I’m a leftist who’s broadly supportive of high immigration, and at present I’m a renter finishing out a PhD with the crumbs left over from my stipend. There are two broad kinds of immigration: people helping us, and people we’re helping. People helping us are economically useful by definition. Maybe they’re propping up British universities by paying five times the fees I paid, or picking fruit, packing meat, building houses or doing heart surgery. Training our own people to do things is great, but there are jobs it is very hard to cover with our native population, either because the job sucks, other countries are better at instilling the skills those jobs need, our ability to train people lacks capacity, or taking highly skilled workers from other places is an opportunity we’d be dumb not to take. Most immigration falls into this category. I do also think it’s good to help people, and that we could stand to do more there. This is a tiny fraction of our immigration system though, because the vast majority of immigrants are capable of some kind of work we need doing.

Anyone else find it strange how popular opinion on immigration seems to be degenerating in the same way in so many countries, particularly when you understand how unrealistic it is. Immigrants get jobs, pay taxes and live their life as any human would when given opportunity for a better life. The strain on social services and the stealing of jobs and all that are exaggerations to make people blame their problems on "the foreigners". You're missing the cultural aspect. Most western nations are small (with declining populations) and have very specific cultures, language, food, art, lifestyle, laws, ethics, traditions, fashions that need protecting as the crucial parts of humanity. There are literally billions (increasing rapidly) of Africans and Asians with fairly monolithic cultures that the world already has a lot of. Not sure why you would want to swamp these precious complex micro-cultures with fairly unsophisticated generic ones that have their own inherent problems ranging from treatment of women, corruption, violence crime, education etc. This is why I and many others don't want any more immigration into the west from the developing world, nothing to do with economics. I would pay more to see less people that don't aesthetical create a holistic cultural experience and damage the harmony of society.
@@jonathanbowen3640 You are forgetting that european cultures are a result of population migrations over the centuries and that is what creates and maintains the cultures we have (Celts, Romans, Vikings, Spaniards, Moors, Italians, Visigoths, Portuguese, and all these immigrants or occupiers had also been places populations had migrated to or invaded. If you talk about destruction or negative impact on european cultures, I would say the US does far more damage than any group of immigrants because the US's eradication of european cultures is insidious and unseen, and has done so much damage. it erases a culture's originality and replaces it with a focus on money and lack of care for one's fellow humans.

Do I see correctly ? From a Canadian perspective the world as we know it will irreparable change to the worse. We may be on the doorstep of the darkest period known by mankind, which will be enhanced by a collapsing environment with catastrophic natural disasters, by a total breakdown of trade relationships and civil interactions. Accepted borders and sovereignty of free nations will be permanently altered, and the law of the jungle will replace international laws and justice. War and tensions will replace peaceful negotiations without the benefit of having a powerful player opting for civility and ethical values. In a nutshell, chaos, tyranny, uncertainty and unimaginable suffering will be the new normal. Good bye civilization, we did get what we wished (and voted) for. Socrates was right after all, democracy is the worst system to govern nations in a logical and meaningful way !
It is purposefully dishonest to merely say, ‘these families include American citizens’. They have arrived illegally on American soil and had children in America (the children, therefore, getting automatic right to citizenship).
Hi everyone, few people set out deliberately to be dishonest. But when children born in the U.S. are automatically citizens, isn’t it worth asking how just-or honest-it really is to question whether their families include U.S. citizens?
@@Tybourne1991 there are many ‘journalists’ who are really propagandists. I am less optimistic about the intentions of those who omit salient details. It is coercive ignorance.
This guest is dishonest (or ignorant). Tariffs on Chinese imports will impact MANUFACTURED goods - not food, as the US imports no food from China. It’s food and fuel inflation which is crippling US consumers and US businesses.
He's threatening Canada with large tariffs too, along with Mexico. Canada provides a huge proportion of US oil and gas as the US cannot produce enough to satisfy demand. Tariffs will increase those costs leading to higher oil and gas prices which will feed into higher transport costs. US food distribution companies aren't going to absorb those costs, they will pass them onto consumers. The US isn't self sufficient in food production either, importing a lot from Mexico to meet demand. Tariffs on Mexican imports will put those prices up costing US consumers more and increasing grocery bills. Even cars built in the US use parts produced in Canada, Mexico, China and Europe so slapping tariffs on those will increase costs for US automakers. So IF he goes through with all of that you'll have more expensive cars, more expensive food, more expensive gas prices and more expensive consumer goods like TVs.

Title was a misnomer. As much about Europe as US😅

The male guest is far more reasonable and A political. The woman is a partisan on Trump. Bu her assessment on Canada is right on the money.
The underlying assumption here is Trump, an honest politician, will do what he said.
Really?. He promised to lower your grocery bills yet he's backtracked on that one before he even gets into power. He said he would be a peacemaker yet he's threatening to use force to get hold of Greenland and the Panama canal.
@@kevinh96 you missed my sarcasm.
@@scokim I didn't miss your sarcasm, but it's difficult to use in isolated sentences in short comments. Perhaps a couple of extra words would make it clearer? "The underlying assumption here is that Trump is an honest politician, so will do what he said".
Analysis based only on 2 countries in EU?
Yur expert man plays golf so he must be right!
Deportation will be cruel indeed. Trump is a heartless man

EU = Germany. No hope there.
Dreading January 20😢
How do you know Trump won't freeze prices... especially if he declares a state of emergency.
He’s a capitalist beholden to wealthy corporate donor interest. He will not freeze prices anymore than he would wear a patterned tie.
In many cases he can't control like that. Same as in UK we can't freeze rents etc.
Relax yourself, elector palatine. Your economy is especially vulnerable.
“Insurrection” lol
It's sad this video only talks about problems and issues rather than opportunities. Yes they will be plenty of challenges but there are also opportunities to do things better.
Why has the left become so depressive?
One word for 2025. Disaster.
I agree with you.
Project 2025
Your guests aren’t even economical experts
In what circumstances can Trump go for a third term?
Let your hair down, I'll still respect you
*we need to notice that eventually the world population would decrease if no action is taken to boost the fertility rate’s!
The cope from New Statesman is laughable.

It is purposefully dishonest to merely say, ‘these families include American citizens’. They have arrived illegally on American soil and had children in America (the children, therefore, getting automatic right to citizenship).
It is, however, factually correct.
The TDS is ramping up again.
Hi@@iknowyourerightbut4986 , thanks for replying. I'm curious, how are you defining 'propagandists', please?
Tariffs did not hit the US last time. Quite the opposite
