  • In this video 'Class D Amp meets SMPS - the TPA3255 300W x 2 meets 600 Watt SMPS', I'll showw the noise from the SMPS and how it shows matched with the Class D 300Watt x 2 Power Amplifier. The Class D amplifier is powered by the Texas Instruments TPA3255 Power Amplifier. This is a video to see if the Switch Mode Power Supply is acceptable to power an Audio Amplifier. #TPA3255 #ClassDamplifier

It's a two switch forward topology and the small transformer is a gate drive transformer (you can see the traces going to the transistors and the two reset diodes).

Thanks Bogdan for the great feedback! I think you are right of course;) It is so funny because I totally missed the 2 transistor to the right (that make up the 2 switch forward). It was so obvious when I was editing the footage later - I almost reshot that footage:) I think it must have been the angle I was in when taking it apart and filming. I need to stop the camera and take a closer look before I go on identifying things while recording.

ya, we expect to something like 65dB PSRR on chip Class D amp. Really interested to see the noise performance of the SMPS using dynamic load and how we measure it. Also, how it affect the output performance of the Class D amp.

Thanks for the feedback. I think you are talking about the time when the power supply is on and you can hear the fan noise - is that right? It is only on for a short time, but I can try to reduce that next time.

    1:23. Good timing BTW.
I hate to say it but, if you would have gave “Specifics” abut the state of the world, this platform would have throttled this a little more than usual.
I say that to say this. 👍 “watching you share your knowledge, is a stress reliever for me, at times like this” .

Hello, I plan to buy an ACEIRMC 200W Pure Bass Subwoofer Crossover Second-Order Crossover Frequency Distributor Divider 2 Way Speaker Audio Crossover Filter
to combine it with an Aiyima A3001 TPA3255 sub amplifier that has a frequency filter but together with this it would surely give a spectacular pure bass?

For fun I made a junk box psu for a cheap class D module I had. The most primitive filter worked best. Low value resistor ( 0R33 ? ) and 10 000 uF. Sometimes this will trip the smps current limiter, not this time. Place the filter close to the amp. The results were just what I wanted with much better RF noise. 50 Hz area also. A linear supply not really better. I prefered the smps using ears. More solid in the bass. A scope was used. 80% of the time an idea like this doesn't work, too simple. I suspect the 10 000 uF was just about OK at 65 kHz. The amp is decoupled and uses 240 kHz with no output filter. Out of phase bridge with class D switching in phase. In theory the speaker will not see the 240 kHz. I got rid of the 65kHz.

Dear Eddie, thank you for the review.
Could you please share your oppinion on the possibility of replacing the two 4700 mkF power capacitors with a pair of 10000 mkF ones, while the power supply is a switching type 48V 7A -- will it affect the TPA chip's operability? What will be the overall effect, if any, of such a replacement? Thank you in advance for your oppinion.
I also invite all other people in the know to express their views on this idea.

When you have a regulated power supply - adding huge capacitors can slow the response of the power supply. Adding some poly caps or ceramics in parallel to the large caps might be of better help as these will filter the higher frequency ripple. Hope this helps?

Class D get much better with smaller and more capacitors. Get some 680, 1500, or at least 2200uF caps. TBH, as its not in the main power supply, i dont know why they used so huge capacitance at this point. The direct fet suppling caps are usually much smaller, für most amps maximum 1 680uF cap. I would try to go down in capacitance and then build this one from 2 or 3 smaller caps.
With my "Hifiakademie" i wen so far, that at this point i have 180uF electrolitics and 40uF foil caps. The speed you get is insane. At the main supply (linear one) i added 4 220uF to the 2 10000uF caps and the difference is insane. Smae principles applies für low voltage supply to OPA`s etc. ;-)
Particularly Class D`s come alive when they get "fast" current. ;-)

Being as class D is itself a type of switching PSU, does the powering PSU quality even matter?

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That’s a great question John! First, does the Class D have too much noise, so adding more noise form a SMPS even matter? Or, is the noise from either at a level that can be heard?
