100% agree. I think Betty Heslop’s life of quiet desperation, which ultimately tragically implodes, is one of the darkest dramatic arcs ever filmed. Jeannie Drynan was Oscar worthy with that tragic look she gave at the wedding where she felt invisible.
@@gerardmackay8909 for me, that character's darkest moment was when she realized the jig was up, she started hitting the son with pillows (trying to project blame onto him, but simultaneously maintaining the hierarchy of the husband as her sole reason for living), and then...the ultimate--she went into the kitchen and just like before, stood in front of the microwave while waiting for tea, as if that established pattern (her role) would perhaps make things return to their previous state. that scene was almost unbearable for me. her misguided belief in married life and all that it was supposed to do for her...in that one moment, her character made me feel everything she had ever experienced--all the disappointment, followed by trying to conjure up renewed belief, followed by more disappointment.
@@liz-sy2lj oh yes her final release of all that pent up frustration at her son, when the horrific Bill finally took off, was a perfect visceral meltdown in all its tragic glory, blaming anyone and everyone else for the ghastly Bill’s abandonment of her . I seriously think Jeannie Drynan gave possibly the most unlauded performance in cinema history.
The scene in the middle of the movie where Muriel goes out to the department stores to try wedding dresses after finding out her friend has cancer, and that mellow version of Dancing Queen playing in the background, if you can make it through that scene without crying, then your heart must literally be made of stone
nah g your made of stone if you can get through scene when she's at her wedding and her mum is waiting be acknowledged and she doesn't see her and her mums face drops and ends up gets to much and takes her own life.. that shit fkn hurts even thinking about it hits
Rewatching it now and I so agree with the interviewer, almost in tears at the cruelty shown to poor Mureal, the loss of her mum is absolutely gut wrenching 😢
I just watched Muriel’s wedding! I watched when it came out at 21 and now at almost 50 I resonated with Muriel (Mariel) in so many ways. Amazing movie!
I totally get what they’re saying. My teens and twenties - Muriel’s wedding was a feel good fun movie in my mind but now in my forties - I’ve absorbed the themes and what happens and my god - it’s depressing. Marvellous but really sad.
Honestly I had to purchase the movie so I can watch as many times as I need to, because it’s a news for me, to see that life’s are not perfect, that life’s can be terrifying, and sad without having to be, and yet there is the willingness to live regardless and try to be at peace without having to make someone responsible for what was and for what it wasn’t. Dark tell me about it and yet is a joy throughout the movie the can’t be explain. Forever my favorite feel good movie of all times
I really saw myself in Muriel's struggle for belonging to a place. It's one of my favorite movies and even nowadays, I still recommend watching it. Long Life Muriel!!!
The first watch is funny after that successive watches the realness seeps through. All of the actors were superb. Never tire of watching Muriel gaining her confidence during the Waterloo routine. 😂
My first time I watched this fabulous Australian movie back in 1996 on British TV while my short stay at RAMADA HEATHROW. Forever in my VERY BEST collection. 🥰🤩😍😍
I remember watching it the first time and many of the scenes made me want to cry because I could identify feeling so uncomfortable are putting on a brave face in a bad situation where there was no winning you were just going to come out looking like a loser and Muriel just kept going and kept pushing and even though you know she did bad things bad things have been done to her but there was no justifying what she did not even felt bad about so many of the scenes in that movie .
Muriel’s Wedding is one of my favorite movie of all time. It is dark, and funny, and so very moving. Toni Colette is an absolute Queen, and you could see it even back then.
When I first saw MW when it came out, I was convinced Collette wasn't acting. I thought it was just her for real and this would be her one and only film because they matched a person so perfectly to the role that Muriel didn't really have to act. LOL It was a huge shock to see in the next few roles.Just goes to show how good Collette really is as an actress.
Well, I've watched it many times and, since for the first, I feel connected and sad. Muriel's Weeding works at the extreme (intense funny and deep sorrow), all at the same time. It's a gem from the indie Aussie cinema and it's a classic, definitely.
Not dark?? The emotional torture and ultimate destruction of Betty Heslop is one of the most heartbreaking dark storylines in the entire history of film. Jeannie Drynan deserved an Oscar for her facial expression alone at the wedding where she felt ignored.
Great actress! I remember she went from 60 to 82 kg in just seven weeks to play the role of Muriel. She would go to restaurants and literally order everything on the menu. She got plump and adorable. Then subsequently she slimmed down to 60 kg again, but it took her six months.
Was wanting to steam the movie but cannot find it in any of the streaming services available in Canada. Wish Netflix would have a film anniversary section where they offered famous films that were celebrating anniversaries.
Saddest darkest comedy ever made. It sure was. I thought most people missed it. MW is so dramatic that it makes you laugh at the misery. An incredible film. Every character is handicapped internally except one! That being Muriel's best friend who becomes handicapped, not because of too much sex.🤣What a great film.
It's because of those dark parts in the movie that the ending is so uplifting. This movie a classic.
i immediately recognized the dark part of this movie...and cried uncontrollably. it was the mother's character that sent me over the edge.

The flip flop scene for me, and then the wedding… it gets me every time. Her mother’s character is so painful to watch.
This film was the first movie I had ever seen from Australia. And I just loved it. Toni Collette was just so wonderful in it.

September, Spring, Ivory.
If your heart was literally made of stone you wouldn't be able to cry because you'd be dead.
My favourite film ever!
👍☺😉😜😝😛😁😌😂😅
But what about The Dawn or Cool Hand Luke or A Man Escaped?

Muriel's mum having enough and burning the lawn, that scene gets me everytime!
brilliant actress so made to look stupid by the husband

Instant classic! Everybody remembers the first time they saw Muriel’s Wedding. Career maker for Tony as well, a great actress.
