😒
By far one of my favorite movie soundtracks ever. The music never fails to bring tears to my eyes,since I first heard it when it came out (I was 18 yrs old) The English dub is pretty good,I hope you get the chance to watch it that way as well
The Forrest Spirit follows a classic "God of life and God of death" duality seen in a wide range of nature based religions. You don't often see this archetype in film and Miyazaki does it so well.
This was an epic movie. The music and cinematography are top of the line. I think the end must have been difficult to write. There isn't really an end to the conflict, but Miyazaki just couldn't end it without some sort of positive resolution. Who wants to leave the theatre in a bad mood? In some ways, I think this was a retelling of his film and manga, Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind. In real life we don't get an easy answer and you can feel Miyazaki's struggle with this reality while trying to make a successful film.
I'm almost sad you've seen Spirited Away (many times) as that's my absolute favorite Ghibli film and I'd love to see a reaction to it. Of course, they are *all* amazing. Castle in the Sky/Laputa is my next favorite and Porko Rosso is my 'dark horse' favorite. I love it, but not everyone does. Again, they are all amazing.
This is an astouding movie to see on the big screen, if you can. Fathom usually does a semi-annual Studio Ghibli revival fest in theaters in the U.S.; Mononoke is almost always on the bill.
I completely adore this movie. It is my favorite Miyazaki/Ghibli movie for sure. I was fortunate enough to actually see it in a movie theater back when they first brought it to the US. It was amazing. This movie is surprisingly violent and dark compared to most Miyazaki movies, but it has an absolutely beautiful message. Humanity and nature should not be at odds, we are all part of nature, we are all interconnected, and we all depend on each other to survive and prosper. And no matter how many times I watch this movie, it never fails to bring me to tears. I am sobbing uncontrollably during several scenes, guaranteed. If I could recommend another Studio Ghibli movie to you, I would say "The Castle of Cagliostro". It's an early film for them, from 1979, and I feel it is often overlooked. But it's still brilliant, like all of their films. It's just a fun heist caper, set in an ancient castle full of mysteries. It's definitely worth checking out. Also, if you're in the mood for some more Japanese cinema with a theme of humanity and nature in conflict, I HIGHLY recommend "Shin Godzilla" from 2016. Even if you're not into Godzilla movies or you think they're corny or whatever, this one is different. It's the most recent Japanese-made Godzilla film, and it's very serious in tone. It's definitely layered with different kinds of commentary and satire of the Japanese government and society. And Godzilla is actually scary in the movie. Just to give you an idea of how good it is, it basically swept the Japanese equivalent of the Oscars and won all of the awards. I think it could make for a great reaction for your channel, and it's a movie I think people ought to know about!
If you like this kind of beautiful, sumptious anime, I highly recommend "Millennium Actress". It's gorgeous, a story that spans the entire 20th century. :)
I am usually a sub person, but I do watch this in English usually. It is very well done and the English script had to be approved by Miyazaki I believe.
You can actually thank Disney for those Dubs. The team behind PIXAR studios is the one that produced the Studio Ghibli dubs and provided the marvelously talented casts.
From a bilingual, ji-blee is the correct pronunciation for the studio name! Please react to Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind if you like this one! That was Miyazaki's first film and, in my opinion, one of his best:) Speaking of painstaking detail, there is a documentary showing the behind the scenes of the production of this film. It may still be on NHK World. Inone part it shows Miyazaki scratching his head and redrawing and redrawing the scene where Ashitaka emerges from the cave after his injuries, and loses his balance as he jumps down to the ground. When asked what was bothering him, Miyazaki replied that he couldn't get the fall right - if he fell too smoothly it would show too strong a weakness in Ashitaka's character - he had to have just enough resistance in his fall to show that Ashitaka had character of strength, despite his weakened state. How cool is that.
My most favourite movie of all time happens to be a Studio Ghibli movie called "Castle in the Sky". So, if you feel like watching this and others from that company I certainly wouldn't mind. However in the past it happened rather often that reaction videos to their movies got copyright strikes. So, being a bit careful with these movies may be a good idea. Though I do not know how it is nowadays. The last time I have seen someone react to these movies has been quite a while ago.
The piano song at the end that you liked is done by Joe Hisaishi,a frequent collaborator w Ghibli. My personal fav piece of music from him(besides The Legend of Ashitaka here) is Madness from Porco Rosso.

My favorite film of all time based on what it achieves with the stories/themes/characters…and with animation. I saw the English dub in a movie theater long ago, before I began to prefer subtitles. But some English dubs will always stick with me, like original Cowboy Bebop, Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl’s. Minnie Driver, Billy Crudup, Keith David, Billy Bob Thornton, Gillian Anderson as Morrow the wolf god, Claire Danes, etc. An alt title for this movie is Legend of Ashitaka (and the song of the same name, like you said many times, is also amazing)
Kaya is not a little sister of Ashitaka, she is his betrothed. I suppose she only called him brother because of them being close from childhood. Ashitaka was a prince of this tribe and Kaya was his betrothed, which means Kaya is also a high-born girl in that small community. I bet they are raised close and really fond of each other. Kaya is a fierce girl who draw a sword to protect her friend and face that scary demon-god with no hesitation. Ashitaka saw Kaya drew a sword, so he braced himself to sacrifice his life for her. He knew the curse would be upon him. She has a only few screen time, but she is loved by fans in Japan.
This is my favorite Studio Ghibli movie overall, but my favorite comfort films from Studio Ghibli are Kiki's Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro and The Cat Returns. Those are a lot more easily digestible in a way, but just so beautifully done. They just make you feel good, but still have some stakes in them. And of course the animation is top notch in all of them. I also wanna recommend When Marnie Was There (real tear jerker) and The Wind Rises. Those are more dramatic and will definitely get you in the feels.

Ironic - the credits have just rolled when I picked up my phone! Don't be surprised if you get a copyright strike as Ghibli fiercely guard their films. Also, Joe Hisaishi's music for the Ghibli films is some of the greatest out there. I put him in the same category as Williams, Zimmer, Shore and Goldsmith. You can instantly tell his work.
Studio Ghibli is amazing, would love to see you watch anything you haven't seen yet! The last film with Miyazaki's involvement _The Wind Rises_ is a beautiful movie that virtually made me forget it was animated partway through, and opened my mind even wider to just how much was possible with animation, and what excellent stories can be told with the medium.
Porco Rosso is one that doesn't get a lot of attention, but it's fun and still has some good "chills" moments - think WWII ish era, air pirates in the Adriatic Sea.
I've known Mononoke and Spirited Away for many years and, for me, they both rank among not only among the best Animated Movies but also among the greatest Movies ever, period. A few months ago, I checked out all other Ghibli-Films Netflix had in its catalogue (except Earwig and the Witch as the 3D-Animation just felt wrong combined with Ghiblis overall style) but I found all others worth checking out to some degree or other, especially Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, Only Yesterday, Porco Rosso and the Wind Rises. The Cat Returns was kind of a hidden Gem I was pleasantly surprised by. Hayao Miyazaki originally intended for The Wind Rises (2013) to be his final film before retirement but he reconsidered and started working on another one a few years ago: How Do You Live? will be released on Japan this July.

I forgot that the big wolf is male in the English subbed version. In the English dubbed version it's female. And btw, if you're ever interested, the English dubbed version is superbly voiced.

I say go for it on Ghibli films. More anime in general is always welcome! I could recommend too many lol. Mary and The Witch's Flower is a good one from some Ghibli artists who broke off from Ghibli and started their own studio.
Cant go wrong with Miyazaki, his kid did one i like called Tales from Earthsea with Willem DeFoe and Timothy Dalton. If you plan on doing more anime, here is my top few. Ninja Scroll, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Battle Angel, Galaxy Express 999, and the Transformers anime from the 80s is awesome.

I know you are more of a tv/film reactor. However, if you have a PS4 or a PC with Steam, you should play the JRPG Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Remastered. It kind of has a Pokémon vibes, but it has a great story. It was a collab with Level 5 and Studio Ghibli. It's like playing in a cartoon world. There's no way you have time to play a long game since you are maybe jn your 2 or 3rd year of college. But if you have a free summer and can play a game, it would be a great choice.
I wouldn't watch Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind - the manga it's based on is *amazing* but virtually all of the complex, dense story got ditched for the film. The same with Akira (obviously a very different film etc), which has an incredibly dense, complex manga base, and chucks almost all of it away for the film (so much so, even Lady Miyako - of comparable plot importance to Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones, is reduced to being seen once in a brief shot). Mononoke is great, however, and captures the complexities of character - good people can do bad things, and bad people can do good things.
While I absolutely encourage you to watch all of Miyazaki's films, because the man is incapable of making a bad or even mediocre film! I would suggest keeping Ghibli films either exclusive to Patreon or posting the youtube version on another site with a brief link video, for your youtube subscribers. At least that is what some other reactors have done with music or movie reactions that keep getting flagged or striked. And yes, the English dubbed versions are incredibly well done, featuring all star casts, including Patrick Stewart in Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, so even if you just record reactions to the subbed version, it's worth watching the English as well on your own! You could even add that to part of your ranking system if you do a Ghibli or Miyazaki film ranking video, like you did for Star Trek.
It's still the odd Ghibli out, since Miyazaki was trying for a change of pace with bloody downbeat tragedy--But unfortunately, due to contractual agreement, it ended up being the first one to play US theaters, and gave everybody the wrong idea. Despite the fact that "Kiki's Delivery Service" had already been a huge breakout hit on direct video, and parents who came to Mononoke expecting another Kiki were in for a shock... 😮
Great review! Yes please watch more Ghibli movies. My Top 3 Movies are: 1. Laputa - The Castle in the Sky 2. Porco Rosso 3. Kiki's Delivery Service. If you watch them you must do it with Subtitles because the english dub sucks!!! ;-) Also be very carful because they could block you! They even shut down the TH-camr Channel VKunia so she had to open a new Channel.... Now she has a separate Anime Channel so that they dont close her main Channel again... best would be if you would make a deal with the right-holders so that you are on the save side.
Yeah, Films by Miyazaki rarely feature an outright Villian as he reportedly hates black-and-white morality. That’s why his films mostly have oddly likeable *Antagonists* who often have good reasons for what they are doing and have learnt good lessons themselves by the time the movie comes to a close. The only one of Miyazakis‘ films to have an absolutely irredeemable Badguy is _Castle in the Sky._
I just wish it was in English instead of this subtitles stuff, but I do know this movie I like it a lot and it shares a lot of my beliefs in such as the Gods of the forest and many other types as well.

I never watch with subtitles because I want to Watch the movie, not read it. I like many people have poor reading comprehension, so subtitles Suck! If you're looking for other fantastic Japanese animated movies then I highly recommend, in my personal order of preference, Ghost in the Shell(1995), Akira(1988), and Ninja Scroll(1993). All three are English-voiced incredibly well, and the music in Ghost in the Shell is utterly fantastic. If you're ever looking for an amazing Japanese animated series, then I highly suggest Cowboy Bebop(1998-1999). There are 26 episodes and one movie, the English-voiced version is par excellence, and the music is beyond reproach.
Ninja Scroll?? 🤨😆 Back in the 90s birth-of-anime, we OG fans used to joke about "Scroll-Heads", who heard the Asia-fear stories on the news about "sex and violence" in the first imported anime toons, made a beeline to Blockbuster to find what usually the only one anime title they had, and would then pester our social media for "More films like Ninja Scroll...And not that Pokemon crap, either!" If you hear Shell, Akira or Scroll still recommended in the 21st cty., it's usually because the recommendations have been passed down for thirty years from father to son...

It's definitely layered with different kinds of commentary and satire of the Japanese government and society. And Godzilla is actually scary in the movie. Just to give you an idea of how good it is, it basically swept the Japanese equivalent of the Oscars and won all of the awards. I think it could make for a great reaction for your channel, and it's a movie I think people ought to know about!

I am usually a sub person, but I do watch this in English usually. It is very well done and the English script had to be approved by Miyazaki I believe.
You can actually thank Disney for those Dubs. The team behind PIXAR studios is the one that produced the Studio Ghibli dubs and provided the marvelously talented casts.

Speaking of painstaking detail, there is a documentary showing the behind the scenes of the production of this film. It may still be on NHK World. Inone part it shows Miyazaki scratching his head and redrawing and redrawing the scene where Ashitaka emerges from the cave after his injuries, and loses his balance as he jumps down to the ground. When asked what was bothering him, Miyazaki replied that he couldn't get the fall right - if he fell too smoothly it would show too strong a weakness in Ashitaka's character - he had to have just enough resistance in his fall to show that Ashitaka had character of strength, despite his weakened state. How cool is that.
My most favourite movie of all time happens to be a Studio Ghibli movie called "Castle in the Sky".
So, if you feel like watching this and others from that company I certainly wouldn't mind.
However in the past it happened rather often that reaction videos to their movies got copyright strikes. So, being a bit careful with these movies may be a good idea.
Though I do not know how it is nowadays. The last time I have seen someone react to these movies has been quite a while ago.

So glad you were able to see this and appreciate the astounding artistry, resonant across the board. My favorite film of all time based on what it achieves with the stories/themes/characters…and with animation. I saw the English dub in a movie theater long ago, before I began to prefer subtitles. But some English dubs will always stick with me, like original Cowboy Bebop, Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl’s. Minnie Driver, Billy Crudup, Keith David, Billy Bob Thornton, Gillian Anderson as Morrow the wolf god, Claire Danes, etc. An alt title for this movie is Legend of Ashitaka (and the song of the same name, like you said many times, is also amazing)
Kaya is not a little sister of Ashitaka, she is his betrothed.
I suppose she only called him brother because of them being close from childhood.
Ashitaka was a prince of this tribe and Kaya was his betrothed, which means Kaya is also a high-born girl in that small community.
I bet they are raised close and really fond of each other.
Kaya is a fierce girl who draw a sword to protect her friend and face that scary demon-god with no hesitation.
Ashitaka saw Kaya drew a sword, so he braced himself to sacrifice his life for her. He knew the curse would be upon him.
She has a only few screen time, but she is loved by fans in Japan.

This is my favorite Studio Ghibli movie overall, but my favorite comfort films from Studio Ghibli are Kiki's Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro and The Cat Returns. Those are a lot more easily digestible in a way, but just so beautifully done. They just make you feel good, but still have some stakes in them. And of course the animation is top notch in all of them.
I also wanna recommend When Marnie Was There (real tear jerker) and The Wind Rises. Those are more dramatic and will definitely get you in the feels.

Also, Joe Hisaishi's music for the Ghibli films is some of the greatest out there. I put him in the same category as Williams, Zimmer, Shore and Goldsmith. You can instantly tell his work.

Studio Ghibli is amazing, would love to see you watch anything you haven't seen yet! The last film with Miyazaki's involvement _The Wind Rises_ is a beautiful movie that virtually made me forget it was animated partway through, and opened my mind even wider to just how much was possible with animation, and what excellent stories can be told with the medium.
I've only ever watched this in English and I forgot that they changed Moro to a woman's voice in the dub!
Porco Rosso is one that doesn't get a lot of attention, but it's fun and still has some good "chills" moments - think WWII ish era, air pirates in the Adriatic Sea.
I've known Mononoke and Spirited Away for many years and, for me, they both rank among not only among the best Animated Movies but also among the greatest Movies ever, period.
A few months ago, I checked out all other Ghibli-Films Netflix had in its catalogue (except Earwig and the Witch as the 3D-Animation just felt wrong combined with Ghiblis overall style) but I found all others worth checking out to some degree or other, especially Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, Only Yesterday, Porco Rosso and the Wind Rises. The Cat Returns was kind of a hidden Gem I was pleasantly surprised by.
Hayao Miyazaki originally intended for The Wind Rises (2013) to be his final film before retirement but he reconsidered and started working on another one a few years ago: How Do You Live? will be released on Japan this July.

I say go for it on Ghibli films. More anime in general is always welcome! I could recommend too many lol. Mary and The Witch's Flower is a good one from some Ghibli artists who broke off from Ghibli and started their own studio.

Cant go wrong with Miyazaki, his kid did one i like called Tales from Earthsea with Willem DeFoe and Timothy Dalton. If you plan on doing more anime, here is my top few. Ninja Scroll, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Battle Angel, Galaxy Express 999, and the Transformers anime from the 80s is awesome.

I know you are more of a tv/film reactor. However, if you have a PS4 or a PC with Steam, you should play the JRPG Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Remastered. It kind of has a Pokémon vibes, but it has a great story. It was a collab with Level 5 and Studio Ghibli. It's like playing in a cartoon world.
There's no way you have time to play a long game since you are maybe jn your 2 or 3rd year of college. But if you have a free summer and can play a game, it would be a great choice.
It's written like jiburi, but it's an Italian word and it was supposed to be written giburi but there was a mistake in translation so either is OK.
I wouldn't watch Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind - the manga it's based on is *amazing* but virtually all of the complex, dense story got ditched for the film. The same with Akira (obviously a very different film etc), which has an incredibly dense, complex manga base, and chucks almost all of it away for the film (so much so, even Lady Miyako - of comparable plot importance to Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones, is reduced to being seen once in a brief shot). Mononoke is great, however, and captures the complexities of character - good people can do bad things, and bad people can do good things.

While I absolutely encourage you to watch all of Miyazaki's films, because the man is incapable of making a bad or even mediocre film! I would suggest keeping Ghibli films either exclusive to Patreon or posting the youtube version on another site with a brief link video, for your youtube subscribers. At least that is what some other reactors have done with music or movie reactions that keep getting flagged or striked. And yes, the English dubbed versions are incredibly well done, featuring all star casts, including Patrick Stewart in Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, so even if you just record reactions to the subbed version, it's worth watching the English as well on your own! You could even add that to part of your ranking system if you do a Ghibli or Miyazaki film ranking video, like you did for Star Trek.
It's still the odd Ghibli out, since Miyazaki was trying for a change of pace with bloody downbeat tragedy--But unfortunately, due to contractual agreement, it ended up being the first one to play US theaters, and gave everybody the wrong idea.
Despite the fact that "Kiki's Delivery Service" had already been a huge breakout hit on direct video, and parents who came to Mononoke expecting another Kiki were in for a shock... 😮
Great review! Yes please watch more Ghibli movies. My Top 3 Movies are: 1. Laputa - The Castle in the Sky 2. Porco Rosso 3. Kiki's Delivery Service. If you watch them you must do it with Subtitles because the english dub sucks!!! ;-) Also be very carful because they could block you! They even shut down the TH-camr Channel VKunia so she had to open a new Channel.... Now she has a separate Anime Channel so that they dont close her main Channel again... best would be if you would make a deal with the right-holders so that you are on the save side.
Yeah, Films by Miyazaki rarely feature an outright Villian as he reportedly hates black-and-white morality. That’s why his films mostly have oddly likeable *Antagonists* who often have good reasons for what they are doing and have learnt good lessons themselves by the time the movie comes to a close.
The only one of Miyazakis‘ films to have an absolutely irredeemable Badguy is _Castle in the Sky._

I just wish it was in English instead of this subtitles stuff, but I do know this movie I like it a lot and it shares a lot of my beliefs in such as the Gods of the forest and many other types as well.

If you're looking for other fantastic Japanese animated movies then I highly recommend, in my personal order of preference, Ghost in the Shell(1995), Akira(1988), and Ninja Scroll(1993). All three are English-voiced incredibly well, and the music in Ghost in the Shell is utterly fantastic.
If you're ever looking for an amazing Japanese animated series, then I highly suggest Cowboy Bebop(1998-1999). There are 26 episodes and one movie, the English-voiced version is par excellence, and the music is beyond reproach.
Ninja Scroll?? 🤨😆 Back in the 90s birth-of-anime, we OG fans used to joke about "Scroll-Heads", who heard the Asia-fear stories on the news about "sex and violence" in the first imported anime toons, made a beeline to Blockbuster to find what usually the only one anime title they had, and would then pester our social media for "More films like Ninja Scroll...And not that Pokemon crap, either!"
If you hear Shell, Akira or Scroll still recommended in the 21st cty., it's usually because the recommendations have been passed down for thirty years from father to son...
