Alkalinity and PH goes hand in hand as alkalinity tend to pull the PH higher if alkalinity is high and will pull the PH lower when it is low.
The ideal range for Alkalinity is between 80 ppm and 120 ppm. When your alkalinity is within the ideal range then your PH will hold its place better meaning you will not have to keep adding chemicals to adjust your PH.
If you have a Low Alkalinity /High PH problem the first item you will need to fix is the Alkalinity. You need to set the alkalinity at around 110 ppm to 120 ppm. You will want to start at this level for your alkalinity because as you lower your PH your alkalinity will go down by 10 to 20 ppm which will bring you at around 100 ppm when you are all done with the adjustment.
In my experience, bringing down the PH from 8 to 7.2 will reduce the Alkalinity by about 30 ppm but if I bring down the PH to just 7.4 it will only reduce the alkalinity by 10 ppm so be conservative in lowering the PH once you set the Alkalinity to your ideal range.
If your PH is too high then you can simply begin with a higher Alkalinity.
Every pool is different so make sure that you list your before and after numbers. This will help you greatly next time you need to make another adjustment.
